Denim Boyfriend Shorts Outfit for Summer

Hi, friends. Happy Tuesday! It’s hard to believe, but 22 Days of Summer Fashion is already half over. Today I’m styling a casual denim boyfriend shorts outfit.

Denim Boyfriend Shorts Outfit for Summer

These Kut from the Kloth boyfriend shorts have a subtly relaxed fit, and the slight destruction and rolled cuff give them an effortlessly casual vibe.

They’re made of a thick, soft denim with just enough stretch to be comfortable, and they don’t bag out.

I normally like my shorts more in the 4 – 5″ range, but this 7″ length is nice for a change. They hit right around mid-thigh, which is a flattering length on most women.

Even with the relaxed styling, the leg opening isn’t super wide, and the sewn cuffs keep them looking nice and neat even after washing.

These shorts run TTS (I’m wearing the 6) and they’re available in a wide range of sizes (from 00 – 18.) You can find them at kutfromthekloth.com and Evereve, and there are a few sizes at Zappo’s.

This linen henley is from Old Navy, and it’s made of a soft-washed, lightweight linen/poly blend. It comes in a bunch of colors and a few prints. I really like the gathered shoulders and dolman sleeves.

It has a slightly curved hem and a relaxed fit, and I’d say it runs true to size; I’m wearing the small.

FYI, the link to my shirt defaults to the petite sizes, for some reason, so be sure to click on the regular sizes if that’s what you’re looking for.

I’ve shared these Marc Fisher sandals several times before. I love the studded embellishments and square open toe.

These are the medium natural leather, but they also come in other colors.

They’re extremely comfortable with soft leather straps; and because of the way the straps are designed, they are secure and easy to walk in.

These sandals are 40% off at Nordstrom, and they run TTS. I have the 8.

I love how my Victoria Emerson wrap bracelet complements the olive in the top and the beige in the sandals.

Unfortunately, this one is long gone, but she has plenty of other gorgeous bracelets to choose from, and she’s running a 40% off sitewide sale right now!

I also wore silver drop earrings and my rag & bone sunnies.

This is the type of outfit I’m pretty much living in right now. I’m usually either working from home or running errands, and this look is casual and comfortable but pulled together.

  1. Cute outfit, may be time to add 3 inches of mulch to the front yard beds after a good weeding. Love your blog.

    1. Too funny, I almost wrote a disclaimer about the landscape. It is way overdue, but no way can I weed anything with these hips. I’ve hired 2 guys to come and weed all the beds, but they couldn’t come until this Thursday… I cannot WAIT.

  2. Cute and comfy looking outfit!
Love this 22 days of Summer you and Cyndi are doing!
I think your flower beds look great! 😉

  3. Such a cute outfit! Just ignore snarky remarks from people feeling the need to negatively comment – your landscaping is gorgeous! I wish mine looked as great as yours does! 🙂

  4. Cute ootd! Love those shorts! Especially the fact that they are sewn down at the seams. The top is definitely one I’d like to purchase. Exactly how many summer tops do I need? That’s the question. Anyway, sending good thoughts and prayers to help with your day to day life.

    1. Haha, when I find out, I’ll let you know. 😉 I have way too many right now! I was just looking at my closet, and I’m running out of hangers. That’s when I know it’s time to purge.

  5. I love the Kut boyfriend shorts!  That look is my usual summer uniform.  I am so sorry to hear about your hardships and troubles; when it rains, it pours.  I hope that your other hip pain resolves and your allergies calm down.  It has been a trying time.  A friend once said when COVD first started:  this will be a marathon, not a sprint.  I am starting to feel that too.  Trying to find the positives.  Sending you virtual hugs!

    1. Yes, we still have a long time before we are out of the woods with COVID. My daughter said yesterday, “When do you think we’ll be able to go back to a Sixers game???” I told her fall of 2021, and she was aghast. But I do think it will be a year or two before we are back to any semblance of normal. And yet, this too shall pass… eventually!

  6. I really like this outfit; it’s right up my alley. I have at least 3 linen summer tops already, though. I am really sorry for all the physical problems you are having. I can’t believe anyone would nitpick your landscaping, especially when you are going through so much in your life. You are not alone. I, too have back/hip issues which are acting up again, and now I have been diagnosed with breast cancer, found by a routine mammogram. When it rains, it pours. We still have serious ongoing family issues and I am overwhelmed. I appreciate what you do here to keep things light.

  7. Really sharp looking comfy outfit!  So sorry to hear your other hips is giving you fits now….plus the allergies.   Such strange times for all of us.  Now is the time, more than ever, to encourage and support each other.  So even though I never met you personally (I feel like I do through your blog), I’ll certainly be praying for you & what’s going on in your life.  I’m sure all of us gals have so much going on behind the scenes.  Let’s all be kind and supportive!  And prayer wouldn’t hurt as well!  🙏🏻♥️🙏🏻

    1. Gina. You are sooo right. If we know the Lord we are all Gods children and need to pray for each other. Jo-Lynne I’ll pray for you too. It’s hard to have physical health issues. This time in our world makes it all amplified too. Love your outfit you styled on the blog.

  8. Hi Jo-Lynne. I’m so sorry to hear that your other hip is giving you grief. A great summer outfit and more importantly, I enjoyed getting a glimpse of your flowerbeds. I can’t believe someone would post a negative comment about them. Thank you for all that you do.

  9. Since I come here for the fashion, and not the landscaping, I will comment on the fashion only 😉 Love the shorts! Also, sorry about your other hip. How ironic that it happened in PT!

  10. I am so sorry you have another hip issue. I’ll be praying for you. 2020 is certainly a strange year. You look great though. Are you still doing IF?

