Fall Fashion Trends: What’s In and What’s Out for 2023

The Nordstrom Anniversary Sale is over, but it clearly got us all in the mood for fall fashion because I keep getting questions about the latest fall fashion trends. Everyone always wants to know what’s in and what’s out, as we assess our closets and determine what stays and what goes and what we may want to add in preparation for the fall season.

Fall Fashion Trends: What’s IN For 2023

As always, I have to make this disclaimer when discussions fashion trends: Just because it’s trending doesn’t mean you have to wear it. Be selective with trends and incorporate them into your wardrobe only if they align with your personal style, body type, lifestyle, etc. At the end of the day, you should wear what you love, no matter what the “trend reports” say.

#1. Wide Leg Jeans

Wide leg jeans are not the only denim style we are seeing, but they are definitely the most fashion-forward denim style for fall 2023. All washes are trending, but medium and light-to-medium washes are the ones I’m seeing the most.

I feel like wide leg crop jeans are super easy to wear with sandals in the spring/summer, but as we head into fall, I think we will see more ankle-length and full-length styles. They pair well with clogs, chunky loafers, and booties, and you can also wear them with sneakers.

We will discuss more denim trends on Wednesday, but rest assured, if you aren’t a fan of wide leg jeans, most denim silhouettes are out there, and pretty much anything goes right now! I’m also a huge fan of bootcut and flare styles, and straight leg jeans are still relevant. Skinnies… not so much, but more on that in the What’s OUT for 2023 section below.

#2. Fitted Base Layers

Base layers like t-shirts, tank tops, camisoles, and fine gauge sweaters are a fall wardrobe essential, and I’m seeing more fitted styles and bodysuits this season. This is because no trend exists in a vacuum, and shorter, more fitted tops and bodysuits work well with high rise, wide leg jeans.

And because longer, boxier jackets are trending, wearing a more fitted base layer is the way to keep your looks polished and not sloppy. If you don’t like your clothing too tight or clingy, look for styles that skim the body and follow your natural shape without a body-con fit, or try sizing up.

#3. Button-Up Shirts

Button-up shirts are everywhere this year, and you’ll see lots of variety here, everything from the traditional to the oversized. There are collarless styles, cropped styles, some with a split neck, puff sleeves, and a tie-waist. They come in stripes, solids, prints, and mixed-media styles as well.

#4. Sleeveless Sweaters

I’m seeing lots of sweater vests and sweater tanks coming out right now, and this is one of my personal favorite 2023 fall fashion trends. In fact, I’ve already added a couple to my closet.

This is a nice wear now-and-later piece because they’re short-sleeved or sleeveless, with enough room to layer underneath when the weather cools down.

#5. Clogs & Wood Platform Soles

This trend isn’t new this season, but it’s still going strong because they pair so well with the wide leg jeans and flares that are trending. They’re also cute with denim skirts.

And if you have finicky feet, you can find comfortable styles that fit into this trend. I’m a huge fan of Kork-Ease clogs; they have a nicely padded footbed, and they’re quite stable.

#6. Chunky Earrings

I love a statement earring for fall/winter because long sleeves make it difficult to wear bracelets, and higher necklines aren’t always conducive to necklaces. The chunky earrings and puffy hoops that are trending are right up my alley! See some examples below, and we will discuss more accessory trends on Friday.

#7. Trousers

Relaxed trousers are actually taking over denim right now, at least judging by the influencers I follow. This is great news for those who need work wear!

I’m still a denim girl, but I’m going to “dip a toe” into this trend (pun totally intended) and see if I can pull it off for lunch dates with friends, things like that.

#8. Pointy Shoes

Pointed toe flats and kitten heels, especially slingback styles, are coming in big time this season.

#9. Boxy Blazers

One of the best things about fall fashion is all the layering possibilities, and having a variety of “outfit completer pieces” is the best way to keep your wardrobe interesting. Longer, boxy blazers are still going strong this fall, and I’m also seeing a lot of tweed and the shorter “lady jackets” popping up.

To keep it modern for 2023, wear blazers over fitted base layers, especially crew and mock neck styles. We’re also seeing more blazers with matching pants (or shorts) as suits this season.

#10. Ribbed Dresses

Ribbed dresses are having a moment this fall, and this can be a tricky silhouette to wear for those of us over a certain age, but I like them SO much better than all the ruffles and frills we’ve been seeing for the past few seasons. Let’s just say, Spanx is your friend!

#11. Denim Midi Skirts

Longer denim skirts have been on their way back in, both midi and maxi lengths, and we’re really seeing them hit the mainstream this year. I always know when a style I’ve had my eye on shows up at LOFT, it’s in the mainstream. The problem I’m having is finding a good one in stock. They all seem to sell out as soon as they pop up online. I was so happy to see quite a few in stock at Mango.

If you aren’t familiar, Mango is a European company (founded in Barcelona) with stores all over the world. I’ve ordered from them before, and they’re definitely legit. Returns are free for 30 days.

