Fall Work Wear Outfit with New Neutrals

This post is sponsored by Nordstrom and ShopStyle.

Word on the street is that fall 2019 fashion trends are returning to classic feminine silhouettes and styles.

We’re going to be seeing a lot of midi length skirts and dresses, more modest shapes, and cinched-in waists. Neutrals are also big this fall — particularly camels, greys, and browns.

Today I’m teaming up with Nordstrom to bring you a work wear look that incorporates some of these trending styles.

Selfishly, I’m happy to hear about more fitted styles and longer skirts coming back into vogue. They’re definitely more flattering on my particular body type, and I’m also drawn to more polished looks with a bit of an edge.

I started with a knit midi skirt by Halogen, one of Nordstrom’s exclusive brands. Mine isn’t online in black, but this one is similar and It’s a great price point if you need a classic pencil skirt, and the pull-on style and stretchy knit fabric make it comfortable to wear all day.

I really like this length because it’s long enough to cover my knees, but not so long that it looks frumpy.

Notice how it ends above the widest part of my calf. Generally you don’t want the hem of your skirt (or pants, for that matter) to fall right at the widest part of the calf. It’s best if it’s above or below.

I’ll link up some other skirt options at the end, with different lengths.

Next, I added this stripe blouse. I think this is such a pretty print for fall, but it comes in a gazillion other colors and prints so there are lots of options.

I hardly ever tuck my tops in because I’m very short-waisted and busty, but in this case I was able to blouse it out some, which creates a pleasing balance.

It also looks nice front-tucked into pants or jeans for a more casual look. For size reference, I have both the skirt and blouse in a small.

And aren’t these shoes fun!?! Believe it or not, they’re very walkable. Due to the shape, they stay on my feet easily, and I did a bit of walking to and from this photo shoot location.

The minute I saw them, I knew they were perfect for completing this outfit. Black or nude shoes would work too, of course, but I think this umber is much more interesting.

I love the croc print as an alternative to the popular snakeskin we’re seeing so much right now, and the umber color is a nod to fall and also pulls the brown from the stripes in the blouse.

I realize not all work environments allow mules, but I think they look professional enough for most office settings. Of course, another option is a classic pump — I like this one in the cognac suede.

I topped off the look with this cognac leather jacket from Sam Edelman that I picked up at the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale back in July, and it’s now on sale again for 33% off. I’m so excited that it’s finally getting cool enough to wear it here in Pennsylvania!

The leather is so super soft, it’s like butter. I like how the subtle moto details give the look a bit of an edge, but it still looks polished and classy.

This jacket also comes in grey, and I’m wearing the small.

I wouldn’t keep this jacket on inside, but the nice thing about this outfit is it’s interesting enough to stand alone without the topper.

The jacket does add a nice finishing touch, though, when you’re going to and from work or out to lunch.

I kept my accessories fairly minimal, but I did add a fun metal leaf drop earring for some shine near my face.

I have several pairs of Halogen earrings, and I’ve been pleased with them all. They hold up well, look on trend but still classic, and they’re a good price too.

A classic black tote finishes off this work wear look!

If you don’t need work wear (or if you just want to maximize your cost per wear), each of these separates mixes and matches with other wardrobe items for maximum versatility.

Outfit Details:

Halogen boxy blouse // Halogen midi skirt // Louise et Cie mules // Sam Edelman leather moto jacket // similar tote // Halogen drop earrings// Maui Jim sunnies

  1. Such a classic look. The skirt looks very slimming on you. Love the color of the leather jacket. I forgot I have a faux leather jacket in that same color so I must get it out when the temperature drops..,
    Have a good one😀

  2. What a great look! It’s got a lot of personality for professional settings without being “look at me”. Those shoes have a really interesting high end look, and I’m picturing how they might look with trousers or even jeans, too.

  3. Don’t you look so nice in this very classic and feminine outfit!  Those shoes are fabulous as well.  Have a great day!

  4. Good morning….I love it that midi skirts and dresses are back.  But I have to say, I do some “trendy” pieces, but I am very much a person who wears what I think looks good on me.  Because if I feel good about how I look my confidence carries it,

I’m ready for fall weather…love layering, sweaters, long cardigans, etc. I’m also thrilled that rust is a big color this year…a great color.

    Have a blessed week…Sherli

  5. Perfect timing hv work seminar and I can copy
    many of the pieces.
I also love the length of skirt and shoes…
    So classic!
Sadly brown looks horrible on me but again
    you wear it well.

  6. Great for working women. I’m retired but this would be good for my granddaughter who is interviewing now for jobs. She just graduated college. Great post.

  7. What a great, classic outfit! I love that you chose a little longer skirt! I am always looking for them & they have been hard to find in the past. Thank you for also linking more skirts in that length. 🙂

  8. First off – W O W! I need to go and get this outfit ASAP for work! And the shoes! Oh the shoes! 🙂 You hit this one out of the park.

  9. I love this outfit! I haven’t worn a dress in quite some time, but I think it is smart to have an outfit like this in your closet. And the prices are really reasonable! I love the shoes you put with it as well!

  10. That skirt was made for you! That outfit is gorgeous from head to toes. Have to pull out my warmer jackets as someone flipped the weather switch to “cold” here. It was 40F on the way to work….. 😯 Not ready for winter yet.

  11. I don’t have a use for workwear like this, but if I did, I’d copy the whole look. The moto jacket is what really makes the outfit. Great post, Jo-Lynne!

  12. Jo-Lynne, one of your top outfits of the year!!!   Gorgeous, flattering, unexpected elements.  Love it.

Ordered the skirt immediately.  (I love that blouse, but it doesn’t work on my narrow shoulders)
    Great post!!

  13. You look stunning in this!   It amazes me how you pull outfits like this together.   Thanks for all the great advice!!

  14. Wow such great work wear inspiration and you look amazing in this outfit!  I live in Canada so it’s not easy for me to buy the exact pieces but I will be looking for something similar. I feel like I’m in a bit of a rut with workwear and don’t feel all that inspired to branch out. But this outfit gives me tons of ideas so thank you!

  15. I love this look!  Some of the reviews of the skirt say the pockets are awkward (hit in a bad spot, or gape open), but in your pictures I can’t even tell it has pockets.  I’m usually not a fan of the way pockets look on a skirt or dress.  🤷‍♀️ Maybe I should order it and just see how it looks for me. I always am on the lookout for work wear. Thanks for this post!

    1. Hey Amorette. I think my skirt is actually this one – https://shopstyle.it/l/7TGj

I bought mine in store so when I looked online, I didn’t see this one in black so I didn’t realize it was it. But when someone else mentioned the pockets, I realized it couldn’t be the same b/c mine does not have pockets. I’m sorry for any confusion! I still think the one I linked is worth a try, given the price and easy return policy if it doesn’t work out.

  16. Fabulous outfit — just adore the look, classy, on trend and edgy. The mules too are unexpected and fab!
    Love this feminine, chic look.
    Elegance rules 👍🤗!
Really enjoy your posts – thank you !