    1. Thanks, Mary. Yes, I am. I am still figuring out how much and what I can eat and maintain my ideal weight, but IF is definitely the eating schedule that works best for me.

  11. Good Morning! Great outfit – simple and put together. I just purchased the top – love that color. Sorry to hear you continue to have hip and back issues – it seems like it is always something in our lives. Take care of you first so you can be there for your family.

  12. You look great. Love those sandals.  Sorry you’re struggling right now. Hope everything is better soon.

  13. Jo-Lynne,
Love this casual, every day look.
I’m sorry to hear about your health issues. It just adds to the incredible amount of stress we are experiencing. I appreciate that you stay sure and steady during these uncertain times. God bless you and I’ll be praying good health and peace for you.
    Mary Ellen

  14. Jo Lynne sorry to hear about all your hip and allergy issues.    That’s so very frustrating.  I hope your allergist can figure out the best step for you in controlling your flare ups.   I had a bad hip problem when I was about your age and found out it was an inflamed bursa.  But your problem might be lower back as you mentioned.   Hang in there and keep researching that.   Does anti inflammatory help you at all and can you take them ?    Hope you feel better soon.  I love these shorts and top you showed today.  They look so comfortable.    Take card of yourself.   Bev Brown

    1. Thanks, Bev. I do have an anti inflammatory from my doc but I admit, I’m not real consistent with it. I worry about causing tummy troubles, since I’ve had a lot of those throughout my life. Maybe I should get back on that for a few weeks and see if it helps, in conjunction with the PT.

  15. Love this, it’s pretty much my kind of summer outfit too!  I just bought the shirt in green and another in white.  I really enjoy your blog each day, though I don’t often comment.  Your blog is definitely a bright spot in this world!

  16. I have these shorts! I bought them last year, when I was looking for some additional styles to add to my closet.
I found that I like the extra length on the leg during baseball tournaments for my kids. The fields often have metal bleachers that get really hot in the sun, and I can avoid burning the skin on my legs when sitting. It works in hot cars with leather seats too. I know it sounds like a random reason, but it’s true! Lol

  17. I got these shorts last year and I love them! True to size and very comfortable with the bit of stretch that they have. The leg is a little more fitted on me. If anyone’s on the fence, just order them. I think you’ll be happy you did.

I had a hip replacement at 55 yrs. old. I’ve been athletic my whole life. I simply wore it out. The pain I experienced before my surgery was horrible. Sometimes my hip would just lock up and I would scream out in pain. I didn’t want to have surgery but I’m glad I did. I’m back to tennis and hiking and strength training and mountain biking. I’m hoping I don’t wear it out too soon but I’m not one to sit on the sidelines. I guess it’s a chance I’m willing to take. Hang in there…I really hope you get relief soon.

    1. Wow, a hip replacement at 55 is young! But I’m so glad it went well for you. I hope it doesn’t get to that, but so far, I can’t seem to get much relief with PT, so we shall see. I’ll be curious what the MRI of my back reveals. My pain is more under my tush and down my leg.

  18. Yes your landscaping looks great:) and so does this outfit. I just ran into old navy last night and didn’t take the time to try on that tee:( my loss. I’ll need to revisit and give it a try.. I guess I needed to see it on you first:)  sometimes it just hanging there on the rack doesn’t do it justice 😉

    1. Yeah, I don’t know that I would have taken a second glance on the hanger, but when I saw it online, I really liked the neckline. You should order! Or go back and get it. 🙂 #enabler

  19. I really like your outfit, especially the shorts! Sorry that there are some crazy things happening in your life. It seems to be part of the times right now. I hope things get better soon! Hang in there!

  20. Dang it on your hip!!  You’re not supposed to sustain a new injury at PT.  I sure hope you can get it cleared up.  Yay on David getting to be a camp counselor this summer.  I know that he is thrilled.  I will keep your family in my prayers.  I really like that tee!  Old Navy & GAP are having a good sale at the moment, says someone that placed an order earlier today.  I hope you have a nice evening.

    1. I know, right?1? She really worked on the new injury yesterday, and it’s feeling much better. My original one, though… ugh. It’s really nagging me today. I guess I just have to give it time and wait to see what the MRI shows.

Glad you found some good deals!

  21. Cute outfit that looks really comfortable as well. I’m hoping and praying your health issues improve in the near future.
I always look forward to your posts and enjoy your heartfelt thoughts. Take care!😊

  22. I did allergy shots every week back in the late 90s and early 2000s. At the time I didn’t think it was helping that much, but I have to admit that in the past 20 years my asthma has calmed considerably. I didn’t develop asthma until after a pulmonary embolism in my mid twenties, so who knows. I never had allergies as a child.

  23. I am so sorry about yet  another hip problem. I so relate as I’m your reader that broke my hip about a year ago. Honestly I thought no surgery was the way to go when the dr said the location of the break was tricky. So bedrest. My life has been upside down since.

A new development this week – my left arthritic knee has gone crazy. I started having such pain & I couldn’t put any weight or walk on it!  Really?? So now I’m waiting to find out if it’s a Bakers Cyst behind the knee or something else. Ice & heat and I’m able to walk stiff-legged, but I’m walking.

I say all this to encourage you to ask questions, get a variety of options, and even try to find others who’ve experienced what you’re going through, then make decisions. In my case, I truly think I’d have been better off having a hip replacement. And possibly even get a 2nd & 3rd orthopedic opinion.

Hang in & keep moving as safely as possible. Loved the shirt & shorts – and the skin care info. I’ve used Philosophy products and actually will probably buy these for summer as well.

    Thinking of you!!

  24. Bought the Old Navy shirt in the patterned black. So cute! Could wear casual or dressy. Thanks for your fun posts.
