December Favorites

It’s hard to believe, but 25 Days of Winter Fashion is half over, and we’re right smack dab in the middle of holiday season! Last night we attended my husband’s holiday work party (stay tuned for pictures on Monday!!!) That event is always on the first weekend of December so I’ve started to see it as the official kick-off for the holidays.

This afternoon I’ll attend our church’s annual ladies Christmas tea, and tonight I’m getting together with friends so let’s just say I am now full-fledged into the Christmas spirit.

I realized yesterday that I haven’t shared my December Favorites yet so I thought I’d round up some of my favorite wardrobe pieces right now, and to piggy-back on yesterday’s post, I’m going to focus on quality basics and show some of the different ways I’ve worn them.

December Favorites

#1. Halogen V-Neck Cashmere Sweater

This v-neck cashmere sweater was featured in yesterday’s post, and it is super soft and flattering and highly versatile. I’m not huge on layering, but it’s a nice one to layer over a button-down shirt if you like that look, and it looks good under quilted vests, leather jackets, blazers, etc.

I wore it a few days ago with boyfriend jeans and mules.

Then I wore it yesterday with my distressed skinnies and burgundy ballet flats. I usually wear a shorter pendant in a v-neck, but I threw this long one on for a change, although I think I prefer the shorter one as in the picture above.

And of course, I’ve worn this sweater under my quilted vest with a striped scarf, as pictured in yesterday’s post. FYI, these J.Crew Excursion quilted down vests are 30% off with code BUNDLEUP.

SALE ALERT >> 30% off full price coats, sweaters, shirts and more at J.Crew with code BUNDLEUP.

#2. AQUA Bias Plaid Blanket Scarf

This bias plaid blanket scarf is GORGEOUS, really nice quality, soft, large, everything to be loved in a blanket scarf. I was so glad I had it on when we went to the football game in 30-degree weather on Thanksgiving Day. At least my top half was warm; my legs were freezing. Right now it’s 25% off PLUS an additional 25% off for Bloomingdale’s Lloyalists, bringing it down to $38. (Makes a great gift too!)

SALE ALERT >> Bloomingdale’s is running their Friends & Family Event, so you get an extra 25% off a large selection of items, including their extensive premium denim department. Then on everything else, you get a $25 rewards card for every $100 you spend. The $25 on $100 is the best offer they ever do. I splurged on this Burberry coat during one of those promotions a couple of years ago.

#3. Stella & Dot Luna Pendant Necklace

I’ve had this necklace for years, but it’s one of my go-to pieces to wear in v-neck tops. It has both silver and yellow gold so it goes with any other jewelry I may be wearing, and it also makes a nice layering piece if you want to pair it with a longer pendant, as shown on the S&D model.

#4. Bernardo Front Zip Moto Jacket

My leather moto jacket is 25% off and under $200, which is a great price for genuine leather. I love this jacket, and fortunately our weather has been mild this fall so I’ve been able to wear it a lot. I wore it with my olive green jeans and a striped shirt as shown here.

I wore it to a concert over my leopard cami with jeans and booties.

I’ve also worn it with a black long sleeve layering tee, leopard scarf, skinny jeans, and taupe slouch booties.

FYI, these AG raw hem ankle legging jeans are 25% off, and they’re one of my favorites. They’re the same style as the distressed ones I wear so much but without the distressing. I like the raw hem, but if you prefer a traditional sewn hem, these AG legging ankle jeans are a good option and also 25% off.

I also wore this leather jacket with burgundy jeans, a charcoal grey sweater, and black mules to go to the mall with my mom one day.

I think one of my favorite ways I’ve worn it is with this black donegal turtleneck, dark wash jeans, and black boots.

And then I wore it over my camel crewneck cashmere sweater with skinny jeans and oxblood suede pumps and a leopard clutch.

This camel sweater is another workhorse in my wardrobe, speaking of quality wardrobe basics I wear over and over again. I’ve worn it under my black quilted vest with distressed skinnies, burgundy suede flats, and a plaid blanket scarf.

I also love it with white jeans, cognac OTK boots, and a plaid infinity scarf.

And I often pair it with leopard flats.

#5. Kenneth Jay Lane Large Glass Pearl Post Earrings

These are not new, and I’ve mentioned them a gazillion times before, but I wear them so much this time of year, I thought they should be included here. The oversized pearls add a touch of sophistication to any outfit, and they’re big enough to make a bit of a statement without interfering with scarves and turtlenecks. I probably wear them 4 or 5 days a week.

