17 Outfits for 2017

I was thinking the other day that I should recreate some of my fall outfits from last year because they’re still perfectly relevant and in style, and I have a lot of those clothing items still hanging in my closet. Then I realized it made no sense to reinvent the wheel, so I just gathered a bunch of my favorite outfits from last fall here in one post, and voila! 17 “new” fall outfits to copy or adapt with what you have in your closet!

17 fall outfits to copy right now with product links

You can probably shop your closet to recreate many of these outfits, but I’ve also provided links to what I can or at least to some general product categories to give you a place to start.

#1. Stripe Turtleneck, Black Quilted Vest, Black Jeans, Fashion Sneakers

There are so many possible variations on this outfit, but I kind of like the black and white for a more sophisticated take on the quilted jacket. The burgundy bag is the perfect rich fall color to compliment the look.

#2. Black Moto Jacket, Burgundy Skinnies, Black OTK Boots, Grey Scarf

This is one of my all time favorite outfits.

black moto jacket // burgundy skinnies // black OTK boots // grey scarves // black tee // black bag options // faux pearl studs

#3. Green Quilted Vest, Stripe Tee, Blue Jeans, Leopard Flats

I love this green vest, but you could wear navy or red or even pink and this outfit would still work. It’s the leopard flats that really make it pop.

#4. Yellow Cardigan, Leopard Scarf, White Tee, Blue Jeans, Brown Ankle Boots

Any style of blue jeans works for this look, but bootcut jeans are making a comeback for 2018!

#5. Burgundy Skinnies, Grey (or Black) Rain Boots, Black Moto Jacket, Grey Tee & Grey Leopard Scarf

This post is a couple years old, but I still love this outfit. My moto jacket is coated cotton, but I don’t think I’d wear leather in the rain. Of course you can wear leather or suede boots instead of rain boots.

#6. Plaid Flannel, White Tee, Blue Jeans, Converse

Any plaid button down shirt will work for this outfit formula. If it’s warm enough, you can take it off and tie it around your waist.

#7. Burgundy Jeans, Black Tee, Denim Jacket, Black Loafers

Any color denim would work with this look, and you can definitely sub straight leg jeans or bootcut if you prefer.

#8. Black Jeans, Grey Tee, Black Moto Jacket & Leopard Flats

This outfit is really simple, but the leopard flats pop it.

#9. Black Leggings, Colored Tunic, Tall Brown Boots

This tunic comes in a bunch of colors, and it’s only $27. It also looks good front-tucked with skinny jeans.

#10. White Jeans, Pink Tee, Grey Cardigan, Grey Ankle Boots

Pastels aren’t just for summertime!

#11. Striped Tee, Olive Cargo Skinnies, Denim Jacket & Leopard Flats

How old is this picture!?! LOL! It still works, tho.

#12. Camel Sweater, Black Quilted Vest, Blue Jeans, Burgundy Flats, Plaid Scarf

This is another one of my all-time favorite looks. I knotted this long scarf to look more like an infinity scarf.

#13. Orange Pullover, Light Wash Jeans, Leopard Booties, Yellow Tote

This combination of colors just screams fall!

#14. Leopard Scarf, Beige Tee, Black Jeans, Taupe Ankle Boots

Wearing a short sleeve tee with a scarf is kind of silly if you think about it, but this scarf is perfect because you can wrap up in it if you get cold indoors.

#15. Camel Sweater, White Skinny Jeans, Tall Brown Boots, Plaid Scarf

This camel sweater is a workhorse in my fall and winter wardrobe. It’s such a great layering piece. See more of this look in the original post.

#16. Swing Dress with OTK Boots

I love OTK boots paired with a shift or swing dress, and Loft has a couple of cute swing sweater dresses out this fall that would be perfect for this look.

#17. Red Vest, Cream Turtleneck, Blue Jeans, Hunter Boots, Plaid Scarf

This popular scarf was brought back this year, so I had to share this outfit again.

I hope that was helpful! It was for me. I totally forgot about some of those outfits until I started going through my archives, and I can’t wait to start recreating some of these now that the weather feels like fall.

  1. Yes! These are all perfect for recreating and so convenient to have them all rounded up here. I will most definitely snatch up that camel sweater if it goes on sale again this year. The look with the black vest is probably one of my all time favorites from you too. Actually, most of my favorites involve a puffer vest, lol. I guess that explains why I have 5 of them!!

