Fall Trends to Try: Plaid Pumps Now & Later

Happy Friday, friends! Cyndi and I are teaming up again to style a fall trend for now and later, and this week we’re both styling plaid.

Plaid is a fall classic, yes, but it’s also being touted as one of the top trends this season. Think less school-uniform and more working-woman with tailored silhouettes and polished touches.

It is with some fear and trepidation that I hit Publish on this post, because I know I’m going to get some hate mail for it. 😂

Why, you may wonder? Well, just about everything I’m wearing is selling out.

But never fear! Both of these outfits can easily be recreated with similar pieces, so I’ve found some other options for everything that is low inventory.

I picked up these plaid pumps during the #NSale, and I love how they dress up a pair of jeans.

With this blend of autumnal colors, they seem to go with just about everything I put on these days. I’ve been surprised by how versatile a print can be.

Unfortunately the plaid is almost gone, but these shoes are very comfortable and have a gorgeous shape. If you’re in need of a classic pair of pumps, take a look at the other color options — there are some good ones!

For this first look, I wore my plaid pumps with dark wash jeans and a sleeveless top in a gorgeous shade of brown they call cognac.

This top comes in a bunch of solids, as well as snake and leopard prints. As luck may have it, it’s almost sold out in the cognac, but it’s still available in most other options. For size reference, I’m wearing the small.

These jeans are my trusty Rag & Bone Cate skinnies, and I love the wash on them as well as the raw hem.

There are a few sizes left at Bloomies, or you can find a very similar pair on sale at Nordstrom. They run TTS, or size down if in between. I take a 28 in these.

I accessorized with double hoop earrings (similar) and a cuff bracelet, and I carried my taupe Everlane tote.

To carry plaid pumps into fall and winter, all you have to do is swap out the sleeveless top for a chunky sweater, like this Chelsea28 cowlneck number.

I actually shot this look back in July, but I never posted the entire outfit because everything sold out so fast.

This sweater has been restocked, and it’s also available in charcoal grey. This is just an example of the type of sweater I’d wear with jeans and plaid pumps.

I linked a bunch of other options below, and of course you don’t have to wear off-white either. Any shade of rust, burgundy, taupe, camel, or beige looks great with these pumps.

I love the chewed hem on these Frame skinnies. I know they’re not for everyone, but I think they add a fun texture to the look and toughen it up a bit.

Dark wash jeans seem to be my to-to with these shoes, but you could certainly wear them with pants for work, and I also styled them with a dress on Monday.

I think it’s fun to mix chunky knits with pumps for going out to dinner or for a get together with girlfriends, but you could totally do this look with flats — plaid loafers or mules would be super cute with this outfit too.

  1. These shoes are beautiful, Jo-Lynne. Sadly, as a mum of three little ones, doing the school run each AM, they are not for me. But I am going to see if I can find a pair of plaid trainers. I love this idea – I like plaid, but I find scarves too fussy and warm at times, and I don’t want a plaid bag, so shoes is a good way to try this trend.

    1. Plaid trainers are a great idea! I’m on my feet all day as a teacher, and I do not wear pumps to school…I stay pretty casual, but I LOVE this idea.

And no hate from me either! I love the Frame jeans with the chewed hem, but I would need to shorten them, and I’m pretty sure I couldn’t replicate the chewed hem. I’ve definitely just cut a hem (one of the reason I love the raw hem trend), but this seems different, and it really is a cool look.

      1. I’d like to see some plaid options in flats, too. I no longer wear heels. Plaid footwear is a trend I’d like to jump on.

    2. Those plaid pumps also came in a flat and were in the NSale. I’ve no clue if they’re available now though. I got a pair and they are comfortable!

  2. I bought the R&B Cate skinnies from shopbop & they r AMAZING!!!  Wearing out tonight.  Thank u for finding them & sharing!!  They not only  look great, they r super comfortable & breath nicely.  R&B have quickly become my very favorite jeans.

  3. I wanted those pumps so bad when they were part of the N sale….they are definitely a hot ticket because of course they were sold out of my size. I scoured the internet for something similar with those colors but I couldn’t find anything. If I ever see them again I’m getting them, I don’t care the cost lol.

  4. I really like the style and color of the sleeveless top and the plaid shoes are great!  You are definitely getting your moneys worth out of them already.  I could see me adding a pair of plaid mules to my closet.  I hope y’all have a great weekend!  It’s going to be a hot one down here, again.  🥵 🤪

  5. Love the plaid pumps with the sleeveless tank as we are still pretty warm in South Texas but our temps are finally starting to drop a bit.

  6. Hi Jo-Lynne,
I just found your work and I do love learning and searching out the outfits that you post, my one wish is that I could find the items or similar items in a Canadian store, or Canadian online shopping. Exchange makes it a bit more expensive from American to Canadian. So should you have time I wonder if you could recommend some Canadian website for a go to when looking for your recommendations.
Thank you! Love your style and I’m feeling like I am growing in my wardrobe knowledge 🙂 …Tina

    1. Hey Tina, that must be so frustrating. Honestly, though, I have no idea where to even begin looking for items on Canadian sites or how to link to the Canadian version of Nordstrom or other US retailers.

    2. I feel your pain Tina! Exchange rate and shipping to Canada plain sucks. Plus we lack the stores they have in USA or the stores we do have (Walmart) don’t carry the same cute items as Walmart USA such as Time & Tru line or EV1 line…..its pitsy. Hopefully this post reaches corporate American executives’ attention that Canada is another market to explore.

  7. Love both of these outfits. What would you say are your two top “go-to” colors in peep-toe booties for fall? I have your coloring and would like to add another pair to my sandy beige color pair that I have. Thanks! (Maybe a soon post?)

  8. I love those pumps and how you’ve styled them. The rust is a great color on you not easily worn by many. I have a tank top the exact style like the one your wearing but mine is a cream with a pattern ( the same color) going throughput it. I bought mine at Banana Republic outlet to wear with olive green denim pants and denim jacket.
    Have a great weekend
I love these Friday’s you and Cyndi are doing.

  9. Here in Buffalo, we go from bare legs to black tights almost overnight.  Would these shoes look ridiculous with dark tights?

  10. I really like my Rag & Bone skinnies with raw hem. I am finding the loose strings on the hem are kind of balling up. Do you ever trim the fringe when it gets a bit too much? Thanks!

  11. I sincerely hope you are joking about receiving hate mail from those of us who benefit daily from you and your blog! We can always wait until things are restocked or just duplicate the basic idea from our closets!

    1. I get some pretty snarky comments from time to time. Usually from first-time commenters, who for some reason never take the time to say something nice, but have all the time in the world to be snippy. #comeswiththeterritory

Honestly, though, 99.9% of the comments I get are lovely and supportive. I do have the best readers. 🙂

  12. I just grabbed the top in the honey mustard. I wish they would have had the cognac left, it is the perfect shade. In any case, I am excited I will have a new top in some Fall colors.

  13. Well, now I have plaid pumps in the DSW cart. Now just have to decide whether to hit the buy button.
It’s hard to think about winter and fall when it’s “only” going to be 96 degrees today. BUT they are forecasting high 80s for later this week! Yay!
