Fashion Friday: Styles I Don’t Get

Let’s change it up today!  I thought rather than talking about fashion trends we like, we should talk about fashion trends we DON’T like, just for the heck of it.

Lumberjack Plaid

plaid

I just don’t get this look at all.  Perhaps it’s because I don’t care for the button-down shirt as a whole, but you put a manly plaid on it, and it just looks, well, manly.  To me.

Perhaps if you have long, flowing tresses and a very fitted version of the shirt with a smaller scale plaid (as in the last picture on this post) AND the figure of a supermodel, you might be able to pull it off.  But for the rest of us?  Eh.  I’m not buying it.

I will, however, make an exception for this jacket.  This I DO like.

I think it’s because it’s a) not a button-down shirt and b) black and white that I actually like it.

Open Toe Boots

boot

Now I love boots.  The collection in my closet is so extensive it’s almost embarrassing.  But this open-toe business just seems like an oxymoron to me.  When I wear a boot, I don’t care to expose my piggy toes to the elements, no matter how beautifully pedicured they may be, thankyouverymuch. Just imagine how gorgeous that boot would be with a closed toe.

Acid Wash Jeans

Now here’s a fad I thought I’d never see again.  (And I was perfectly content with that.)  I guess I was wrong.  Call them Tie-Dye if you want; these are the 80’s acid wash revisited, and they are a fashion abomination.  Can I get an amen?

Oh and also.  Would you pay eighteen-fifty for these?

distressed-jean

And um.  That’s $1850.  No, I did not forget a decimal point.

The Boyfriend Jean

Once again, a look that is only flattering on someone who is a size 00 and has the occasion for which to wear a pair of 4-inch platform heels, which is really the only way the boyfriend jean works.  Inotherwords, not this stay-at-home-mom.

The Ugg

ugg

I know these have been in fashion for YEARS now, but they are still going strong from anything I can tell.  And I feel obligated to mention them in this post.  The Ugg is, without a doubt THE MOST COMFORTABLE piece of footwear you will ever own.  If you don’t mind looking like a muppet, then by all means, go for it.  I have to admit my eye has adjusted to the look in recent years, and it doesn’t seem nearly as offensive as it used to.

HOWEVER.

If you want the comfort of an Ugg, may I suggest that you try one of their less popular, yet infinitely more flattering styles.  I have the Swell, for instance, and I absolutely love them.  The foot of the boot is more boot-like than slipper-like, and I usually wear them over my jeans so the pink stitching shows.

They even make a pair with a stylish wedge heel.

Or there is this, which resembles a riding boot.

And if you want to spoil your special someone this Christmas with something luxurious, I highly recommend the Coquette slipper.  I tried on this slipper at the mall a few weeks ago, and the salesman had to physically pry it off my foot to get me out of the store.  Don’t be fooled by the Ugg-imitation at Tar-Jay.  I’m wearing it right now, and while it’s warm and snuggly, it no where NEAR rivals the comfort of the Ugg.

And that, as they say, is that!

How about you?  What are some fashion trends you are avoiding this season?

Now I have some homework for you.

First, click on over to Big Mama’s Fashion Friday post and see what great finds she uncovered this week at the Nordstrom semi-annual sale — a sale that I would have most definitely experienced this week if I weren’t stuck at home with two sniffly children.  (To which my husband says, thank goodness!)

Then clickity-click over to Blissful Style for the Fight the Frump carnival and more great style tips and tricks.

THEN Girlymama was inspired to write a post about trends she swore she’d never wear but now she loves.  (And as far as the boyfriend jean is concerned, Girlymama is part of the 0.01% of the population who can pull off the boyfriend jean.  She is as cute as a button and has the body of an 18-year-old, even though she has born 3 children.  It is SO not fair.

Anyone else got a fashion post to share?  Heck, I may as well start a Mr. Linky.  SHEESH!

  1. An open toe boot? Completely bizarre! I’m with you on those other “fashions” as well and I love that black and white jacket!!

  2. We are on basically the exact same wavelength.

    Lumberjack? Hate it.
    Ugly jeans? Hate it.
    Uggs? Resistance is futile.

I have the Ugg Target knock-offs for those biting cold days when I have to run errands or do something outside… but I agree – I’m becoming less offended by them as time wears on.

This post has served as a reminder that I need to clean out my closet. I’m really not looking forward to that at all.

  3. LOL I knew you’d mention the plaid!!

I don’t do the popular Uggs either – but that’s mainly because I’m only 5’2″ with very short legs, they look dumb on me! LOL

    Great post!

  4. Those open toed boots are just wrong! They really miss the point of being boots!

I grew up wearing ugg* boots – as did every Australian. We all laughed in hysterics as teenagers at the thought of being so gauche as to be seen wearing a pair, then all went home and slopped about the house in them in secret.

They have always been overgrown house slippers, a purpose for which they are more than perfect! Wearing them as outer-wear if you’re not a surfer should never have become fashionable.

*By ugg boots, I mean the generic, genuine australian article, not the falsely trademarked brand owned by the american company “Deckers” which are manufactured in china.

  5. I saw the acid washed jeans, and had flashbacks. My dad would NEVER pay for jeans that were acid washed, he made his own. Oh man he would load that washing machine with his dark denim and bleach. It stunk the entire house up, but he loved it and wore them for YEARS. Please don’t ever let him know that those are even close to back in style, I might hurt him.