  2. So many amazing fall looks, #2 and #12 are my favs.  Your first paragraph explained the dilemma of most fashion bloggers.  I want to show new clothes on my blog, but when my closet is already full of clothes that are still trending I don’t need to buy anything new.

  3. So many great looks here!  The thing that really stood out to me is how much that third item (vest, jacket, or at least a scarf) really ups the looks of the outfit.  It takes it from looking ordinary to looking very put together and sophisticated.  Thanks for the ideas

  4. Nice post and it is fun to look back at these styles and realize that they are all still relevant! Fun to mix and match different color combos and these styles serve as great inspiration. Thanks for the post and Happy Friday! I wish I could rock the stripes and leopard combo and I know leopard is a neutral but I just am not feeling it everytime I try! Anyone else??

    1. I’m with you…I struggle pairing the two. It seems to look cute on other people but I feel like when I attempt it, it’s wrong. Maybe the size of the stripe makes a difference?

  5. Love the outfits!!! So many awesome ideas!!! Great idea to place in one post!! Easy peasy to refervback to!!! Had to pull out the sweaters today!!! It’s snowing here in Minnesota!! 2-4 inches by the end of the day!! It’s back!!! Thanks again for the great outfit ideas, I will be borrowing them for sure!!!!

    1. I’m in Rochester….and snowing here too. I wore a heavy sweater, my winter coat, scarf and gloves to work lol.

  6. #4 has been a staple in my wardrobe since you first posted it!! Love all the outfits you put together, Jo-Lynne!!

  7. Great post. I’m not sure it feels like fall. The 36 degree temps and frost sure felt like winter on the walk to school this morning. Maybe by afternoon, lol.

  8. Awesome ideas! I have debated on leopard, but it looks good with so many things. I especially love the look with the mustard cardigan. Ahhh Shopping list getting longer………. 🙂

  9. Jo-Lynne,Quick question about the J. Crew & Factory vests… is there a big difference in the quality? For instance is the fabric of the Factory vest thinner or different?
    Thanks!

    1. Hey Cyndi. So yeah, the Factory one isn’t as “puffy” but you don’t really notice that till you feel them both. The filling is 100% polyester whereas the J.Crew one is mostly down. So there is a difference in quality, but I don’t think it’s super noticeable.

  10. This was a fantastic post! I loved getting a “refresher course” on great fall outfits. I have most of your posts saved as inspiration on Pinterest, so I was glad to find that you still gravitate towards looks from a year or more ago. The second look from this post is my all time favorite and the look I choose if I am feeling a little uncertain about what to wear or in a hurry and have to pull together an outfit.
Hope you have a lovely weekend!

  11. I love this post   – I have to remind myself to go through my closet and mix/match in new ways rather than always thinking I have to go out and buy a new outfit.  There is great inspiration in these photos of classic looks with a trendy item added to update for the current season.  I’m ready to go “shopping” in my closet right now!  Thanks Jo-Lynne!

  12. Jo-Lynne, thanks so much for sharing these super cute outfits. Can’t wait to see what’s in my closet to recreate some of these. Have a wonderful weekend!

  13. I love all the outfits you posted and have many of the items in my closet to put them together (thanks to you).  You really are my favorite blogger and I appreciate all the time and effort you put in to your posts every day.

  14. OUtfits 2 and 9 are sassy! love them! Outfit 6 with the flannel I just love for my thrifting/farmers market days. 🙂 I don’t know what I did before I found your blog. 🙂 You’re super helpful to keep me in the loop!

    Happy Friday,
    -Marie

  15. A great roundup of fall style. It proves that we don’t have to keep shopping every year to stay current. Add a bit of plaid to your wardrobe this year and you’re set.

  16. Thanks for all the ideas to create more outfits to wear , I love all of them , I hope your dry socket is healing and you can put it all behind you . Have a great weekend !!!

  17. Love this post! So many great looks. I think I love all of them! One question- how do you wash and dry your Converse Shorelines?
Hope your appointment goes well today and you’re on the mend. Have a wonderful weekend!

