Fall Outfit: Plaid + Khaki

Last Saturday my husband and I wandered over to a nearby farm to get these photos. I love that he’s taking an interest in photography. It sure does make my life easier!

You may remember this shirt. It’s from Stitch Fix. I wore it first with jeans and a white tank and those fabulous embellished red t-strap flats. You can see that post here. This time I wanted to wear it with my beige moto jeans. Rather than buttoning it up, I wore it unbuttoned over a navy tank this time.

I love that blue lapis ring, and I love the blue lapis necklace — both from my Stella & Dot shop — but I’m not sure I like them together. It almost seems like too much. What do you think? I think next time I might just wear the chevron necklace and call it a day.

Here’s a view from the side. I love the contrasting plaid lining and the button-up sleeves.

I wore my Frye riding boots. The seemed like the obvious choice. LOVE these boots. One of my best wardrobe investments ever.

My husband was having fun playing around with HDR for this shot.

Here’s one last picture of the outfit. The tote is old, but I linked to a similar one below. It’s another classic that I’ve had for ages, and I don’t see myself parting with it anytime soon.

  1. I really love this. It’s a great casual look but still completely put together with those fab boots and accessories. I actually like all the jewelry together too.

  2. You look perfect for the activity. Cozy and comforable. I like the lapis color, but tend to wear silver exclusively for my skin tone. I don’t think it’s over done, but I do tend to down play the jewelry when dressed casual. Maybe I need to spruce up at all times. Too, really like the knakis-stylish and cute. Lastly, the boots look warm and comforatble. I have a pair of stiff Frye boots, that just sit in my closet-any suggestions? Thanks for your posts and coffee chats!!!

    1. I kind of like the juxtaposition of a great piece of jewelry with a casual outfit, but I think in this case, I overdid it. 🙂 I usually err on the side of less is more, and now I know why! Ha! Live and learn, right? That’s why taking pictures is so helpful. You really see an outfit differently when you photograph it.

Why do your Frye boots just sit in your closet? That is a crime! What kind are they? 🙂 Maybe I can give you some ideas.

    2. Thank you for your feedback! They are the Frye Cavalry boots, in black. They seem heavy and stiff, and wouldn’t be good in the snow of course. I live in Ohio now. Maybe a good heavy sock would work with them? Not sure what to wear with them, other than ripped jeans. They really need to be broken in…I like to travel too, so not so travel friendly, as they are heavy. I just pulled them out to look at them, as they were in a completely other closet. I do tend to buy clothes and not wear them…I’m a work in process. I’m transitioning into my 50s and dressing seems to be a challenging.

      1. I hear ya, every 5 years, I feel like I have to re-evaluate my wardrobe and my style.

My friend has those boots, and she wears them with tons of things! She just wears them like regular black boots – with jeans and sweaters or cute tops. Don’t overthink it. They’re very versatile!

        1. Ok, took your advice. I wore the camper style (actually) Frye boots with a dress today. My husband complemented me today, which is rare. Thanks!

  3. Hi Jo-Lynne! I just found your blog recently when I googled “how to wear ankle boots for women over 50”. Now I am a subscriber!! Thanks much for your posts. I am learning a lot and love your style! Just bought my first pair of ankle boots this week – now that I know how to wear them!
