Fashion Over 40: Daily Mom Style 04.22.15

Welcome back to my weekly Fashion Over 40: Daily Outfits post where I share what I wore this week and link up with other fabulous fashion bloggers around the web! I’m just trying to stay fabulous after 40 and sharing how I translate the current trends to work for a typical suburban mom. I hope you find some wearable fashion inspiration here.

Last Wednesday was the first nice day we’d had in a while, so I happily broke out this white tee (recently marked down to $29.99) and my mint green skinnies. They are the Paige Verdugo Ankle Skinny, but unfortunately the Beach House color that I have is sold out; I picked them up last year when they were on sale.

If you’re in the market for a pastel skinny jean, the Paige Verdugo Ankle Skinny in Desert Sunset is gorgeous, and it’s on sale for $141 at Bloomingdales.

The fabric on these jeans is super soft and lightweight — perfect for warmer weather. I’m tempted to snatch them up, but they’re not in the budget this month.

I wanted something to fill in the neckline so I went with my silver Silpada Duomo Necklace. I like how it’s casual but still makes a statement.

I wore my blush ballet flats from Payless, and I carried a small brown crossbody. It’s all I need most of the time since I usually just run my kids around and go out on short errands. I’m really enjoying not lugging a heavy handbag everywhere.

The BIJOU Bracelet is from Three Angels Children’s Relief, a non-profit organization that serves orphans and at-risk families in Haiti. I thought the colors were pretty with this pastel outfit.

I wore this outfit one chilly, rainy day last week. The pink and white striped sweater is a few years old, and it’s perfect for springtime. It was from Banana Republic, I believe.

I wore it with my DL1961 Florence skinnies (in the Topeka wash) and my Hunter rainboots. Simple silver accessories complete the look.

This next outfit is one I put together for an impromptu date night last Friday. I picked up the top last week at Ross, and the white jeans are another new wardrobe edition. I like the fit of my Florence skinnies so much that I ordered a pair in white when I discovered them on sale at Nordstrom a few weeks ago. My other white jeans are getting too tight, and I’m tired of having to work around them so I decided to just get a pair that fits comfortably.

I wore the silver Silpada necklace again and a stack of bangles.

The black patent wedge sandals are a pair that I picked up on impulse at the outlets a few years ago. I remember thinking at the time that I didn’t need them, but as it turns out, I get a lot of wear out of them in the spring and summer months.

I didn’t end up wearing them to dinner, though. I was going to, and then I decided I wasn’t ready to wear heels for that long so I switched to my flat white sandals before we left the house. I really love the black patent wedges with this outfit, though. I like the way they bring out the black in the top and anchor the outfit.

On Saturday, I hosted a bridal shower for a friend at church. The rain had cleared out, and it was a perfect spring day — warm, sunny, gorgeous. I wanted to wear a dress or skirt so I decided to use the opportunity to debut the Sarah Dress that was sent to me from Leave Nothing But Footprints. It’s so comfy and easy to wear. I like the slightly longer length, and the asymmetrical striped pattern is fun.

Unfortunately, I didn’t love the way it looked on my top half, so I decided to wear my jean jacket over it. Dresses are tricky when you’re well endowed, just sayin’. I actually like it a lot with the denim jacket. It adds interest to the outfit, and I’ll definitely wear it this way again.

That Silpada Duomo Necklace just seemed to go with everything this week. In addition to that, I added these tri-tone knotted bangles and my two-tone chain link bracelet watch.

The black sandals are the Adie by Vionic. They have Orthaheel technology, so they are incredibly comfortable and supportive for my finicky feet. I wore them all day without any pain.

I changed on Saturday evening to go to a cookout with friends. I kept my jewelry but switched to this orange tank and olive green cargo skirt.

This outfit is old and faded, but I love it. Every time I try to wear another tank top with this skirt, it seems too long and bulky in the middle. I like the longer shirt trend for wearing with low-rise jeans, but skirts need a shorter style, and this one is perfect. I also like the shape of the neckline and how the straps are wider than most. I wish Banana Republic would make this tank again. I’d buy 10 of them.

The skirt is from Target. I found it on the clearance rack probably 8 years ago. It’s been good to me over the years, but it’s probably time to find a replacement.

On a whim, I dusted off my Frye sandals. I don’t think I wore them at all last summer because of my plantar fasciitis, and I miss them. My PF isn’t too bad right now, and my other foot is feeling more stable now that the stress fracture and torn tendon seem to be healing nicely, so I decided that it would be okay to wear them since I’d be sitting for most of the evening.

