Fall Completer Pieces with Kohl’s

I’m a summer girl through and through, but I can’t help but get excited about fall fashion because it allows so many more opportunities for layering and mixing and matching outfits.

It’s so hot during the summer months here in Philly that I don’t even want to think about layers, so I really only have jewelry to jazz up my basic looks, but in the fall, there are all kinds of options for completer pieces to take an ordinary tee and jeans up a notch or two.

What is a completer piece? It’s generally a 3rd piece of clothing that you layer on top of your foundation pieces to add interest and finish off (or complete) an outfit. Today I’m partnering with Kohl’s to style two looks that show how adding a completer piece can take a simple outfit to a whole new level.

I started with a white tee and dark wash skinny jeans. This SONOMA essential tee has a modest v-neck, and it’s made of a nice thick cotton that isn’t see-through at all, making it a great everyday basic. Best of all, no boob pocket! For size reference, I’m wearing a small.

These Levi’s jeans are called slimming skinny jeans, and they really do give you a nice long, lean look. They’re stretchy, but they have great recovery, and the pockets are designed to lift and shape the rear view. #yesplease! For size reference, I’m in the 8 and they’re a tad snug, but they do give some with wear so I think they’re the right size.

I went with neutral ankle boots for both outfits because they’re easy to wear and on trend. Those of you who don’t like high heels will love these. The perforation details and split shaft add interest and texture, the taupe color is super versatile, and with a comfortable 1″ heel, you can walk in them all day.

For the first outfit, my completer piece is this slimming SONOMA ribbed cardigan in a gorgeous shade called spice marl. I love how the rust color speaks to fall, but it has pink undertones so it flatters my cool coloring. It also comes in a bunch of other color options, if this one isn’t for you.

I love the pockets and the split side detail, and this is my favorite length for a cardigan. It’s long enough to be elongating and slenderizing, but not so long as to be overwhelming, making it practical and easy to wear all day long. This sweater is super soft and comfortable, and it runs true to size; I’m wearing a small.

I accessorized with a long layered necklace and a beaded stretch bracelet. Layering delicates is the current trend in jewelry, and I love it because it makes a statement without taking over the outfit, plus they’re lightweight and don’t interfere with your daily tasks.

When you add a cardigan in a flattering color to a basic t-shirt and jeans, it instantly levels up the look and makes it more finished. This is the magic of a “completer piece.”

My second outfit uses a camo utility jacket as the completer piece. Camo print is a huge trend this fall, and it instantly updates this classic fall jacket.

This SONOMA utility jacket is a lightweight cotton with a hint of spandex, so it’s comfortable to wear as a part of your outfit, not just a jacket to take off when you get inside.

I cuffed the sleeves and popped the collar to give it a little extra style, but you can wear it however is most comfortable. It also has a drawstring waist that allows you to adjust it to create a flattering silhouette.

If camo isn’t your thing, this jacket comes in about 10 other colors. I like the idea of a utility jacket in a color other than olive green, which has become a little tired lately.

This time, I went with silver accessories — a curved bar beaded bracelet set and this hammered double ring pendant. I can’t seem to find the pendant online, so if you see it, let me know so I can link it!

I carried this taupe shoulder bag with both looks, although I like this color better with the boots in the cardigan outfit. (FYI, it also comes in cognac, as well as black and red.)

I’m always a sucker for a hobo style handbag, and I love the buckle detail on this one. It’s the perfect size for everyday, and because it’s faux leather, the price is really reasonable.

I love how this camo utility jacket completes the look and makes a simple white tee and dark wash jeans look current and effortlessly casual.

Kohl’s has long been my go-to for kids clothes, but these outfits show that Kohl’s can be a one-stop shop for the whole family. They have a great selection of on-trend products at great price points, and I love the BOPUS (buy online, pick up in-store) option. That suits my busy life just fine. I can do all my shopping online from the comfort of home and then drive over and pick it up at my local store, usually on the same day.

Their sales are great too. Right now Kohl’s is running a promo with $10 off $50 or more on your Women’s Style Event purchase with code FALLSTYLE10, and of course there’s always Kohl’s Cash. If you need a wardrobe refresh for fall, you won’t want to miss it.