Final Thoughts on What’s IN for Fall 2022

There are definitely more 2023 fall fashion trends, but these are some of the most prominent ones so far. I will dive deeper into more shoe trends, color trends, denim trends, and accessory trends in subsequent posts.

Just remember, trends are just that. They come and go, and some stick around longer than others. If it’s not your style, just skip it. Not sure? Test it with something less expensive before you commit to a higher priced item. But if any of those trends feel like your style, you might want to lean into those a bit more over the next few months.

Fall Fashion Trends: What’s OUT For 2023

Just like “What’s IN for 2023”, these should be taken with a grain of salt. And, of course, where you are in the trend cycle will depend upon how fashion-forward it is where you live. I’m talking about what we are seeing in the mainstream everyday stores such as Evereve, LOFT, J.Crew, etc.

#1. low-rise legging jeans // This is probably the only denim silhouette that is considered “out” right now. Instead, we are seeing wide-leg pants, flares, and slim straight leg styles.

Yes, I KNOW we keep hearing rumblings that skinnies are already on their way back, but they are more of a slim straight with a mid-rise. They aren’t the low-rise legging ankle jeans of years past.

#2. lounge sets // I think it’s safe to say everyone is done with loungewear. We wore enough of it in 2020 and 2021 to last us a lifetime. Elevated athleisure is certainly fine for certain situations, but you will look more current in denim or trousers.

#3. animal prints // Animal prints are a classic style, and if you love them, you can certainly wear them in a modern way, but they are not trending at the moment.

#4. tunic tops // Tunic tops went the way of the skinny jean, probably because they pair so well. And the tunic top with leggings look we were all doing 5 years ago is out, too. This look wasn’t flattering on many of us, so I’m more than happy to bid this one adieu. A more modern alternative is a woven top  or v-neck cardigan with straight or wide leg jeans.

#5. Western-inspired // This is still around, and I did just purchase a pair of Western-inspired boots for fall, but this isn’t where the trends are headed. I wouldn’t advise investing in more of it unless it’s essential to your personal style.

#6. leather everything // A leather jacket is always a classic, but word on the street is that the leather dresses and tops and pants, basically leather everything that we were seeing for the past few seasons is on it’s way out. This doesn’t mean you can’t wear them if you bought them last year, but I wouldn’t invest in more right now.

#7. infinity scarves // These have been “out” for a long while, but I still get questions about them, so I wanted to include them here. A more updated look is the traditional oblong scarf as an outerwear accessory. If wearing scarves as an outfit accessory is essential to your personal style, go for a classic square style.

#8. long cardigans // Long cardigans aren’t fashion-forward right now, but sometimes they just make sense. Like any other classic style that isn’t exactly trending at the moment, if you love them, wear them with modern pieces. A more up to date style would be the shorter cardigans, worn buttoned-up or over a fitted base layer.

#9. shackets // Shackets are definitely on their way out, if they aren’t already. They were more of a fad than an actual trend, and they peaked quickly, which means they will usually decline just as quickly. A more modern alternative would be a blazer, or for casual wear, a cropped trucker jacket.

And that’s a wrap! I’d love to hear your thoughts.

Just remember that trends exist on a spectrum, and it’s totally okay to wear a variety of styles and phase them in and out of your closet as your budget allows. You don’t have to stop wearing any of the things on this list, and you may still see them in stores. I just wouldn’t recommend investing in more of these this season, unless it’s something that uniquely defines your personal style.

  1. I took your advice last year and didn’t invest in skinnier and bought straight, boot, close fitting flare and baggy flair…1 pair each. I’m now comfortable wearing them all. I had to try different shoes and tops to find what worked best for me. And while I don’t wear heels, I’m 5foot 6 and don’t need too much height. I do have some heeled booties and boots and wedge sandles for Summertime ( which is 9 months out of the year here). I attended my 11th Barbie Convention this Summer and thanks to your advice…I got so many compliments on my Fashion Forward outfits. Of course, wearing a lot of my favorite color PINK helped. Thanks so much for all you do.

  2. I like everything that’s on trend except oversized blazers. I have just about everything you listed. As far as leather and western boots being out I saw YouTube videos that say the opposite. There seems to be differences of opinion every year on the trends. In the stores and on line I see a lot of longer cardigans that end a few inches above the knee. Being petite I prefer the shorter cardigans. I just will wear what I like and suits me like you said.

  3. I love your blogs, and especially look forward to your seasonal “what’s in and what’s out blogs.” You really are informative and interesting. Please keep up your great job!😊

  4. Good for you putting your health first. I started running when I was 48 due to a life situation and that’s what kept me sane. Stopped in 2021 when I had covid and getting any energy back took months. Walking it is now.

  5. I’m happy to see the Shacket trend move on! It wasn’t all that flattering on anyone and get it to work for me i went from a S to an XXS as the style overwhelmed my petite frame.

