Fall Outfit: Mixed Media Top + Skinny Jeans + Ankle Boots

For some reason, these pictures look like I used a Sepia filter. I don’t know what is up with that. This top came in my last Stitch Fix. Y’all know I love this color. In fact, my closet is overrun with burgundy this fall. I immediately liked how this top has some styling elements of a blouse with the comfort of a knit top.

I could easily wear this with grey or black, but this time I styled the top with dark skinny jeans and my taupe booties. These are my favorite jeans to dress up because of the dark, even wash. These have a fabulous fit, and I’ve had them for going on 5 years now, and they don’t stretch out or fade. I always wash my jeans in cold water and hang them to dry.

With ankle boots and skinny jeans, the questions is always “to tuck, or not to tuck…” In this case, I left my jeans untucked, and I cuffed them so they stop just above the top of the boot. I usually try it both ways and decide which looks better on a case-by-case basis. Every bootie and every pair of jeans is slightly different, so you really have to play around with it.

My natural inclination with a top like this is to wear a necklace that fills in the neckline, but I decided to try it with this tassel necklace instead. This is a great piece to have. It goes with so much and always makes a great statement.

Here’s a view of the back of the top. I love it when a blouse has a stretchy material on the back. I usually stay away from blouses because I find them uncomfortable, so this is a great solution.

The sleeves of the top have a slight bell shape to them, which is fun. But they also have tabs and buttons so you can roll them up and they look finished. Here you can see the bell shape.

And this is one with the arms rolled.

The ring is by Chloe & Isabel. A statement ring is a fun accessory trend that I haven’t really utilized much, and even this has been sitting in my jewelry box for months because I never seem to know what to wear it with. When I was styling this outfit, it jumped out at me, and I put it on and loved it. I’d wear this if I was going out to lunch with a friend or on a dinner date with my hubby. It’s definitely not “daily mom style” but it’s fun for dressing up a casual outfit for dinner.

I’m holding a clutch in this picture because I tried the outfit with my black clutch and leopard flats, but then I decided I liked it better dressed down with the booties and the snakeskin tote. I think I should have kept the sleeves rolled though.

True confessions: I actually sent this top back after taking these pictures. It’s cute, but I don’t need another shirt in this color, and it doesn’t fit me as well as other tops I have. I also don’t love how the sleeves and back are a slightly different tone than the front. While I love the idea of mixing materials in a shirt like this, I prefer the colors to match up better.

Still, it’s a cute outfit and I wanted to go ahead and share it with you! Maybe it will inspire you to put a new outfit together with pieces you have in your closet.

  1. I’m glad you said the sleeves didn’t match the rest of the shirt, that was distracting me in each picture!

  2. What a great outfit! But, you’re right about the shirt. I was distracted by the sleeves, too, and I think that would have bugged me. I’m glad you mentioned the cuff issue with the jeans/booties. Just got my first pair of booties and now am unsure how to wear them…can I wear black booties with gray denim? Colored denim? I need to check out those WHBM leggings you mentioned the other day.

    1. I think black with grey or colored should work. But it could be too stark – you have to try and see, I guess. it also can depend on the top. If the top is dark, they will look better.

  3. I didn’t notice the sleeves being different colors until you pointed it out. 🙂 But I know what you mean about mixed media. I bought a mixed media top from Loft and I’m not that happy with it. The different materials shrank and faded differently in the wash so now it looks like I have two different tops stuck together.

  4. You look great. What’s the name of that top? I liked it enough to want to ask my Stitch Fix stylist to try to fin fit for me!

    1. I don’t have the paper anymore. 🙁 If you pin it to your board – assuming you have one she has on file? – she might send it to you. That’s what happened with my stripe and chambray shirt. I had pinned it and she saw it and sent me one. 🙂

  5. I so agree with you on the mismatch of the colors! If they had been really different then it would have looked much better. They were too close that I kept wondering if maybe the camera photographed them weirdly.

  6. Love this outfit! I actually just bought a top similar to this style yesterday in burgundy. I have also been looking for those shoes, where did you find them?
I absolutely love your style and am enjoying your blog!!