  1. Good morning, Jo-Lynne!! Loved both outfits today! I especially like the spice colored sweater and the jacket!!! I have been looking to purchase a few jackets this fall! You mentioned that the olive green utility jacket has been trending for a long time and I agree! But what about an olive green faux leather jacket I have my eye on? What are your thoughts on that…vs a black one? I have warmer-toned skin and black tends to wash me out. Thank you for all you do!!!

  2. Love both looks Jo-Lynne. We just can’t stop the summer weather. LOL
I’m picking up new items for the fall but not sure how much wear I’m going to get. Hopefully it just means our winter will be a lot longer coming and shorter. Well let’s hope.
    Have a great weekend.

  3. Hi Jo Lynne,  love the completer pieces! I am a T-shirt and jeans person so a completer piece is a must for me. Thanks for showing a couple different ideas! I am starting the same program as you, Faster way to weight loss. Hope we both are successful!

  4. Jo Lynne,
Thank you for featuring Kohls items, I shop on line often and having the entire outfit linked is very helpful, I clicked right through each items and added them to my bag, used my promo code and earned Kohls cash – great completer cardigan and accessories – I really enjoy your blog and STYLE!!

  5. I love the slimmer cardigans like this.  I’ve been going through my closet and getting rid of the the chunky knits and replacing them with thinner ones.  I don’t need the bulk of a chunky knit to my frame, nor the heat. Love the color of this one.

  6. Thank you for including the Kohl’s items. I wait for my extra % card, and when I get 30%, I do some shopping. I also think their selection of workout wear is very good (and not too expensive.) I never think of “styling” jeans and a t-shirt – I think I just forget to add a completer piece/jewelry. Thanks for the reminder and ideas.

  7. I enjoy all of yours posts, but this is one of my favorites.  Why?  Because Larry and I have been a Kohl’s shopper for probably 20 years.  The only negative thing I have to say about Kohl’s is that the store closest to us is a smaller store.  I have that jacket in olive green.  I do need to get the Sonoma white tee to replace the see through ON white tee, since wearing a cami makes me too hot.  Since I really don’t need heavy jackets or coats, I am also going to get the cardigan, since that is also my preferred length.  Have a fabulous day!  PLEASE DON’T MAKE US WAIT TO SEE THE PROGRESS IN YOUR OFFICE!

  8. I love shopping at Kohl’s – thanks for the inspiring ideas. Kohl’s has so many options. Really like the Sonoma and Lauren Conrad brands. The sweater and jacket are so flattering! Love the jewellery too! Camo isn’t in my comfort zone but the utility jacket has other gorgeous color options that are perfect for fall.

Good luck with FWTWL program. Keep us posted! Are you doing any before and after pics?

      1. I admire you for putting yourself out there and sharing something that most would feel verrrry vulnerable doing!! You would have to bribe me big bucks to sharing any bathing suit or leotard or other revealing clothes in public or online. We are cheering you on with the FWTWL journey!👍 All the best!!

  9. This post is the epitome of my style, plus a huge part of my wardrobe is from Kohl’s. I love the cardigan and the camo jacket. You’re right about the color of the cardigan – I got a nail polish in pretty much the same color recently and for the same reason – it looks fallish with just a hint of pink.

  10. Love this post. So practical and fun to see 2 looks with the same basics, and, as always, you are THE BEST at explaining the “whys” of what makes an outfit work. I learn from all of your posts, but I’m more likely to shop Kohl’s than Nordstrom’s on my budget. Thanks, JoLynne, and MAKE IT a fabulous weekend!

  11. I love shopping at Kohls and own the utility jacket! It’s a great completer piece. These outfits suit my lifestyle on a daily basis. They are casual, while still being trendy and stylish too.  Love both looks! Thank you for featuring stylish and affordable looks from Kohl’s! I hope you will feature more outfits from Kohl’s in the future! Thank you for all the time and effort you put into your blog. I enjoy reading it everyday!

  12. Definitely ordering some of these items! I’ve been meaning to ask this question about jewelry. I know that with jewelry quality, you get what you pay for. Most of us are paying minimal amounts for “trendy” pieces. Some, however, are simple enough to make it through several seasons, even a couple of years. The problem is that my “gold” pieces tarnish so quickly that within a season (couple of weeks) I’m basically having to take it out of rotation because it’s no longer wearable. Is it just me and my body chemistry?? Or is this common and everyone just knows that their jewelry pieces are for short-term use? Thanks!