I really love trousers though and wore them a lot as a post grad. I just can’t seem to fit them into my wardrobe anymore. Have become way too reliant on jeans! But I like your suggestion to add them in for dinners & events.

  6. Thanks for the informative post! If you want to share a link, H&M has several midi length denim skirts in stock. I bought one and it looks very nice for the price ($34.99). By the way, really enjoyed your chat on Jen’s podcast!

  7. Thanks Jo-Lynne! Looking forward to reading your fall posts this week (my fav time of the year, temp-wise and clothes-wise). Last year with your help I discovered the magical combination of 27″ straight jeans (w/ tiny bit of ankle showing) with vejas. I am hoping this combo still works for this upcoming fall? Thanks again!

  8. Great list! I’m just a little confused about western-inspired being out. I saw so many western style boots in the N-sale this year and see them everywhere in the stores. I was actually thinking they are hotter than ever this year. What am I missing?

  9. I haven’t heard of skinnies being on the verge of a comeback but low rise bootcuts are definitely on the horizon if you read Vogue. Buckle up! )

  10. It’s funny, but I saw western wear and shacket in the recent Nordstrom anniversary sale. I won’t be getting more but I’ll certainly feel just fine wearing these items yet this winter and next winter. Maybe forever but they are my style too.

  11. Thanks for helping keep us current, JoLynne. There are several trends I won’t be following (body con tops/ dresses due to a little extra fluff and no desire to wear Spanx, sling backs because they slip off my heels, wide leg jeans preferring straight or boot cut, clogs) but good to know. I agree with all the “Out”.

  12. Trying to catch up on your post. I’ve been sick with Covid the last 11 days and just trying to get my strength. I try to do anything and I have to sit down. I would be happy if I could just do my normal walk. Good for you setting a 5K goal. I’m the one who recommended the book to you. Hope you like it. Have a great week.

  13. This is a great list! I actually went into Mango for the first time in NYC at the end of July. I bought the denim skirt (it was on sale for $59). I thought it was a great way to try the trend without spending too much money. They did have some cute things!

  14. I love seeing this post! I’m learning to pick the trends I like and that work for me and give less space to those that are out for now. Thank you so much for doing all the research!

  15. Just thought I would let everyone know, I purchased that Mango midi skirt you showed at Macy’s about 3-4 months ago at $59.00, I’m not sure it’s the exact same one – the sizing was S, M or L (I’m a size 2 or 26) and the small fit with lots of room (both in the hips and waist), however this is not really a midi skirt, it’s more a maxi skirt – I’m 5’4″ and it hit the top of my shoes, ended up sending it back. But at the time they had plenty in stock (shipped to store within a week) not sure now if they are sold out or not. It is a really nice weight fabric and would definitely look great with boots

  16. I just clicked on the pic of the Mango skirt, it was the same one I ordered; however, Macy’s did not carry it in XS or XL – I’m sure XS would have fit great for me, but it still would have been too long, not sure if you have a Macy’s link but the price there is still $59 and if you have rewards, it would be a great buy

  17. Oh no! I bought Veronica Beard leather pants and the matching leather blazer at the NSale. I plan to wear them as separates, not together. I’m disappointed that you’re saying they are falling out of style. I haven’t even worn them yet! 😞

  18. I always love these posts for each season! I think I’ll try button ups, and maybe a sweater vest this year. I’ll skip the wide leg trend; I’m in love with my bootcuts and straight legs and sticking my closet with those! I agree that certain iterations of western are out. The little house on the prairie, ditsy prints, ruffles, flounces, barn wear looks – they have got to go. I do think classic iterations of western will continue to have a place in fashion. The clean cut, subtle western touches to boots, denim, and some outerwear will always be around. Western is part of my style, I just wear it a bit more modern and understated. No matter what your style, quality and fit is key – so I think people should wear what they love and try a trend here and there to stay current. Can’t wait to see the upcoming posts this week!!

  19. Thanks for another great post Jo-Lynne, I’ve just bought my first pair of wide leg chewed hem jeans after seeing how much you love yours & wish I’d bought them sooner!
Good luck with your running & Pilates – sadly I’ve had to stop running but my Pilates class I couldn’t live without!

  20. Good news…shackets out..they are glorified flannel shirts. I do have to say the “what’s in” list was a bit depressing for me. I am 5’4″ and a size 12 so I am not skinny and all these styles flatter thinner women. I really don’t like the wide leg pants and fiited top/dresses. The good news is it looks like I will be spending very little on my wardrobe this year!

  21. What would wearing long cardigans “with modern pieces” look like? I had figured I’d keep a couple to wear around the house with joggers but wouldn’t be wearing them out places.

  22. Me reading the what’s in section: okay cool, I can do most of these
Me reading the what’s out section: oh look, a graveyard of all my favorite pieces 😬

  23. Is the long collarless sweater jacket from JCrew kind of out for fall 23 then? It’s called the Juliet. I bought it pre pandemic and it still has tags.
