I love the preschool years. Yes, every age has its charms (and its pitfalls) but there is something particularly precious about the preschool years. They are learning and growing both socially and cognitively at such a rapid pace. (And of course, they still think their mommy hung the moon.)
After 8 years of preschool, we are officially moving on. Next year my littlest will climb on that big yellow bus and go to Kindergarten, and soon all 3 of my children will be in school for 7 hours a day. It is really hard to believe.
Last Friday, I attended my very last preschool Mother’s Day Tea. I’ve been attending these programs for 8 years. They are so very precious. There is always a snack to share with your little one, a handmade gift waiting for you at your place at the table, and a short program where they usually sing a song or two about mommies.
Then we play a game I have come to love. It is called, “Guess the Mommy!”
The teacher reads a short paragraph that the kids wrote about their mommy (with prompts, I’m sure) and we all have to guess who it is. It’s always good for a few laughs and perhaps even a tear or two.
Here is what my soon-to-be preschool graduate wrote about me:
We go to the mall and we buy some pretty clothes for me and my sister.
She plays games with me.
We play with my dollhouse.
She has black hair and brown eyes.
She looks pretty when she wears tank tops and sweats.
She works at her computer.
She likes to eat lunch. She likes to eat a hamburger.
I give her a hug when she gets me from school.
I love her a lot.
She loves me a lot too. I would like to give you a flower – a pink one because you like flowers.
My favorite was the tank tops and sweats line. That’s when she had me and I knew whose Mommy was being described.
I’m certainly looking forward to the years ahead, but I will miss preschool. I have a feeling it will be a long time before I can drive by her school and not feel a little bit choked up. These were good years.

Wow…I can’t imagine what that will feel like. As hard as it is for my oldest to grow up and not have as many parent programs, I have the satisfaction of knowing that Will hasn’t even hit preschool yet. We were at a school auction on Friday and they recognized the “Finale Families” which are all the families whose last child is graduating the 8th grade at our school. I thought to myself that by the time Will graduates 8th grade, we will have been at the school for 21 years! Yikes. Anyway, congrats to your daughter on her big milestone!
My youngest will be moving into Kindergarten, as well. It is so hard to believe. I will have one starting at elementary school and one starting middle school. But, she is definitely ready. At least it will be half day next year, so she will be home part of the day.
I love those “Who is the Mommy?”-type games. Your post reminded me of a story my friend told me about her preschooler having to complete a questionnaire about her as a Mother’s Day surprise. The first question was, “What is your Mommy’s name?” When her daughter couldn’t come up with anything other than “Mommy”, the teacher asked, “What does Daddy call her?” Her daughter’s answer: “Sexy”. The teachers had a good laugh over that one. 🙂
Preschool is my favorite too!!! And I love this *Who is mommy?* game! Love it! Funny that she thought to say tank top and sweats!!!:) You have an adorable little girl!

My daughter would have said, “she says that she’d stay in her pajamas all day if she could.” Not nearly as cute.
How sweet! I love that they play this game and sing songs. We had a tea party this year and it consisted entirely of muffins and orange juice. Not a song, a performance, a game, or anything else, really. I was somewhat dissapionted

I am just about to embark on the very beginning of the preschool years. I cannot imagine getting beyond them. I get a little teary thinking about it…

they are great years… but so are the elementary years… and even the middle school years! as mine are now in college {yikes} i can say that i love this season too. motherhood is so special. it’s been sweet to watch my MIL continue to be a mom to her four kids… and their spouses. a sweet sweet blessing indeed.

What a sweet post. I have to say I particularly liked it because I am a preschool teacher! Last week we had our Mother’s Day teas, as well. It’s always such a hectic few weeks leading up to the day of the tea. (Teaching the children the songs and getting all of the special crafts done. All while not letting the children sense the hectic-ness!) 🙂 It’s so nice to hear that mothers actually enjoy these events. I loved what your daughter had to say about you, too! Quite adorable!