    1. Hey Lori, I’m not sure. I have seen that happen to some but very rarely to my gold pieces. Obviously I expect silver to tarnish so that has happened to some of my silver pieces, but my gold ones generally hold up well. I wonder if it does have something to do with the pH in the skin?

  13. LOVE this post! Outfits looks great, good tips and ideas how to take a couple of basics (that most of us probably already have) and make them fresh for fall’ , and selections from a store that’s accessible with reasonable prices. I like Nordstrom but seems like EVERY blogger styles them. Thanks for the practical but stylish inspiration!

  14. These slimming skinnies look fantastic on you. They are not as fitted as your usual ones but not loose like girlfriend friends. Just right! Ha!
I’m still waiting for the weather to be cool enough for the third piece. I love utility jackets. They go with so many different looks.
I’m dying to see what your light fixture is. I keep seeing all these beautiful big fixtures bloggers are installing and am dying to replace a couple of mine. My living room and dining room already have BIG ones, so it’s time for an update to the bedrooms and office. Bring on the pictures!

  15. Loved that you did a Kohl’s post. Thanks. However, it’ll probably be long about December before we here in Phoenix even think about layers. Always enjoy your post and your fashion sense. Enjoy your weekend.

  16. I love this post Jolynne! I enjoy shopping at Kohl’s because of the fabulous prices, sales and cash back, but I sometimes have trouble finding stylish options for myself. I ended up purchasing the sweater, jeans, shoulder bag and essential tee in black. I already own a white essential tee, and it is my favorite…super soft, perfect neckline for me, skims the body, holds its shape. Have a great, relaxing weekend!

  17. I really like this post, I’m a jeans and T-shirt kind of girl and these tips are just what I need to upgrade my “mom look” without it being too fussy.  Thanks for the inspiration!

  18. I like both outfits, and especially the utility jacket. Cute in camo, and so many pretty colors. I like the Heavy Lead one.
About sizing, can you zip up the jacket easily in a size Small? Is it comfortable (roomy enough) closed? I usually wear the same size as you.

  19. What length in the Levi’s did you buy? I always find it hard to pick a length that can be worn rolled with booties and unrolled with a flat. I am 5’3″, after a wash the shorts get too short, and the regulars stay too long, how do you feel about this with these Levi’s? Also, is the leg width more like a straight cut when not cuffed?

    1. Hey Chrissi, I have the 8. I would probably hem these, actually. I cuffed them to work with the booties, but I think they would look nicer if they were hemmed. I’m 5’5″ and I wear both 29″ and 28″ inseams, and both work pretty well with flats and booties, but the 28″ works better with booties unless the shaft is low. It isn’t uncommon to find 27″ inseams — look for cropped or short sizes. These come in short, and that is 28″ – I’m actually not sure why I didn’t order those, lol!

  20. I love both looks! I particularly love the rust colored cardigan and I don’t have anything in that color at home already! I may stop by Kohls on my way home today to check for the cardigan but also the camo utility jacket!! Thanks for featuring Kohls – they are closer to my budget!

  21. Love your posts and today’s really resonates with me – I’m so over the central Ohio 90 degree weather and ready to layer. I’ve already ordered the sweater; it’s such a great weight with such a smooth line. And, I’ve been a fan of the Sonoma tees for many years. I love the weight, the fit and price!

  22. I love the camo jacket but my daughter just brought one,so she’ll say I’m copying her. Lol
I am lucky to have a Kohl’s very near to my home and they have a good selection of petite clothes. I may have to grab that white T-shirt.

  23. Great post!
So I love that camo jacket! It’s really cute! And that taupe bag too!  I need some of the basics – and I have some time tomorrow, I need to head to Kohls!

  24. You look cute! I’m seeing camouflage everywhere. Fun!

The Kohl’s near me in CA is awful. The only reason I’ll go in there is to return Amazon packages. It smells weird inside and the clothes look cheaply made and things always look disorganized and messy.  But from reading your followers’ comments it certainly looks like you’ve struck gold for them as they all seem to like Kohl’s.
