Fashion Over 40: Daily Mom Style

It’s time again for my weekly Daily Mom Style post where I share what I wore this week and link up with other fabulous fashion bloggers around the web. I don’t know what it is — if it’s the bitter cold outside or the fact that I feel like I’m crippled for life and will be stuck in a medical boot forever, but I’m really struggling with my “Daily Mom Style” these days. Every day it’s such an effort to get dressed and put together something cute. Then when I look back through my photos, I feel like they’re so drab.

It’s Tuesday as I sit here, editing photos and writing this post, and I know I should go get dressed and get a picture, but WHY? I managed to put some makeup on and pull my hair back this morning, but I just pulled on sweats again because, really, who cares? All I did was run to the grocery store and stop into my kids’ school, and my clothes were covered up with a parka anyway.

I used to get dressed and put makeup on every day just because. I never really fell into that mommy yoga pant rut everyone talks about. It’s ironic, I guess, now that I’ve committed to posting my daily outfits on the World Wide Web, I am finally finding myself sinking into that dark hole.

Of course, workout gear can be cute, and there’s a time and a place for it. But when it becomes a copout because I just don’t have the energy to put on pants that snap or button, then it’s time to up the stakes. Maybe I need to join Cyndi in her 31 Days of Winter Outfits challenge! I think that would probably kill me, at this point, lol.

Well, let’s get this show on the road. It’s not exciting, but here’s what I’ve got.

Girls Lunch Out

I wore this outfit to meet some friends for lunch. It was super windy outside so I was stuck with grainy indoor pictures. Boo.

I wanted to wear my moto jacket, and I started pulling pieces out of my closet, trying to come up with a new outfit. I love these tan skinny jeans and I haven’t worn them in a while. I thought at first that two moto-inspired pieces might be too much, but I think they work okay because neither is too extreme. With black and tan, I figured I could use some color so I pulled out this long-sleeved tee in merlot.

I finished the look with my black riding boots and a silver lariat necklace from the new Stella & Dot spring line, and I carried this structured tote. It’s only available anymore in brown. I bought it a few seasons abo.

Cozy Saturday At Home

I ordered this sweater after featuring it in my What To Wear for New Year’s Day post. Why is it that tunic sweaters like this always look adorable on models who are 6’2″ but ridonkulous on ordinary me? I had my daughter take these pictures about three different times to find anything even remotely worth posting. I’ve worn the outfit again, but only because it is so ridiculously comfortable. I wouldn’t wear it out anywhere that I cared who saw me.

Snow Day

I dressed in this outfit to go to church on Sunday, and then our service was cancelled due to the ice storm that caught our region by surprise and sadly took a few lives with it. I was cozy and warm, so I wore this for the rest of the day.

  1. When your not feeling well and it’s the dead cold winter, it’s hard to be motivated to get dressed if you are not leaving the house! I just force myself to do it and always feel better. I love the color combo of the first outfit with the tan jeans, burgundy top and moto jacket! Such a cute and edgy look!

  2. Its the January funk that a lot of us get this time of year. Maybe make a plan and get out and shop for a couple new pieces to finish off this winter? Some really great sales in the stores right now. I love the hot pink sweater, the color looks great on you.

  3. I think everyone is feeling a little blah right now. But we are midway through January so that’s a good thing! I love the brighter colors on you.

  4. Love all the outfits! I too have been in a ‘yoga’ pant rut … Glad I’m not the only one – Thanks for sharing with us 🙂

  5. I still think you look great! and I like your honesty….I’ve been feeling the same way. It’s this darn weather. It was 9 degrees in upstate NY this morning!

  6. Cozy and comfy… that’s what January is about for me! A) it’s cold, and B) I’ve added a few (ahem) pounds over the holidays making everything I own slightly uncomfortable. Because I feel drab, I tend to pick drab colors… but looking over your pics, I think the key is to “fake it till you make it” and add some COLOR to the drab! 🙂

  7. The tunic sweater was what caught my eye on facebook and reminded me to hop over to my feed reader to read the post. But, once I saw the larger pictures I have to agree I don’t think I really like it. I think the problem is it doesn’t have enough structure. Maybe a smaller size?

  8. I think you look fine in the boucle sweater and leggings! Stylish + comfortable = WIN! I like that you mentioned your insecurity and posted it even though you didn’t like how you looked in it.;-)

  9. I actually laughed out loud when I read your “ridonculous” comment. Thank you! That doesn’t happen too often for me! Winter blahs hitting me, too, even in CA!

  10. First of all I think you look great in all of these outfits, and I really think we all go through “phases” where we don’t feel like getting dressed and would rather stay in our yoga pants! It’s ok, I find it usually passes and I can get back to being more excited about my clothes, you are showing us real life, which I appreciate! I love the tan skinny jeans, they look fabulous. Also, i bought the H&M cardigan after seeing it here because i agree, on the model it looked fabulous, on me it looks frumpy but I too wear it anyway because it’s so cozy and warm, not sure it’ll make it into next winter though because I feel like I could fit two of me inside it!!

    1. Oh, no! Sorry I steered you wrong. It looks SO CUTE on. Oh well. Win some and lose some. I think if I were taller, it would be better. And I have a short neck, so I always hate things that are too bulky in that area. But it is warm, so there’s that. 🙂

  11. It’s just the winter doldrums! You look great in all of your outfits.

I have to tell you…I bought the Bobeau drape front cardigan that has been Pinned at least 8 million times in the last year.

It’s so cute on everyone but on me it feels like a blanket. Not flattering at all. I’ve worn it a time or two around the house because it’s warm. They don’t all work out. 🙂

    Keep up the great work!

  12. Don’t be so hard on yourself! You look great AND are providing a wonderful service through your blog! 🙂 PS…love the fur-trimmed vest; I’ve been on the hunt for one since October.

  13. Hi Jolynne!

I live for your Mom style posts! You inspire me more than some unknown magazine person, I identify with you, our lives are so much alike. Except the blogging- I don’t do that!

My question to you is: How tall are you, and how much do you weigh (approximately)? It would help me to know if what you are wearing would work for me.
