Fashion Friday | A Peek Into My Closet

I would love to see your closet!  You always have such great outfits, and are great at pulling things from here and there. I’d love to see what you have lots of, what you’ve saved (like that black sweater too short for jeans.. I’d have passed it on, but you knew to keep it for later?!) and what you keep out of your closet. I feel like you mix and match a lot, and I can’t tell if/how I can do that better… or if you have more options, and I now have an excuse to shop. 😉

I have actually been thinking it would be fun to do a closet post so here goes!

Funny thing, a few years ago a friend was here and we were discussing outfits and I took her upstairs to my closet. She was shocked how FEW items I had in my closet. I do shop a lot (Tara, I subscribe to the theory that a woman never needs an excuse to shop!!) but I also get rid of stuff a lot. I hate keeping clothes around that I don’t wear, so I purge my closet faithfully every spring and fall.

But my friend made me realize that I probably get a little TOO gung-ho with my purging. Sometimes I regret getting rid of things. Ever since then, I’ve started being more careful about what I get rid of.

I’ve also tried to add some classic pieces to my closet that stick around, as opposed to trendy things that I only wear for a season or two. I’ve gotten better about understanding what works for me, so I don’t need to get rid of so much. (Although, admittedly, I still get rid of A LOT. I always try to give it to people who will use it or to a thrift shop nearby where some of my friends volunteer.)

You asked about that black shirt that I happened to keep around, and it came in handy when I wanted to wear that cognac skirt. Funny thing, I picked up that top to add to my get-rid pile, and as I did, I spotted that cognac skirt, and I thought, hmmm…. that might actually work. And I hung the black top back up and kept it. SO glad I did, it worked out well for our date night a few weeks ago!

Here is another example of a dress I’ve almost gotten rid of more than once, but I’m glad I’ve held onto it. I’m learning that it’s okay to keep things around if you only wear them once a year.

However, if you haven’t worn it in a year or two, you might as well give it to someone who can enjoy it.

Funny that you say I do a lot of mix-and-matching. I’ve always tended towards buying outfits, rather than pieces, so I tend to wear the same things together in the same way. It is this What I Wore column that has challenged me to mix it up some and try to put new outfits together.

I have to say, I’ve come a long way. I used to live in solid t-shirts and jeans.

So here you go. A peek into my closet.

As you can see I have a lot of jeans! (No surprise there, right?) I try to hang as many tops as I can, to leave room in my dresser drawers. Sweaters take up A LOT of space.

If you’re wondering, I do have a rather large dresser, where I keep all my tank tops, sweaters, pajamas, and underthings. And I have two drawers in another dresser for my workout clothes and loungewear.

A few years ago, I started keeping my nicer shoes in their original shoe boxes, as you can see in the photo above. The rest I keep in these shoe hanging thingies. And my floor is covered with boots. I still haven’t figured out a good way to keep them.

And as you can see, this is where I keep my handbag collection.

You can also see that my daughter’s ballet costume from last year is still hanging in my closet. What you can’t see is, beside it, I also have some of my most treasured baby clothes hanging there too. I do believe it is time to pack those things away. Maybe I’ll get to it before they go to college.

And finally, another closer-up view of the clothes area.

I try to hang like things together, and then hang by color, so it’s easy to find what I’m looking for.

Oh, yes, that is my violin down there on the bottom. I haven’t played in 20 years, but I keep meaning to get it fixed up because my daughter is taking violin lessons now, and I think it would be fun to play along with her when she’s practicing. Who knows, I might even brush up enough to play in church or something.

And that’s about all I can think of to say about my closet!

  1. Hi! I came across your blog when I was looking up videos on Thirty-One bags (since I’m hosting an online party, I’m trying to narrow down my list of what I might want to get with the hostess credits). Anyways, just wanted to say I love your haircut on you! And you look stunning in black and that red handbag! (black totally doesn’t work on me, I’m more of a gray girl). Have a great weekend! 🙂

  2. I’ve seen boots hanging on pinterest. I think people were using some kind of clip to hang them. Thanks for letting us take a peek. 😉

  3. Thanks for the peek into your closet! Im always looking for organizing tips and tricks because my closet is so small. It does help to hang shirts by color, doesn’t it 🙂 Also, love the dress, it is a great pattern that would be really fun to pull out every now and then. You have a couple of dresses that I really like the bold colors and strong patterns they have!

  4. Thanks for the look in your closet. I wish I had a large closet like that. I purge a lot of clothes by taking them to resale shops and get a little bit of money for them; I always give the money right back to them before I leave the store! I’ve heard of friends having parties where they swap clothes they don’t want anymore. That would be fun! I had to chuckle at the violin; I have my flute in my closet.

  5. I want to know what thrift shop you bring your clothes to 🙂 If they have other things as nice as yours I should be shopping there!

  6. Just wanted to stop by and finally leave a comment after popping over every now and then after seeing you on WIWW on The Pleated Poppy….I recently started cleaning out my closet (to my husband’s delight) and I now have a huge pile sitting on my front room couch waiting for me to haul it off for donation…..I hope that will get done this weekend or I’m afraid those clothes might somehow end up back in my closet….Great blog….I’ll be back 🙂
