Easy Fall DIY Home Decor Project: Gourd Candles

With Halloween over, now is the perfect time to grab a few mini gourds or pumpkins on clearance, or give those that you may have used for Halloween decor a makeover for your Thanksgiving decor.

Hi, it’s Tonya back with a quick and easy autumn project that will make the perfect addition to your Thanksgiving table or decor.

Easy Fall DIY home decor project: gourd candles

This easy project only takes about an hour, and is perfect for decorating your home in time for Thanksgiving. I picked up the three gourds above at Michael’s for about $3 ($1 each).

What you need:

  • Foam gourds or pumpkins
  • Tea light candles: I used the flameless ones
  • Spray paint: I used Krylon brushed metallic and Krylon silver glitter
  • Sharpie
  • X-ACTO knife

Instructions:

Step 1: Remove the stalks from the gourds – they should twist or pull right out.

Step 2: Place the tea light candle you plan on using on the gourd and trace around it with the Sharpie.

Step 3: Using the X-ACTO knife, cut out the center of the circle inside the Sharpie line, then pull enough of the foam out that the candle will sit neatly into the space.

Step 4: Apply a coat of the base spray paint – the Krylon brushed metallic. Set aside to dry.  You can do more than one coat if you like. I actually only did one because I liked the tint of green from the gourds showing through a little.

Step 5: Spray a coat of glitter spray over the top and again set aside to dry. Note: This will take longer to dry than the base coat.

Step 6: Place your tea light candles inside the gourds. And you’re done!

I hope you all have a wonderful Thanksgiving. We will also be celebrating my oldest sons 19th birthday that day.

  1. I am so grateful to you for this idea! I have those little gourds fm the Dollar Tree, and yours look so elegant when painted silver! This will change my whole decorating plan this fall! I have just finished my living room in a coastal, beachy look. I did not want to take things down yet. This will make it all fit together. I can’t thank you enough! I love your blog! I will visit often. A New Follower of Yours,
