Fall Fashion: Navy & Red Foulard Sheath

Fall Fashion: J.Crew Crimson Floulard Sheath

Hello, friends! It’s Day 15 of 26 Days of Fall Fashion, and believe it or not, I have another dress for you today! I fell in love with this navy and red foulard sheath the instant I put it on.

You know how I like a sheath, and the navy piping is so flattering. The fabric is nice and heavy and looks rich, plus it’s fully lined, which gives it great structure and makes it very forgiving. I don’t even need shapewear under this dress, although I did wear boy shorts with light control because I feel like they keep everything in check.

My only issue with this dress is that I don’t have navy blue shoes, and they really are the ideal pairing. On the website, the dress is pictured with these adorable navy pumps. Instead, I wore nude pumps and carried a black bag. I almost wore my black suede pumps, and maybe they would have looked better… I just couldn’t decide.

I could have ordered navy pumps, sure, but I know I wouldn’t wear them with much else, and so I decided to do the best I could with what I have in my closet. See, even fashion bloggers don’t always have the perfect accompaniment to every outfit!

This bag is a new addition. I wanted a plain black shoulder bag that is small enough to carry with dressier outfits but isn’t a clutch. This is the perfect size, and the black leather with glossy gold hardware is so classy. You pull that little ring to unsnap the clasp and release the flap, and then it’s open inside and large enough to hold all the essentials.

I’d have preferred to carry a lighter neutral closer to the color of the shoes with this outfit, but I don’t have something like that, and I figured you can never go wrong with a black bag.

Because the bag has gold hardware, I wore gold accessories. I didn’t want a necklace competing with the dress, so I wore large hoop earrings and a cuff bracelet. I like a cuff bracelet because it has the visual weight of stacked bracelets but you don’t have to put a set together.

As for where I’d wear this dress, it’s perfect for church or out to dinner, and you could certainly throw a blazer over top for the office. One reviewer even commented that she will wear it with a turtleneck underneath this winter.

Personally, I think this lightweight wool Jackie cardigan would be perfect over this, and when it gets colder, tights and boots would be fun with it… I am just not sure what color. I’d love to get your thoughts!

Just a few days ago, this dress was available in all sizes, but I see that some are selling out. If you like it, don’t wait too long! Unfortunately it is not on sale at the moment, but J.Crew is running a promotion for 25% off tees, sweaters, jackets and an extra 30% off sale styles with the code SHOPNOW. They always have great sweaters and jackets, so you may want to poke around and see what’s available.

So who has fun plans for the weekend? We didn’t end up going out last night. I was really tired for some reason, and not feeling up for it. I actually spent the evening on the couch watching Gilmore Girls. Everyone else was otherwise occupied, and it is so rare that I actually get the TV to myself that I decided to veg. It was kind of a shame to miss such a gorgeous evening. It was in the low 70s and sunny with a mild breeze, and I really should have been outside, but I couldn’t muster the energy. I guess sometimes a girl just needs a night on the couch.

We’re planning to shoot a few outfits this morning, and this afternoon I’m going to a movie with a friend. I’ve also been working on my family photo albums in iPhoto, and I’d like to get caught up. Every year I make a photo book, and I never finished the one for 2015, so yesterday I wrapped that up and got it ordered. My kids love looking through our photo books — especially R, my youngest. I can’t wait for it to come in.

I wanted to get 2016 started, but iPhoto kept locking up on me when I tried to create a new book. Does anyone else use iPhoto for photo books? Is it giving you fits? I hate how they’ve changed it, but it’s the easiest way for me to do our albums since my photos are all in that program already. Maybe I need to try something new. If you have any recommendations, let me know.

So yeah, that’s all the exciting news I have for you! Ha!

Be sure to visit Cyndi and see the fall outfit she’s styling today, and enjoy the rest of your weekend!

    1. Hi Jeri. Good idea… I keep meaning to do a post. Basically I just use a curling wand, and I always curl away from my face. I do it in 2 or 3 layers – I use a clip to hold the top layers up while I curl the bottom layers. Using hairspray before and after helps the curls hold. 🙂

  1. I love how you styled this outfit w nude pumps and a black bag; it looks great
And unexpected! I usually go for matchy matchy but I love this; thanks for the inspiration. Always look forward to your blog:)

    1. Yes, good point! I just rarely wear pumps at all so I figured I didn’t need navy when I have black and nude. But it could be fun to have something different to add to the mix. 🙂

  2. What a pretty dress! And I love the length! At 5’10”, it’s hard for me to find dresses that perfect length. Of course there are many more tall options than in years past, but often not in a dress like this. You will enjoy wearing it! Have a great weekend. Oh, yes, my daughter makes Shutterfly photo books of the grandchildren. I love it when she gives me one for Christmas! The one where she chronicled their trip to China to adopt our grandson is my favorite so far. 🙂

    1. I make those for my in-laws. 🙂 I use Shutterfly or Snapfish, I can’t remember which. I’ve always use the iPhoto for my family albums b/c my pix are automatically uploaded to that app and it’s easy, and they look nice. But I might try Shutterfly this year.

  3. I like the nude pumps, makes your legs look longer and makes the dress pop. Sometimes dark shoes on white legs makes the shoes stand out, and in an awkward way. You nailed it!

  4. You look great in this dress…and really thin!!! Great style for you. I have shorter legs than you, but I love wearing nude heels with dresses to elongate them. Have a great weekend

  5. Love this dress! And I love the nude heels and black bag to go with it! Looks great on you! Going to keep an eye on it to see if it goes on sale so I can order it!

Also, just wanted to share that while I was purging out my closet this week, I had a what I’d like to call a brilliant idea! I picked up my cell phone and took pics of each section in my closet so that when I went shopping, I had a full view of my tops, bottoms, sweaters, dresses, skirts, shoes and handbags to reference so I could match, replace or add items with confidence! This came to me because I was out shopping the week before and found a really cute cream cardigan thinking I could use one- of course I go home and in my closet I found two others!! Lesson learned!

  6. I love this dress! It’s very classy and looks great on you. Enjoy your weekend. We don’t usually do much, but tomorrow are taking our 17 year old daughter to the airport. She is going to Spain for 10 months as an exchange student. So, this will be an exciting and sad weekend all rolled into one.

  7. You look really nice in dresses Jo-Lynne, you should wear them more often. Lovely dress and you tied it altogether very nicely.
Keep up the fabulous job you do. Thank you for that.

  8. JoLynne, I have been following you and Cyndi for a long while now, & I had to comment on this dress, and outfit on you! I LOVE IT! You (both) have such beauty inside and out, and with this dress, the first thing that stood-out to me, other than the love of the red/blue (I’m soo conservative!) were the nude heel on you! I actually like it better than the navy heel shown on the model! I so enjoy reading your blog(s) each day! Thank you for such a lovely blog! By the way, I’m ordering it-just hope I can wear it as well as you! (Definitely with a sweater or blazer for me for Church/dinner/etc., so self-conscious in sleeveless dresses!!). Thank you!

  9. This dress looks so pretty on you! I think it’s one of my favorite outfits. The colors are beautiful and love the nude heels. I appreciate your modesty in the way you dress. That is hard to find these days! Your hair looks so pretty, also!

  10. You know I always love it when you wear a dress Jo-Lynne!! And the piping on this one is so interesting!
Even though they showed it with navy pumps, I love it with the nude. And since navy & black are sometimes mixed up…I bet black would look great too!! And here’s a twist—how about yelllow pumps? That would garnish some attention!!???
