Fall Outfit Formula: Grey on Grey

Happy Monday, friends! I hope you’re still enjoying a long weekend, and those of you waiting out Hurricane Dorian are taking all necessary precautions to stay safe.

I’m super excited to get back to posting more outfits this month. I was feeling rather burned out and uninspired during August — just wanting to eke out every last bit of summer and not at all ready to think about fall fashion.

While our weather is still quite warm, having the kids back in school and getting into our fall routine is motivating me to start putting together and sharing fall outfits.

This look is more of an outfit formula. There isn’t really a hero piece here, but I love how it all works together.

I shopped my closet, so much of what I’m wearing has sold out, but I can link to similar styles for all of these pieces.

I actually got inspired to put this outfit together when I saw this grey sweater hanging next to these grey jeans. I don’t normally think of putting grey and grey together, but monochromatic looks are trending this fall, so I decided to keep everything in the same color family.

I could have gone light or dark with my base layer, and I opted for dark (obvi).

White gives the look more airy, summer vibe.

Adding another shade of grey works, but it’s a little dull.

So I went with a black tank and repeated the black with my bag, which I think helps keep the black top from looking too stark against the softer tones in the rest of the outfit.

I have a black tee I almost wore, but then I decided to level up a bit and wear this mixed jersey tank.

This is such a nice base layer to have in your closet, and it’s a nice alternative to a cami because it’s regular bra-friendly. I actually have it in both black and white. (The white is more of an ivory.) Also, it’s 40% off right now.

The grey cardigan is from the #NSale, and it’s one of the pieces that wasn’t restocked, but this open front pocket cardigan comes in a similar shade of grey.

I’ve tried it and can attest to the good fit and quality. It’s a thinner knit, much like the one I’m wearing here, so great for transition weather.

My jeans are also old and sizes are depleted, but grey jeans aren’t hard to find. I do prefer a darker grey wash to the lighter ones. I’ve tried a bunch, and for some reason, the darker wash seems to be more flattering.

Likewise with the python/snake print booties. These sold out quickly during the #NSale, but there are sooo many options available right now. I’ll link up a few at the bottom of this post. Black is also an option if you’re not a fan of snake print.

This snake embossed leather shopper is definitely a splurge, but I think I’m going to get a lot of use out of it this fall and winter, and I like how it’s different from most other bags I’m seeing right now. If you’ve had your eye on it, it’s currently 50% off.

I accessorized with this mixed metal coin collar necklace. The hammered metal is a little more rugged than shinier styles, and it works well with this overall look.

I kept my earrings to small ball studs, and there was no need for a bracelet since my sweater sleeves are so long.

  1. Awesome post!  My favorite combo is with the black top.
At first I was shaking my head no to the snake print boots, but they are growing on me!  This post helped. Have a great day!

  2. I love monochromatic looks and so I’m glad to hear they’re trending this fall. I have all the elements of your
outfit in my closet, minus the snakeskin booties which I’m opting out of that trend. But I do have other booties that will work. Have a wonderful Labor Day Jo-Lynne!

  3. Of course, another great outfit idea!  This is one I may save for after I’m done wearing my fall colors. I love that necklace, it really makes the outfit pop!  There won’t be snakeskin print ANYTHING in my wardrobe, as I am NOT a big fan of them!  We seem to have a resident one around our garage that likes to leave his shed skin inside, as his calling card!  Totally creeps me out. It’s rainy & humid here, so glad we got our family picnic in yesterday, as it’s an R & R day today!  Enjoy your day!

    1. Same here. Listening to thunder right now… our party was fun last night. The kids all swam, despite the cooler than normal temps. A good time had by all. 🙂 Glad yours went well too!

  4. Great outfit!   Thank you for showing the options.  You saved me from doing the try-ons myself! 😉
I also have the mixed Jersey tank in 2 colors thanks to your recommendation from a previous post.   They are getting so much wear!!!!   I even wear them alone!   Very versatile!

  5. Great outfit formula.  I love the look of  monochromatic dressing and may copy this outfit since I have all the elements… once the python booties I just ordered get Here!   Could you do this look with a colour like red or would that be too much. I am thinking I would look like a fire truck and should keep my fav colour to accent only.

  6. Such a great look, love that cardigan! I finally have a pair of gray jeans (picked them up from a clearance rack) but I may want to look for another pair, these look fantastic on you!!

  7. You look so nice in this outfit.  And it’s an outfit I really like and can create with pieces in my closet.  I got my containers of fall clothes out of the attic yesterday.  I plan on starting to pack up my summer things today and pulling out pieces to donate at the same time., even though we will have highs in the 90’s then most of September.  Yuck!!  There are 12 coastal counties in GA that will be under a mandatory evacuation as of Noon today, and it will remain in effect until 9/9.  I know that one of the ladies in this group lives in Savannah, so she and her family will have to evacuate.  Still praying for everyone in Dorians path.  Enjoy your day!

  8. I loooove those snake skin booties, but they are a little too tall for me…  I’ll be looking for some lower ones.  😉

  9. Thanks for showing this combo. I can recreate it from my closet, minus the boots, which I cannot get into. I have seen a few snakeskin belts I might try just to participate in the trend.

  10. I like the grey top with your outfit, as well. I wouldn’t call it dull, just quiet. I guess I like groutfit dressing ( thanks for the link).
I think you’re going to get a lot of wear from your snakeskin booties. I’m not sure if I would like them on myself, so I’m going to try a pair on. If I don’t say EEK! I’ll buy them.

  11. I love this look!  I finally found a pair of grey skinny jeans and wore them cuffed/cropped for the summer with sandals and now I’m looking forward to wearing them down, with my slip on sneakers in the fall, and with boots in the winter.  I would love to find a grey cardigan to replicate your monochromatic look!  I also went back and reread and pinned your “Five Ways To Wear Grey Jeans” post.  Very helpful!

  12. I LOVE this as my favorite of all time! I have been looking for a gray pair of jeans for awhile now but do not want skinny jeans. I have anxiety issues and I feel to constricted in them. 😢 Thank you so much for this post. Now I know when I do get them how to style them. You look great in all the looks by the way. 😀  Enjoy the last day of the Labor Day weekend!

  13. Loved this look. I too can shop in my closet for everything but the gray pants. I have gray but not jeans and jeans is what you need for this look. I have that gray knit cardigan and wear it ALL the time out to dinner or in church with the blasting AC. It really is a neutral.
The purse is definitely a splurge but to me it looks way too big for you…you are tiny. Maybe if you are traveling and can put stuff in it? I had to laugh at the red outfit you shared the link on – that was a lot of red! I think she was in NYC, which worked for her. Looking forward to the styling it 5 ways on whatever you choose to do.

    1. I like big bags and I cannot lie… haha! I know it’s big, and I almost returned it for being too big, but I do love a big, slouchy bag for some reason.☺️

Yeah, Helena is in NYC and can get away with that look there. I don’t think it would go over well in my suburban/country life here in PA.

  14. Hi Jo-Lynne, I like the dark monochromatic look but the white t-shirt outfit is my favourite. The white looks awesome with the necklace and sweater.