  18. What a great roundup of outfits!  Since following your blog,  I’ve added several of the basic pieces to my wardrobe.  But the one that eludes me, is the navy/white stripped long sleeved tee.  I ordered the one you styled; however, even in the XL, the sleeves were way too tight around the top of my arms.  Either I needs some lipo there or i need to keep searching!  I’m surprised how hard it is to find a basic color like that.  Prayers for Paul to make it home in time.  I remember the senior year of both our daughters and all the great ‘one last time” activities there were.  My, how the years fly by.  Now it’s grandchildren activities!

  19. Thanks for such great ideas!  I have plenty of clothes, but sometimes I have trouble putting outfits together. I love your blog and look forward to reading it every day.

  20. Love this post!  Its such a great reference for putting outfits together.  Makes shopping my closet much easier and fun!  I truly look forward to your daily post and find them so helpful because you are so detailed with how/why you put outfits together. Hope your mouth is feeling better and you enjoy your weekend!

  21. Wonderful post! Fun to browse through. I think our California weather may start edging towards fall-ish temps. Been 80’s and 90’s this week. My favorites are #2, #4 and #9. Thanks so much Jo-Lynne!

  22. So many great ideas with things we have in our closet. I loved the burgundy flats so much when you first styled them that I ordered some from DSW. I got a pair of EuroSoft which was more affordable for me. Just $45. Can’t wait to get them. I think I will wear them so much. Enjoy your weekend. I sure hope your husband makes it in time for game.

  23. I love #2- soooo cute and a little edgy!

Question: today I bought a pair of TB Minnie flats in the tan/caramel color with the gold medallion. I need styling tips: what do I wear them with? I almost bought the black, but the brown looked better; they looked great as a matter of fact! ???? But the dilemma is how to wear them!

    1. Oh, congrats! I know you’ve been debating those for a while. I love that combo, but I can’t seem to pull the trigger. (Who am I kidding, I want a pair in every color!) So really, brown goes with just about everything. I follow this girl on Insta and she often wears them or puts them in flat lays, of course now that I scroll her feed, I don’t see many. But pair them with any neutral sweater/jeans combo. Ivory, navy, olive – anything that compliments cognac.

This is a simple stripe tee and jeans with them – https://www.instagram.com/p/BZka52YFl-r/?taken-by=mrscasual

Wear them with olive green (they’re great with a utility jacket) – https://www.instagram.com/p/BYhIZ03gqgr/?taken-by=mrscasual

I’m assuming since you’re a teacher, you don’t wear jeans much (although these days… do teachers wear jeans? LOL!) But if you have olive utility pants, they’ll go with those and pretty much any top. The go with navy pants, and honestly, with black if you pull in brown somewhere else in the outfit – like a leopard scarf. Does that help?

      1. Thank you JoLynne!! The pics you attached are great. I’m going to wear them tomorrow with my olive skinnies and a striped 3/4 sleeved tee similar to the one in the picture. I might even get to throw on my denim jacket in the morning as our weather is supposed to cool down today and be in the low 70s…SO excited!
I did a Pinterest search and saw them paired with black skinnies (like you suggested) and black skirts too and I love the look!

I might have to save for a second pair in black or the burgundy that you wear often because they are  so cute and honestly the most comfortable flats I’ve ever put on. The real test will be after a whole day of teaching tomorrow. ????????

Thanks my internet friend! Have a great Sunday!

  24. Great post, love it! So much inspiration for ways to mix and match all those basic pieces in my closet. Thank you!

  25. Quick question. How about the sizing on your Adidas Superstars? I’m hesitant to order because of conflicting reviews. Did you have to go down a 1/2 size or are they true to size? Thanks!

  26. I like these “oldies but goodies!” Lots of ideas to choose from.
We got our first cold snap this weekend. It’s finally time to start dressing for fall.

  27. Great….great looks.  You are so beautiful.   I bet it helped you too to go back and look at past post.  Gives you ideas to wear again without buying all new.  Gave me some good ideas of things I have in my closet.  I hope scarves NEVER go out.  I love a good scarf.  Great accessory and keeps me so much warmer.

  28. #4 is my favorite. The pairing of the leopard print scarf and yellow sweater looks absolutely amazing! Jo-Lynne, thanks for sharing all of these outfits to get us through the remaining days of fall.

  29. I have pieces I could use to recreate almost all of these looks. #toomanyclothes. Haha. Going to wear some of these this fall! Thanks for the inspiration!
