Fall Outfit Basics with Nordstrom

Greetings! Welcome back to 26 Days of Fall Fashion, where I team up with Cyndi Spivey and we each style a new fall outfit every day except Sundays during the month of September.

For today, I put together a simple outfit that’s a combination of some of my favorite fall basics — colored denim, leopard flats, black sweater, and a neutral handbag.

Fall Fashion for Women Over 40: This simple outfit is a combination of some of my favorite fall basics -- colored denim, leopard flats, a black sweater, and a neutral handbag.

I picked up this tie hem sweater at the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale back in July. I noticed it when the catalog came out because of the fun tie hem, and it was one of the first things I purchased the day the sale started.

I always have at least one black sweater in my fall wardrobe because they go with so much and I enjoy wearing black near my face. I feel like it’s one of my better colors. If you don’t love wearing black near your face, almost any neutral works in an outfit like this one.

I try to look for sweaters that have a cool texture or a fun detail to add interest to my outfit, and I love the tie hem detail as well as the seaming detail down the front of this cozy turtleneck. The ribbed texture adds interest, and the mock turtleneck is just high enough to be cozy but doesn’t have the extra bulk of a traditional fold-over turtleneck. It’s made of a blend of nylon, wool, and alpaca so it is super cozy and warm. For size reference, this is a small.

I paired this black sweater with another one of my go-to fall wardrobe basics, colored denim. I like to wear deep, muted colors in the fall, and these evergreen skinny jeans (another #NSale purchase) work well with so many different tops. I’ve already worn them several times.

My exact jeans are sold out, but I’ve also tried this pair by Kut from the Kloth, and I can vouch for how well they fit. The main difference is they don’t have the raw hem, but if you like that feature, you can cut off the hem.

To pull together this simple outfit, I wore leopard flats and carried a leather handbag in a rich cognac color. Both are Tory Burch. The prices are on the higher end, but I don’t mind paying more for my wardrobe basics because they get a lot of wear and tear — especially shoes and handbags.

Tory Burch is always on point in both of these categories, and I usually get my Tory pieces at Nordstrom so I can earn rewards points for Nordstrom Notes. Plus Nordstrom always has a great selection of her styles both in store and online, and I know I have plenty of time to make up my mind and make any necessary returns.

I’m a huge fan of her Minnie travel flats, and I recently added this leopard pair to my wardrobe. Leopard flats are a fall wardrobe essential that I often wear to jazz up a basic outfit. They pretty much go with anything, and they always take a simple outfit up a notch.

I wear ballet flats a lot because they’re easy to slip on and off and they look so good with skinny jeans. Another reason the Minnie travel flats are awesome is they fold up so you can put them in the included shoe bag and stash them in your purse if you need a backup when you’re traveling or doing a lot of walking.

These shoes did take some breaking in, but now they’re incredibly comfortable, and I can walk in them for hours. The website says to size up if you’re in between, and I would agree with that recommendation. I run between an 8 and 8.5 in most shoes, and I wear an 8.5 in these. They were a little snug at first, but the 9 was definitely too big so the folks at Nordstrom stretched them a bit where they were pinching my big toe and now they’re perfect.

Speaking of Tory Burch for fall basics, this cognac hobo is definitely one of my better investments in the handbag department. I bought it last summer, and it’s gotten a ton of use over the past year. I carry it all year-round, but I especially find myself gravitating to it in the fall. The leather is soft and supple, it’s extremely well-made, and it’s the perfect size for carrying all of the essentials. Plus this bark color is a wonderful neutral that goes with just about everything.

This exact bag has been discontinued, but here are some of my current Tory favorites at Nordstrom. Any of these would make a fabulous go-to everyday handbag, and they are all classics that won’t go out of style.

Finally, I accessorized with a gold pendant necklace and a stack of Alex and Ani wire bangles. The necklace helps break up the expanse of black sweater, and the bangles are one of my go-to accessories for casual outfits.

This is the kind of outfit I live in during the fall. It’s cute and casual and comfortable enough to wear running errands or even around the house working from home all day, but I feel attractive and put-together. When you have a good foundation of basic wardrobe pieces in your closet each season, getting dressed in the morning is a breeze.

  1. Great outfit, Jo-Lynne, love the black side tie sweater. I see you’re at the outlets….my daughter and I were there yesterday and noticed a Tory Burch outlet store is coming!! Exciting news!! We got there at 10am, and left by 12:30, when it got REALLY crowded! I almost bought a pair of olive green Paige skinny jeans at Nordstrom Rack….but I already have a pair very similar. Can’t wait to dig them out and wear on a regular basis!

  2. I love this outfit and I would have sworn just looking at the pictures that sweater was navy until I started reading. I was thinking how great navy looked with the olive and I’d have never thought of that, so there ya’ go. Maybe I’ll try navy with my olive green jeans. I’ve been out of town for 2 1/2 weeks so my blog reading has been very spotty. I guess during that time you changed over your design. Looks great! I’m wanting to do the same for mine but haven’t found just what I’m looking for yet. Happy Tuesday Jo-Lynne!

    1. Hey Lisa, I highly recommend Lindsay at Purr Design if you’re looking for someone to help with branding. And funny that you thought the sweater was navy. I was thinking that navy would be nice with this outfit too!

  3. I am going to look for a pair of leopard flats.  I think they will be on trend for many years and work better than the mules.  I could get a lot of wear out of evergreen pants, so they are being added to my wish list as well.  I’m ready for some college football, even though my team lost last night, after playing double overtime, and Fall temps!

    1. Well, I thought fall was here to stay but today I’m not so sure. It feels like summer again, but I’m not complaining. It got too cold too soon last week. I hope we get to enjoy some in-between weather for a while.

  4. Oh love those shoes!!!! Just wore my olive green pants for the first time today. But still hot outside so paired them with an off white jersey/ lace tank. I thought the sweater was navy too, lol. Love how it ties. It’s nice to have added detail to a top. Have a wonderful day. Looking forward to a trip to the USA soon so I can visit the outlets.Love the shopping and the prices. Never disappointed.

  5. I chuckled because I saw Cyndi’s post first and it’s olive and navy… thought great minds think alike! Love this outfit!

  6. I love this look!!! I realized that I don’t have a nice selection of sweaters, I got rid of them a few months ago and now I regret it. Excited to see more looks from you this fall!!!

  7. LOVE the outfit! I thought the sweater was navy, too, until I read your post. I think navy would work just as well. Love the leopard print, too. A friend of mine who is a tall red head wears a lot of leopard prints. That and glitzy jewelry is her signature.

  8. Hi Jo-Lynn, this is a stunning outfit and really suits your chic look. The sweater would be great in these times, and maybe later on this autumn when days start to feel colder. I also liked your shoes, in fact I had a pair which is quite similar to those, and were quite stiff in the beginning, now seems that are more comfortable. Have you ever considered putting on an ankle bracelet, a very dainty one, maybe gold or silver. I believe that would really suits you.

    keep it up. kim
