Fashion at the Oscars

best and worst oscars fashion

I’m not a big movie watcher, but I like to watch the red carpet portion of the Oscars so I can ogle all the beautiful (and not-so-beautiful) gowns. Unfortunately, last night I fell asleep before the first celebrity hit the red carpet, but that didn’t stop me from getting online first thing this morning to see what everyone was wearing.

Here are a few of my favorites:

penelope cruz at the Oscars

Penelope Cruz is absolutely stunning in this Giorgio Armani creation. I love the cut and color, and also that it is modest and still breathtaking.

cameron diaz at the Oscars

Cameron Diaz rocks this Gucci gown. She manages to look appropriately formal without losing her casual California-girl image.

Sarah Hyland at the Oscars

Sarah Hyland is adorable and age appropriate in her lilac gown. Love this.

Glenn Close at the Oscars

Glenn Close looks amazing in this teal gown, and completely age appropriate — on the other end of the age spectrum!

Kelly Ripa at the Oscars

Kelly Ripa is a class act, as always. Simply gorgeous in this butter yellow gown.

angelina jolie at the oscars

Angela Jolie rarely disappoints, and this year is no different. While brights and light neutrals may be the trend of the season, she shows us that black is always hot. Although I could do without the very deliberate display of leg. I get that it’s a highlight of the gown, but just let it happen naturally, Angie. That is the point, after all. Still, I’ll let it pass because the dress is amazing and her hair and makeup is perfection.

Octavia Spencer at the Oscars

Octavia Spencer is picture perfect in this sequined platinum gown. It is so flattering.

Emma Stone at the Oscars

Emma Stone is radiant in red. I’m not usually one for the bows but I love how she incorporates this trend into a formal gown. She looks stunning.

And a few of my disappointments:

Viola Davis at the Oscars

This is unfortunate. Viola Davis is stunning in green, but it looks like she pulled a dress off the rack rather at a department store and didn’t bother to have it fitted for her, um, assets.

gwyneth paltrow at the Oscars

I adore Gwyneth, but I thought her gown was a huge miss this year. I’d love to see this dress without the cape, but even then it’s very plain. And I’m not sure what was up with her hair. I miss her longer locks; the slicked-back look doesn’t do much for her.

Sandra Bullock at the Oscars

Sandra Bullock rarely misses, but this . . . this is A Miss. This dress does nothing for her stellar figure and it’s just odd. Plus, I am not at all a fan of the plunging back.

And while we’re speaking of plunging backs . . .

J. Lo is a gorgeous woman, for sure and certain, but I wish she wouldn’t push the limits so much. This gown may be flattering enough from the front, but it’s just WAY too much skin. And I’m not a fan of the hair either.

Natalie Portman at the Oscars

Natalie Portman is another one of my favorite actresses, but this dress does nothing for her. The styling is nice, I guess, but I can’t see past those polka-dots.

How about you? Did you tune in to the Oscars last night? Who is on your best and worst dressed lists this morning???

  1. I loved Michelle William’s Louis Vuitton dress! And I liked Penelope. And I did like Natalie’s red polka dot dress, but I’m a polka dot kind of girl. It was vintage Dior, which is good in and of itself. 🙂

  2. I thoughts Viola Davis looked gorgeous with her natural ‘do and the green dress. And thanks for letting me see the Angelina pose everyone went on (and on and on) about.

  3. I actually really liked Melissa McCarthy’s look. It’s difficult to be a plus size woman in Hollywood and I think she pulled it off beautifully!

  4. I enjoyed seeing your post today. I was trying to watch the show last night, but the family lives here too! I like your picks and they look lovely. I like the pre show more than the award part, so this is nice to read this morning. thanks for sharing

  5. I think you are spot on with most of these. I didn’t like Glenn Close’s dress though – it felt so 80’s to me.
I loved Natalie Portman’s dress – but I think it was just the wrong event. The polka dots and fabric feel springy and light to me (despite it being a gown). Great dress, just not for this event.

