Fashion Friday: FLIP-FLOPS

It is Friday, the sun is shining, it is going to be 72 degrees in Philly today, and I’M GOING TO THE BEACH!

So let’s talk flip-flops.

Flip-flops may not be high fashion, but I’m a mom and I work from home and I unapologetically live in flip-flops from April through September.

Every summer I inevitably purchase 3 or 4 pair of Old Navy Flip-Flops — the cheap, rubber ones. What can I say? The colors and prints are fabulous, and they are usually priced at 2 for $5. What’s not to love?

That said, there is a big difference in quality between the $2.50 rubber flip flops and the $25 ones.

I have these, and they have lasted me two seasons, believe it or not. (I am a huge fan of white flip-flops.)

And you simply cannot beat a Havaiana flip flop. Havaianas set the standard for rubber flips, and they have tons of adorable prints to choose from. These are my current faves.

Rubber flip flops are great for wearing around the neighborhood and taking the kids to the pool, but let’s face it. There are times when you want to up the ante just a bit.

I hear great things about Teva flip flops, and they have some super cute styles, but unfortunately they don’t fit my foot very well. I have flat, narrow feet, and the Tevas are too loose on me. But that doesn’t stop me from drooling over them. I mean, how cute and comfy does the Mandalyn Wedge look?

When you want to look nice but still have the comfort and convenience of a flip-flop, I highly recommend the Born leather flip-flops. I can usually find some variation of these at Marshalls during the spring and summer. (Although my online search last night turned up nothing. I hope they’re not being phased out.)

They are so comfortable, and they definitely look nicer than the rubber ones when you’re going to be seen in public.

Flip-flops aren’t just for casual wear, though. You can dress up your outfit with a wedge flip flop, like the Born Tweet in Blue Nubuck.

Or what about the Clarks Latin Cha Cha in Brick Red?

Both are comfortable enough for all day and cute enough for a casual night out.

Of course it’s always fun to wear embellished flip-flops. Like these Reefs.

Or the Nine West Mikky.

I love metallic for its versatility. You can wear silver or gold or bronze with almost anything. I don’t know about you, but I get tired of black and brown.

Don’t miss the Nine West Friends & Family Event. Through 3/21/11, you can take an additional 30% off your entire purchase!

So how about you? Are you a fan of flip-flops? What is your favorite?

  1. I envy you being able to wear flip-flops at all!

I ONCE had a pair I could tolerate between my toes – they all are just too painful to wear 🙁

Do you have any recommendations for ones that even those who say they can’t wear flip-flops can wear?

    Enjoy the beach 🙂

    1. It always takes a few wears to get my feet used to them after a long winter. 🙂 Also, some thongs (like the Tevas) are more comfy than others.

    2. I only wear flip flops that have fabric between the toes instead of rubber – they are infinitely more comfortable!

    3. Have you ever tried Dr. Scholl’s? They are sort of making a comeback and have lots of cute colors/patterns. They are super comfy!! I got a cute pink pair that I wore last summer when I was pregnant. The strap that goes across the toes is adjustable.

  2. I am so obsessed with my Havaianas again this year. I swear there is NO better rubber sandal anywhere. I need a couple new pair for this year, I think – my old ones are at least 4 years old. CRAZY!

  3. I saw a bunch of the Born flip flops at TJ Maxx yesterday. Hurry! 🙂 I just bought a pair at the end of last year, so now I have them in black and brown. I don’t think I need more… but they’re so cute and comfy, so maybe…. 😉

  4. LOVE my flip flops! I fear I am getting too old to wear them, but, wear them I do! I linked up! Have a great weekend! The sun is finally shining in NC today!

  5. Every summer I try to make myself love flip flops. Wore them more last year than ever before but find that I do better with a more expensive pair. The cheap Wal-mart flip flops don’t work for my feet. You might like these cute shoes from Oka B. A friend of mine lives in them!

  6. Love me some flip flops! I’ve had countless pairs of the Old Navy ones but have been thinking of buying a pair of Havaianas. I tried on a pair last year and couldn’t believe how comfortable they were. I have no idea why I didn’t buy them!

  7. I sprung for some chaco flip flops last year. They are the best pair I have ever tried on and so much more comfortable.. I anticipate them lasting me years!

