Daily Mom Style 10.30.13

fashion-over-40

Happy Wednesday! Once again, I’m sharing my favorite outfits of the week, hoping to inspire you to get out of your yoga pants and maybe even try a new trend! Here’s what I’ve got to show for myself this week.

DAY 1

I wore this outfit on Saturday. Mostly I just ran errands and worked from home, like any ordinary weekday.

infinity scarf and cardi

I knew I wanted to wear my comfy gray UGGs because it was COLD here. I basically built the outfit around them. I pulled on my skinniest skinny jeans because they don’t require any shenanigans to get them tucked into my boots. Then I looked around my room and my eyes landed on this black boyfriend cardi from LOFT that I picked up when I was at the store last week. It was still sitting on my dresser, waiting to be placed in its forever home. From there all I needed was a tank — any color would go with black and gray and denim. I picked out this plum-colored one because it seemed fallish to me.

The infinity scarf I picked up at Target while I was wearing this outfit. It just spoke to me. Oddly it says on the website that it is not sold in stores. Perhaps this was a return? I did notice it was the only one on the rack. I thought it was great because it will go with SO many outfits.

The bracelets were sent to me from Joseph Nogucci, a jewelry designer out of Canada. Joseph Nogucci is giving 10% of  proceeds of the Pink Ribbon Charmballa bracelet (the one on the right) to the Breast Cancer Society of Canada.

DAY 2

I broke out my camo pants for a casual day working from home and running the kids to and fro. (If you’ve had your eye on these, GAP has restocked!!!) It was too cold for my white or gray GAP Essential Tees so I went looking for something else to pair them with. I found this long-sleeve black tee in my dresser drawer, and I figured it would work. It was cold, so I grabbed my jean jacket when I went out to pick up the kids from school.

Now. Here’s the truth of the matter. In these photos, I’m wearing a cool statement necklace I picked up at Francesca’s and my Toms Desert Booties because that is what I thought looked good with this outfit. That’s what I would wear if it mattered. But it didn’t. I ran 7 miles that morning, and I didn’t get a shower till almost 1:00. I threw on my camo jeans and black top because they are comfy and cute, but there was no need for wedges and an uncomfortable necklace that catches in my hair because the only place I went was to pick up my kids from their after school activities.

So I took those photos and then I switched into my comfy Crocs, and I changed out the necklace for a long mixed-metal necklace from Studio Jewel, which, truth be told, is much nicer than the gold statement necklace shown above. I initially chose the bolder necklace because I thought the plain black tee needed some oomph. I had my daughter snap this shot when we got back home.

The first way was really sassy and cute, but the second way is much more practical for my daily life. Even though the Toms Desert Booties are super comfortable, I feel rather silly wearing them around the house all day.

DAY 3

Date Night! My husband and I went out to dinner, so I used the opportunity wear this rust-colored Free People sweater. It’s a few years old and I don’t wear it a ton but it always seems fitting for fall.

The open weave is pretty, but tricky. I never know whether to wear a brown or cream tank under it. I clearly went for cream this time. I like it paired with the gray cords. I’ve also worn it with black and denim, but I always go back to gray. I went for black boots on the bottom. Sometimes I wear chocolate brown. I can’t decide which way I like it better. I grabbed a gray clutch since I didn’t need my big purse that holds the kitchen sink.

The other question I always have when styling this sweater is, necklace or no necklace? I obviously went for necklace this time. This mixed metal Silpada necklace seemed like a good fit. I also wore the coordinating earrings, although they’re hard to see.

I love the sleeves and the cowl neck..

DAY 4

I wore this outfit on Sunday to church and afterwards to a corn maze with the youth group. This outfit was my attempt to wear something nice enough for church and practical enough for the corn maze. Unfortunately I was cold and uncomfortable. I think I should have just brought a sweatshirt, jeans and sneakers to change into. Oh well, live and learn.

denim red tan

(Pardon the shadowy indoor photos. I took these when I got home and after dark and there was no natural light coming in the windows to help me out.)

This outfit is very similar to the one with the camo jeans above. I wanted to wear my Crocs, figuring they were the most comfortable option for doing a lot of walking. (I seem to be building most of my outfits around my shoes these days!!) I wanted to wear my jean jacket, and I thought it would be cute with the tan cords. The only question was, what to wear for a shirt. I wanted to be warm, so I went hunting for a long-sleeve tee. This red Timeless Tee from Banana Republic is the PERFECT long-sleeve tee. I own it in stripes as well. I love the fit — body hugging but not tight, and it’s a nice medium weight too. I thought red and denim and khaki was a nice color combo.

Ironically, Banana Republic is running one of their flash 35% off sales today! So if you want some basic essential t-shirts, this is the time to stock up! Use code BRSHOP35.

The gold necklace and bangles are both recent LOFT purchases. Their jewelry was on a major sale last week!

DAY 5

I wore this outfit to the mall and then to run the kids around after school. I wanted to wear something different so I pulled this striped sweater out of my closet. I paired it with my red jeans, and for half the day I wore my Taos Untold ballet flats.

When I went out, I decided to put on my Buffy Booties, which were provided by Dansko for review a couple years ago. These were so comfortable to walk around in, even with the heel. I forgot how much I love Danskos.

I think the slight heel and the weight of the bootie helps offset the bulkiness of the sweater. Although I gotta say, I’m not loving this sweater. It’s definitely not the most flattering thing I own.

I wore a simple silver necklace, although it sort of gets lost in the texture of the sweater. Still, felt like it needed something.

  1. Thanks for letting us know GAP has restocked the camo pants. I have been crushing on them since your post on how to wear them but they didn’t have my size until now.

Have you ever tried wearing a nude colored cami or tank under your rust colored sweater? Sometimes that works.

    Love these posts!

  2. I made the same mistake when I took my son to a fall festival, with a hay ride, corn maze, etc. I wore a sweater with skinny jeans and riding boots but the whole time I was concerned I would snag my sweater or scratch up my boots…You should do a post on how look ‘fashionable’ wearing a sweatshirt and sneaks! 🙂

  3. I love the scarf in the first one and love the last look–I don’t think I’ve seen you in that sweater before. Very nice! I’m looking into the Dansko shoes.

  4. I love the red sweater and the gray booties, very cute! Didn’t you struggle with that striped sweater last year? You’ve inspired me to go dig out my fall clothes Jo-Lynne… every season I put it off as long as I can then I see one of your posts and I just go get it done! Thank you!!

  5. You dress pretty darn stylishly for errands my friend! As always, you look polished and put together. I wish I had your skinny legs…I want camo print jean so badly!