  6. Spot on, as usual, I thought Penelope Cruz was the most beautiful of the evening. In general, I thought it was a classier than usuals range of dresses. I think Angelina’s dress revealed her absolute disturbing level of gauntness. Geesh, woman, put a pound on would ya? I would love to know your thoughts on the speeches. I loved Meryl Streep’s speech, but hated her dress. 🙂

  7. Thanks for Monday morning recap! I don’t have the patience for watching the whole thing live. I always catch the last few awards and then look forward to the highlights the next morning. Your pics and commentary were perfect. I actually really liked almost all of the dresses this year, especially the colors in Penelope Cruz’s blue, Natalie Portman’s red polka dot vintage, Glenn Close’s unexpected dark green. Viola Davis’s natural hair look was young and exuberant, but you are right that the top half of the dress could have had a more flattering fit. Really, the only oddball moment, for me, was Angelina’s leg. It stuck out like a sore thumb, er, leg, er… whatever – it was weird. You know what I mean. -S

  8. I agree, Penelope Cruz was the most beautiful. I also loved that The Artist won best picture. A fabulous film.

Regarding Jennifer Lopez – Mae West said it best:

“I like my clothes to be tight enough to show I’m a woman, but loose enough to show I’m a lady.”

  9. Totally agree re: Natalie Portman! I normally love her style but man those polka dots are just dizzying

  10. Great write-up, but I totally was over Angie’s leg and would put her on my worst list for that. She is beautiful and I do not think she needs to be that deliberate ever! And I loved Gwyneth’s dress! It was so simple and elegant. But I have heard the same comments from other’s like yours!

My favorite was Michelle Williams. Thought it was perfect!

    1. I know, I hear ya on Angie, but I really did LOVE that dress, and her hair and makeup and the whole package.

I wasn’t a huge fan of that peplum on Michelle Williams, but I did love the color and overall styling of the dress. Same with Tina Fey. She looked great, but I’m not a peplum girl.

  11. Wow, we actually disagreed a few times. I didn’t like Glenn Close or Angelina and did like Viola Davis and Jennifer Lopez. I think I like the picture of Glenn Close more than the actual dress. When I watched her on the live feed, it didn’t seem to fit well and the color was a not-so-attractive forest green.

Sorry, feel like I’m being so negative. I do like all your other best-dressed though!

    1. LOL, I’m going based on photos alone. And I actually went back and added Glenn Close at the end. I’m not a huge fan of the big train but I thought the color looked more teal, and I like the top of the dress and the jacket.

I think Jen’s dress was flattering, I’m just not a fan of all that skin.

And Viola’s I would have loved if the top had more coverage.

I guess we’ll have to agree to disagree on Angelina. 😉

  12. This is cool! I missed the red carpet stuff, so I love these recaps. I loved Gwyneth’s dress! And Sarah Hyland’s 21. Everyone thinks she’s a teen b/c of Modern Family. I even think the polka dots are cute on Natalie. I didn’t care for the red on Emma Stone, though. It was just too much dress, not enough her.

    Thanks again!

  13. Great recap! No way was I watching that whole awards show, or the gazillion hours of pre and post shows. But, I admit, I was curious about the gowns this morning. So I was excited to see your post on my google reader this morning.

  14. GOOD GORGEOUS would you look at Glenn Close? Not loving the color of that dress, but she looked spectacular anyway. I didn’t watch last night, so I’m glad you’ve got these pictures up. I LOVE Kelly Ripa’s look, and Natalie Portman’s too, even up to and including the polka dots. They are going to be super, super hot for spring and summer, it looks like.

  15. Well played, Jo-lynne! I really liked Emma Stone’s dress – even though the bow was a bit much. J-Lo apparently had a well-covered up wardrobe malfunction – but when you wear a dress like that, you’re asking for it! I did NOT like Angelina Jolie’s dress – she looked so thin and swallowed-up in it. But overall – even bad looks good on the red carpet!
