Quick and Easy Beach Makeup Routine

jo joey trina tina

I love reader questions. They keep me in post topics.

Jen asks:

Do you have any tips for a quick makeup routine for at the beach? I don’t want to look frumpy, but I don’t want a full makeup job, either.

I thought this was a good topic for a post, so here we are!

First, I will admit, I am not one of those girls who won’t leave the house without makeup. I used to be, but I’ve gotten lazy. I think it happened as exercise and running became more and more of a priority. I have friends who show up at races with basic makeup on, but that just never occurred to me. I’m just going to sweat it off anyway, right?

I feel similarly about the beach. If I know I’m going to end up showering and getting all gussied up for dinner later, I probably wouldn’t wear any makeup because I’m lazy and don’t want to have to take it off and reapply.

However, I totally applaud you wanting to look human on the beach, especially if you know you’re going to end up in photos. (See above.)

For a quick makeup routine, whether it’s for the beach or a lazy Saturday, here’s what I would recommend(shopping links provided by my affiliate partners.)

1. Jane Iredale PurePressed Base // 2. Nars Blush // 3. Lancome Mascara // 4. Sonia Kashuk Eye Shadow Palette // 5. Sonia Kashuk Ultra Luxe Lipgloss

Quick & Easy Beach Makeup Routine

1. Mineral Powder. A mineral powder has enough coverage to even out your skin tone without being heavy or shiny. Plus it’s quick and easy to apply — make sure to apply to your eyelids as well. I love my Jane Iredale PurePressed Base. UPDATE 6/14: Another option is a good CC Cream. I’m obsessed with this Supergoop CC Cream after a reader recommended it to me!

2. Blush. Again, easy to apply quickly, and you definitely want to add some color to your cheeks if you’ve just taken it out with your powder. I love this blush by Nars. I can’t even put the name of it in here, I do not want to attract THAT KIND of Google traffic. *grin*

3. Mascara. If nothing else, put on some mascara. And always, ALWAYS curl your eyelashes first.

4. Eyebrow filler. For me filling in my eyebrows is important. Mine are so thin, if nothing else I would do this and mascara. See my tutorial on how I use eye shadow as eyebrow filler. I love this eye shadow palette. If you want, you can dip your pinky finger in one of the lighter pink or brown shades and wipe it on your eyelids for some color. You can also do this with your blush.

5. Lipgloss or your favorite chapstick. I love a tinted lipgloss. It keeps my lips moist, gives me a bit of color, and it’s not too showgirl for a day at the beach or a Saturday of errands.

That should only take five minutes. And then you can feel human all day long!

  1. I want to comment because #1 I live in a beach community in Florida so I’m on the beach A LOT. And #2 I run 5 – 6 days a week. For most of my life I felt self-conscious being seen in public without make-up. That all changed 4 years ago when I spent a lot of time in the hospital with my son. My focus shifted dramatically. I needed other people in my life to lean on and I no longer cared if they saw me bare-faced with bad hair. It just didn’t matter anymore. It was freeing. I realized there is so much in life I really can’t control no matter how much I’d like to. When I accepted that, I also began to accept myself in my own skin.

I’ll just put my two cents worth in about my make-up routine and the beach: waterproof mascara MAYBE, sunscreen, hat, glasses – ALWAYS unless I’m actually swimming
Running: liner and mascara sometimes; make-up and sweat do not mix
To me wearing foundation for water sports, beach time and running/working out doesn’t really make sense
For me personally, it comes down to my focus during those times and also good skin care.
On another note, I need a good blend-able eye shadow in neutral tones (for when I’m not at the beach or running! :)- do you recommend the Sonia Kashuk set?

    1. That’s funny, because I didn’t wear a stitch of makeup when I was in the hospital with my son either. I didn’t have time, nor did I care. It is definitely freeing. 🙂

Since I don’t get in the water above my waist, I’m fine wearing some light foundation and mascara to the beach (and pool, for that matter, lol). But I hear ya, if I was a swimmer, I wouldn’t bother.

I do like that eye shadow a lot, it has a decent pigmentation and it wears well all day, especially if you use an eye shadow primer with it.

  2. Thank you SO much for taking the time to blog an answer to my question. I am definitely checking these out so that I am ready to go next month. I love the simplicity of it, and the colors are exactly what I was trying to figure out 🙂

  3. Great tips, Jo-Lynne! Like yourself, running and exercising is a huge priority for me. Since I’m constantly sweating during my cardio, I never wear makeup. The only time I will put some coverage on is if I’m lifting and grabbing lunch or a juice or smoothie right afterwards.
But as for the beach, I’ve been debating on whether or not to dabble in a bit of makeup, especially this upcoming Memorial Day Weekend. I will be surrounded by beautiful people down in AC so I just might use your mineral makeup tip=)

  4. I guess it’s all about your perspective. I was in the hospital with my daughter last fall. The stay was unexpected so I was there, in a different city for three days. She was only 10 months old so I couldn’t really leave her. My sister, thankfully lives in that town and came over after work on the second day. She stayed there while I went to her house and took a shower. She laid out her toiletries, make-up and a choice of clothes. It almost felt like a spa. I felt like a new person. I needed the break, and I needed the shower and make-up. I came back and I felt awake, alert and ready to keep going.

Anyway, last year I found a product called “Supergoop CC cream” https://www.dermstore.com/product_SPF+35+Daily+Correct+CC+Cream+_48734.htm

We stayed in Maine for a month (which, by the way, is where I felt free to not wear make-up. It was just kind of a beautiful, rugged, outdoorsy place where I was free from the pressure to look a certain way. I wore keens and very little make-up the entire time. That’s a big deal for me 🙂 ) I wanted to find some sort of tinted moisturizer with sunscreen that I could just throw on in the morning with a little waterproof mascara. This stuff was amazing and by the end of the month, my skin looked and felt so much better!

  5. Hi there. I am wondering where you got your swimsuit top at shown above, and any others you recommend. I have been having a hard time finding one with support!

  6. I probably shouldn’t have said anything at all about not wearing make-up in the hospital with my son. My situation was a life changer. My son was diagnosed at the age of 12 with stage 4 brain cancer. It was life or death for us in the hospital and so much of my perspective changed as a result of his illness and death less than 4 months after diagnosis. I guess I added it only to say that many things changed including me.
I regret adding that part in this space but now feel I need to explain.