#6. GrandeLIPS Hydrating Lip Plumper

I have this lip gloss in three colors now, and I really love it. It’s moisturizing, supposedly plumps the lips up a bit (can’t say I notice this), and the colors have a lot of pigment without being heavy. I first got it in the Lust Red for holiday looks, and I recently added the Midnight Purple to have a deep, rich plum for fall, and the Sunbaked Sedona for a light neutral daytime look. I layer the Sunbaked Sedona over my MAC lip pencil in Spice.

I was wearing the Midnight Purple with this burgundy “at the shoulder sweater” for a fun holiday look.

#7. Leopard Flats

Again, nothing new, but I wear them so much this time of year. Even though I have the Tory Burch travel flats in leopard, and I do like them a lot, I often opt for the Sam Edelman ones because I really like the hair calf look, and the colors are so much more vibrant. Plus they’re like wearing slippers so I often go for them even when I’m just going to be at home all day.

Here are just a few ways I’ve worn them. In the interest of time, I’m not going to post details on each look, but you get the idea!

Okay, so that’s a wrap! I have to get a move on. Paul and I are meeting Alison early this morning to shoot a look for Nike… so stay tuned for that later this week!

  1. I’ll take one of everything!  I always enjoy these “favorites” posts, and I love how you go the extra mile and show different ways to style the pieces.  Santa has a nice, new pair of leopard flats under the tree for me.  ????

  2. Wow…..you really have a lot of different looks in this post with the same items.  So good.  Have fun today and enjoy your events.  I bet you will be the best dressed one there.  Hey….I have a question. How do you show up for events without everyone in the room wearing the same outfit you posted?  Doesn’t all your friends and others who know you want to buy your ideas you post?  I’ve wondered this with Cyndi too.

    1. LOL!!!! Nope, not at all. Most of my friends don’t even read my blog, and we all have different styles anyway. We do enjoy shopping together but we tend to find different things.

  3. HI JoLynne–I love the vee neck cashmere sweater and a few questions.  Overall on the Nordstrom website it has good ratings but there are a good handful of reviews that say the sweater is thin and pills quickly even after one wear.  What are your thoughts on that?  Maybe it doesn’t matter because you only wear a sweater a few times or for one season and then pass it on to someone or donate.

    1. There are some sweaters I only wear a few times, but I’ve had this one for going on two years, and I wear it a lot. It does pill, but I don’t have a single sweater that doesn’t. I actually bought a couple high end sweaters last year, thinking they wouldn’t pill, and they do too. I don’t know if it’s modern manufacturing or if sweaters have always pilled or what, but it seems to be an epidemic. (Ha!) I don’t think it pills terribly – not as bad as cheaper sweaters tend to do, and I did invest in one of those sweater stones to try to de-pill them from time to time, but I’m lazy and I haven’t bothered. 🙂 https://amzn.to/2ic4KlA

As far as being thin, I would describe this as a mid-level quality cashmere. Meaning, some cashmere is more tightly woven so doesn’t seem as thin, but those are going to be more like $100 and up. For a better quality cashmere, you may like J.Crew or Ann Taylor.

All that to say, I think this sweater is a good value for the price point. Hope that helps!

  4. Thanks for sharing about basics the past 2 days. I love the idea of using good basic pieces in different ways. It is practical and smart. I hope you enjoy your day!

  5. Love the post . I purchased a poncho. For the first time I got the black and white one I love it for this time of year. I normally wear cardigans and puffer vest as well Keep up the good work! Blessings

  6. Love all these! Love my leopard flats. Such a great classic look that adds a little style to a simple outfit. Thanks for helping me stay on trend.

  7. I love how you not only shared the items you’re wearing a lot now, but also different ways to wear them. These are all super versatile basics that will get much use! I know my faux pearl studs are my most worn earrings ever. They just seem to polish nearly any outfit in a classy but subtle way.
One that is new to me but I know I’ll wear a ton is the camel cashmere sweater. I ended up trying 3 different sizes but found the keeper. And the Black Friday price was fantastic! No regrets here. 🙂

  8. I’m late to the party, but I have a question on the JCrew Excursion vest.  It’s currently 40% off (12/15,) but does it go on sale, to your recollection, deeper to 50% closer to/immediately after Christmas or into January?  Just wondering if I should jump on the black or navy at 40% off before it is sold out, or if there could be deeper discounts coming soon to a present to me:-)

      1. Jumped!  Black vest purchased, coming in 12/22.  Ho, ho, ho, to me!  Thanks for getting back to me so quickly.  I wasn’t sure if I should risk it being sold out in the hopes of getting a better deal.

        1. I think you’ll love it! I really don’t think they go any lower than that – the most was probably the 40% off plus 10% off that during black Friday, but I don’t think they do those big of discounts after the holidays. It will be interesting to watch and see. Hold onto your receipt – if it does drop, they may price adjust it.
