Fashion Friday :: Ramp Up Your Summer Style

What is your go-to summer style?

I don’t know about you, but I find it challenging to keep it stylish during the summertime. It is too hot to wear layers, and since I stay at home with my kids, I don’t have a lot of reason to get dressed up. I confess that I often stay in my pajamas or workout clothes until lunchtime. Hey, don’t judge. No one is here to see my slovenly self except maybe the postman.

Someone recently commented on a What I Wore post and asked me how I manage to look so cute in the summertime — which is kind of funny because week after week, as I post one tank top and shorts outfit after another, I think, Surely everyone is bored to tears! I’m such a plain jane! Then I get a comment like that, and I’m inspired to keep going.

In my typical obsessive way, I started to analyze what it is that I’m doing that maintains some semblance of style while still being casual and comfortable. And since I’m a blogger and have no unspoken thoughts, I decided to write a post about it.

How to Ramp Up Your Summer Style

1. Accessorize.

No matter what you are wearing, if you throw on a few simple accessories, it will take it up a notch. So even if you live in tees and shorts, take a few extra seconds to put on a pair of earrings and maybe a necklace or a bracelet.

Look how you can dress up a plain jane tee shirt and jeans with some jewelry and a cute pair of sandals.

2. Ditch the sneakers.

Please, OH PLEASE do not wear athletic sneakers unless you are exercising. There are SO MANY cute and comfy sandals and flip flops out there these days.

And even cute fashion sneakers if you must have laces.

3. Color.

I love neutrals as much as the next girl, but I have been forcing myself to wear color. And not just any color – colors that work FOR ME. So this will vary from person to person. Know what looks good on you, and what you feel good in, and make sure to buy those colors.

4. Details.

A tank top with cute lace detail is just as comfortable and easy to throw on as a plain ribbed tank top. Likewise with a tee-shirt. So if your closet is full of plain crew necks and v-necks, try to branch out and find a few tops with some extra details.

I used to wear plain v-neck tees all. the. time. My closet was getting really stale. This year I intentionally set out to buy tops with some interest, and it makes all the difference.

5. Throw on a dress!

Don’t be afraid to throw on a casual skirt or dress. I had a friend once who challenged me to start wearing casual skirts when I’m hanging out at home. It’s such a great casual look, and it’s as comfortable as shorts.

  1. I think all of these are great tips! I’ve been working on accessories lately, though hubby complains when I buy any, LOL. It’s a good thing I go to work and can say it makes me look more put together because otherwise he’d just tell me I didn’t wear any when we met and not to bother.

  2. Love these tips! I try to take the time to throw on a necklace or bracelet or to dig through and find cuter shoes than just plain rubber flip flops if I am in a plainer t-shirt. =)

  3. Great tips! I will be wearing comfy sandals just like that as soon as summer arrives here in Australia!

Thanks for having me this week. Have a great weekend.

    Best wishes,

  4. You know what else I’ve found to be a cute summer accessory? Scarves! I see celebrities wear them all of the time and have avoided them since I don’t like things bothering my neck and I live in humid VA and tend to get hot very easily. BUT…there are so many cute, lightweight scarves that you can just wear loosely draped around the neck. It’s an easy way to dress up a plain t-shirt/sleeveless shirt. It actually makes a nice wrap, too if you get chilly in a restaurant or meeting.
