Fashion Friday: Better Late Than Never

Even though Big Mama isn’t doing a Mr. Linky on Fashion Fridays anymore, I’m still participating when I have something to add.  And this week Kellyn emailed me with a desperate plea for fashion advice.  Now remember, a fashion expert I am NOT.  However, I do like to shop, and I almost always have an opinion.  And I’m always one to help a friend in need, just so long as it doesn’t involve puke or manual labor.  So put your thinking caps on, because as always, I’m going to ask you to weigh in at the end.

Kellyn says:

For my birthday my Sister and Mom are taking me shopping for a (almost) full fall/winter wardrobe.  One Problem…I don’t know what I need!  I know Jeans and sweaters but after that I am stuck.  I work in a place where simple is best.  Jackets don’t work, and I get dirty most days (nice office job, I know). I lug boxes around, but I can also sit for hours at a time.  I like to be comfy, but I need more than my standard jeans and t-shirt at the office.  Please help!!

I say:

Well.  Jeans and t-shirts are my specialty, but if I had a job where I was required to leave the house, I think I’d want to invest in a few pairs of comfy pants, just for variety’s sake.  Like these Dockers Pants in the Metro Boot Cut at Macy’s.  They come in a khaki color, but if you’re worried about them getting marked up when you’re lugging boxes, the brown might be nice.  You could pair them with a sweater like this Argyle Crewneck from Tar-Jay.

Or if your workplace is tres casual, how about corduroys?

The boyfriend sweater is popular this season and so easy to throw on over a t-shirt.  Layering adds interest without being fussy.

I also like the open cardigan.  In fact, I’m just a sweater junkie.  Look at these sweaters from the Gap.  ALL SO CUTE!

And you should totally get a scarf.  That can really jazz up an outfit.  To keep it modern and avoid the frump factor, try a patterned scarf like this or this from Old Navy.  Or this ruffled scarf from Forever 21.

If you’re bored with t-shirts and sweaters, how do you feel about a tunic top?  They are a nice change of pace.  I really wanted to grab a photo of one of them, but JCPenney.com is NOT cooperating with me tonight.  HMPH.

Finally, let’s talk shoes.  I’m a huge fan of boots in the wintertime, but sometimes I just want a shoe.  The folks at Ariat sent me these clogs to review, and I have to say, I LOVE THEM.

They are incredibly comfortable and the perfect style for this in-between weather when you may not want a boot, but you want something substantial and supportive and warm to wear with jeans or corduroys or khakis.  I think they’d be great for your new fall wardrobe!

What do YOU say?

What do you think Kellyn needs for her new fall/winter wardrobe?

  1. First, let me say, great post. (And I do love those clogs too.)

Second, I just had to stop when you said, “I do like to shop . . .” I don’t like to shop, and after the day I had yesterday with an ornery tween in a mall I don’t think I will ever set foot in a mall again. I can hardly wait to see how you feel about shopping when your daughter hits eleven or twelve. GRRRRR.

  2. I thought corduroys too. And outfits that are versatile — your recommendation about scarves and sweaters is SO good. You need things that you can WEAR to the office to look nice, but when it’s time to lug boxes for a half-hour, you need to be able to peel off the scarf/sweater/shawl, and work. Then, when it’s time to be at the phone again, slip it back on. Not all t-shirts are created equal, and some are dressy enough that they look classy. LL Bean sells some that are of finer stuff that the boxy old cotton tees we’re all used to.

  3. I love the idea of the scarves to spice things up. They can go with simple jeans and tee or cords and tee. I’m on the hunt for some new ones myself!!

Just wanted to come by and say hi too!! I’ve missed checking in Musings while I’ve been running around the 5th grade! It’s good to be back. Glad to see all is well.

    Love the new countertops!!!

  4. Oh you are so fabulous. I love the cords, and the scarves. I hadn’t thought of cords at all! I will have to look for those. I love Gap sweaters, always so comfy.

I hadn’t heard about the Boyfriend sweater, that looks super comfy!

I will check in all day, we are off soon. Thanks so much Jo-Lynne! You are, as always, such a wonder!!

  5. Great suggestions. I so need some new scarves this season.

I always feel like the tunic top makes me look prego – something I will never EVER be again – so I tend to stay away from those.

Kellyn – you have to share with us on your blog what you come home with!

  6. I was just going to add that if Kellyn has to move boxes around on a fairly regular basis, to stay away from low rise pants. You don’t want to get over-exposed :~D Also, she may get warm from moving things around so a cute tee and cardigan might be great options for flexibility.

  7. I hate those shoes, what man would look at those and say, hey those shoes really make her look hot….I don’t think so. Have to admit they really look comfortable, and I am so into comfortable.

  8. A great way to dress up a pair of jeans is a comfy, cashmere sweater. I *heart* cashmere.

When you get a chance to swing by my blog, I gave you a blog award, ‘cuz well, you’re awesome and I love your blog!!

  9. I pretty much agree with everything you said. Good job! I have been coveting a flat boot lately, but I know I won’t be getting them. I barely convinced Husband I needed my heeled boots in black and brown. The thought of bringing more boots into the house would send him straight to the loony bin. 😉