I wore this outfit to church on Sunday. I had nursery duty so I just wore jeans a tee-shirt.

Since it’s such a simple outfit, I tried to jazz it up a bit with accessories. The bracelet and earrings are from Stella & Dot. The necklace came in a Stitch Fix long ago.

I wore these taupe point flats from the Christian Siriano for Payless collection, and I grabbed the blue bag as I was heading out the door. I realized later on that this would make a great July 4th outfit, ha!

Finally, last night I got dressed up for a fancy event in the city. This dress is another Ross bargain. It’s a Ralph Lauren, which is always a good fit for me. I snagged it for something like $40. I’m so glad I picked it up because the other dresses I was thinking of wearing are a little more bare and also a bit snug. When I remembered that I had this, I knew it was the perfect dress for the occasion. The fabric is comfortable so I wasn’t pulling and tugging and feeling self-conscious all night. I also like that it’s not black. Not that there’s anything wrong with black, but it’s nice to be different sometimes.

I really wanted to wear higher heels, but I decided to be sensible and go with these low pumps. I’m glad I did because I ended up standing all evening. The necklace is from CAbi. I debated going with statement earrings instead of a necklace, but you could hardly see them behind my hair, so I decided to go this route.

Speaking of hair, I wanted to try something different so I used two bobby pins to hold a small portion of hair back from my face. I hope it didn’t look too juvenile, but I’m tired of wearing my hair down all the time. It seems like I ought to be able to do some cuter things with it. That’s one of my goals for 2015 — to learn some different ways to wear my hair. It’s good to have goals, right??

  1. LOVE that blue dress ! I love it when someone gets a great piece at Ross or TJ Max but part of me cringes because I know there is ZERO hope of dropping into the same store here and finding the same dress!

  2. I loved your blue dress from Ross (Ralph Lauren). It looked fabulous on you. When you see similar dresses on hangers….it’s really hard to tell how cute they are. I usually shy away…but now I am going to have to try them on. Thanks.

  3. Thanks so much for being “real.” I have many times that I try something on and it just feels too tight that particular month. Also love that you don’t always show fancy high heeled shoes because I am a teacher and can’t wear those most of the time all day at school. I do have a few pairs I wear to church, but try to get shoes I can wear all day. My feet are finicky too and I deal with PF also.

  4. How on earth do you keep track of all of the small things? i mean how do you know one where each piece of your jewelry came from? I have no idea on most of mine and I have a very tiny amount!

Glad to hear the foot is slowly getting better.

    1. LOL, I don’t know! I mean, most is Stella & Dot. And that one piece from CAbi was for a sponsored post that I remember. Honestly, I just have a weird recall, I guess. 😉

    1. I had to go check, but yes, it was Calvin Klein. I am having a hard time figuring out from the receipt how much it cost, though. I think it was 10.99??? Is that possible!?

  5. Hi!
Can you please tell me a good place to buy colored pants (is it colored denim, usually?) like your mint green ones? I’d like some for work. I wear brown steel-toed boots at work and am tired of blue denim. I also think I’d like maybe “straight cut ” jeans instead of skinny b/c skinny just isn’t appropriate for work. I work at a sewage treatment plant with a bunch of guys. So, blue denim alternatives are what I am looking for!
    Thanks!

    1. Hey Sara. I’m a sucker for designer denim but I am assuming you don’t want to spend that much for work at the sewage treatment plant? Have you tried Kohl’s? Hm, not finding much. There is this: https://bit.ly/1Hw9VmU

What about GAP and Old Navy? It seems that most straight leg styles do not come in colors. GAP has some colored skinnies. https://bit.ly/1DT3IPr and https://bit.ly/1DmIjMd but I’m not seeing any at Old Navy. Macy’s has some. https://bit.ly/1yWV2c4

      Does that help at all?

          1. Thanks. I like those blue ones, but I am looking for something not so skinny. Now, my DKNY Soho Skinny jeans are nice and while they are called skinny, they really aren’t very tight on me, which I like for work. Maybe a khaki or some navy khakis.

          2. And no, I wouldn’t wear white. Too much of a chance they’ll get something dirty on them.

  6. I LOVE your hair in the blue dress! Good job! It makes you look young and hip! I’m also looking for other things to do with my hair besides down all the time. I have shorter bangs, but a similar style to yours. Thanks for the inspiration!

  7. Some great looks, I actually love the casual ones-the pink striped sweater and the 4th of July outfit. Both comfortable, but u look very put together!