  8. I have 3 pairs, yes 3 of the Tevas in the Mandalyn Wedge. I have a wide foot. They are amazing support. And the cool thing is they look a tiny bit dressy with those fun strap colors.

I have some Borns in brown leather, they are ok, not necessarily my favorite, but that because I am die-hard Teva through and through.

And I honestly never ever do the plastic flip flops. My ankles would disown me (and we;re barely on speaking as it is).

  9. I love when Old Navy has their $1 flip flop sale! I live in flip flops as soon as I can though I’m not too good about getting the toe nails done. I spend a lot of time in the garden, and multiple pairs of flip flops make it so much easier to have a clean pair.

I love the red Clarks ones.

  10. Now THIS is a Fashion Friday post I can sink my teeth into! I live in flip-flops from ummm now until I’m forced to put them away for snow! (we’ll not mention the tennis shoes I have to wear every night for work grrr). I love flip-flops and it’s the one thing that I splurge on, even when I have a tight budget!

  11. I am a flip-flop junkie. I have hot-feet-issues so I wear those babies practically year round, and yes, even in the snow. My favorite pair were actually from Walmart and those even traveled to Hawaii with me last year. I also have an *amazing* pair of black ones that are a bit more dressy and those are Clarks — In. Love.

Yay for Spring & Summer so I don’t get weird looks wearing my beloved flips! <3

  12. ooooh I like those Clarks in Cha Cha Red, they look super comfy and the bonuse of being super cute. But of course that may have a lot to do with my fave color being red.

  13. I love the Born leather pair. I have a very similar pair from last year that are my favorites. And I always find mine at TJMaxx, so… there’s still hope! 🙂

  14. Seriously? 72. I’m so jealous as I sit in 40 degrees and rain for the past week. Flip flops–maybe in June. I loved all your choices!

  15. These are so cute! I think I need to get a pedicure and head out to the mall!
I have been lucky with cute shoes that I got from DSW a few years ago and an Old Navy pair that has done the trick.

  16. LOVE my flip flops! It’s 80 here today, but I’ve been wearing mine for weeks now!
Clarks also has nicer ones that are amazingly comfortable 🙂 I was just out this afternoon looking for some new styles!
BTW, been meaning to tell you that after your post sometime last year, I started looking for a pair of Keen shoes. Finally scored a pair for $18 on clearance and I absolutely LOVE them! They are so comfy and are my favorite shopping shoes. My feet don’t get tired, and my back doesn’t hurt, even after a full day, so thanks for the info 🙂

  17. I just bought the Clark Cha Cha’s in pewter. I am thinking they can go with black or brown so I’ll be packing less for Waikiki. They feel good and the foot bed is very comfy to 😉

  18. I just got the white Clarks a few weeks ago in hopes that the weather would be warm enough to wear them. My 17 year old has decided that she wants them so it looks like we will be in an all out war as to who will wear them more. LOVE them!! And Clarks last FOREVER!!

  19. Don’t hate me, but my go-to flip flops in the summer are Tevas. I absolutely LOVE how cushy they are on the bottom of my feet. Plus, they make me look much more outdoorsy than I really am. 😉

  20. I just recently bought some metallic flip-flops at Target for a whopping $13. I bought some last summer on a whim and loved them, but they were definitely only made for one summer of wear. So I bought new ones. I agree that the ON cheapies are great for the pool and kid stuff, but I cringe when I walk into a restaurant or church and see them. I’m a flip-flop snob. 😉

    1. There is DEFINITELY a time and place. 😉 I got the CUTEST Reefs this weekend – so cute I got 2 colors – silver and black. They have a slight wedge and a bit of sparkle on the thong part. LOVE LOVE LOVE.

  21. Yellow Box flip flops are the best! Hubs says I could open my own shoe store because I have so many pairs. They have a ton of bling on them and I say the more bling the better!

  22. I do like flip-flops, but not the cheap Old Navy kind (they hardly have any support and I tend to walk a lot).

My favorite pair of flip flops are FIT FLOPS. Have you heard of them? They’re super comfy…and pretty cute too. 🙂

  23. I couldn’t stop thinking about the Clarks 😉 So I went and ordered them from 6pm.com for $34. Great price for funky shoes!