I don’t like the flannel either, this from a girl that LIVED in it during high school. It can be comfy, but not for a style. I think I would wear one to work in the yard, but that is about it.

  6. Whoa boy. We have some conflict here on the fashion posts today!

i love me some uggs and wear the boyfriend jean – although not in winter. cute wedges or maybe a flip flop are the only shoes you can wear with boyfriend jeans.

i agree WHOLEHEARTEDLY about the lumberjack trend. And those ridonkulous peep-toe boots. and lets all agree to just pretend we never saw those acid washed jeans, okay? *shudder*

  7. Can we talk about the tight rolling of the boyfriend jean too? Pegging your jeans is not flattering on ANYONE! Lunberjack – makes me start to twitch from the memories of the bad fashion choices I made in high school. Ditto with the acid wash (although that white jacket with those acid wash jeans in your pic would look fantastic with a grey pencil skirt for work. Just sayin’).

Maybe they’ll grow on me? I did buy my first pair of Uggs on sale at Nordstrom Rack last spring. And my mom bought this vest at Target which is starting to grow on me too: https://www.target.com/s/176-0710021-6357469?_encoding=UTF8&search-alias=tgt-index&keywords=mossimo%20plaid%20vest&searchSize=30&ref=sr_bx%5F1%5F1&searchView=grid5&searchNodeID=1038576&searchPage=1&searchRank=target104545

  8. Yeah, Kellyn, I wore them in college too – men’s shirts over sweats with my gum boots from L.L. Bean. Oh I was a picture, yes I was.

  9. I’m an ’80s girl, so it would be disloyal of me not to back the acid wash jeans. The open-toed boots, however? BLECH and blech! Who thought that one up? Looks ridiculous!!

  10. I’m embarrassed to say that I live in sweats. Fashion exhausts me. I hate wearing something that’s uncomfortable, and I hate trying on clothes. I know I should probably try harder to look nice, but I don’t like wearing stuff that hurts! Help!

  11. Yes, I have been wondering why the Paul Bunyon look is so tres chic this year. Almost as bad as the lacy pirate shirt thing that I’ve seen. Both are just wrong.

My least favorite look is the dress and jeans. It should be dress OR jeans. Not both. Again, if you are a size 00 and 18 it’s kind of cute but not on the forty year old house frau.

  12. Amy, I did. I got them on sale at Nordstrom last winter. I can’t remember the price, and I don’t know if they’ll go on sale again, but it’s worth checking around.

  13. Okay the open-toe boot was totally new to me as well.

And when I was at Costco today buying the Ugg knockoffs for Amanda (who was indoctrinated last year and LOVES them), I broke down and bought a pair for myself as well. It’s cold here, folks.

I’ve also bought her a few lumberjack plaid shirts — although in cute girly colors, not black and red.

But she’s in 6th grade, and if you can’t go trendy then, when can you??

  14. I’m totally with you. All the way. Chatted with someone last night who was wearing open-toed boots. (I’d never seen them before.) We were sitting down and I kept glancing at her toes, hoping she didn’t notice. Not a fan.

  15. Jenn, I agree. That’s exactly who should be wearing them.

And the Uggs. I’m wearing mine now. I know. Sometimes comfort trumps style.

  16. I am usually about three years behind the times when it comes to trends; case in point, capri pants. “Why would you wear capri pants? Either wear pants or shorts, why do you need something to keep your ankles cool?” Then, after a few seasons when they just. weren’t. going. away, I tried some on and decided maybe I could fall victim to the trend. Next came the Uggs. “Yeah, short for ugg-ly!” Annnnnnd now I find myself trying them on every chance I get. I am such a hypocrite. 🙂

  17. I have to laugh about the plaid lumberjack shirt. During the winter when I’m staying home, I put on one of my husband’s flannel shirts that shrunk. They are pretty comfortable on top of a t-shirt but I wouldn’t consider wearing them outside the house.

  18. I agree with TidyMom, I’m 5’3” and I look stumpy with Uggs. Heels are my friend, except definitely not open-toe boots. I love peep-toe heels, but I’m with you on the boots.

  19. It’s just too HOT. (Florida) I can’t imagine wearing Uggs. I think flames would shoot out of the top of them. jackets? And jeans? oh, kill me now. Too HOT. Maybe in February. But not in the middle of the day.

My favorite clothing? ANYthing that reads “moisture wicking” on the label. I just bought a sleeveless top TODAY.

  20. Those open-toed boots are hideous. They would get laughed right out of Minneapolis, where I live now. (But I bet they have a future in San Diego, where I used to live.)

Growing up in the Upper Midwest, I’ve lived through my share of lumberjack fashion. I think I got rid of my last flannel shirt two years ago. So I can’t go back now. I just can’t.

  21. All are excellent points and I agree with you on all of them, I think.
Especially the Uggs – I so don’t see the attraction!
I do however like the riding boots that you linked to, but will NEVER pay that much money for a pair of shoes of any kind, yet alone $100 for slippers.

  22. I agree with all your DON’Ts. I also am not a huge fan of the skinny jean. I thought I would like it, so I bought two pair. But I can not wear them for more than a few hours at a time or the circulation in my legs cuts off.

  23. HAHAHA! I don’t wear skinnies. I have a pair of straight-leg jeans that I wear tucked into boots or with ballet flats. They don’t cut off the circulation and they also don’t make you look like an ice cream cone. 😉

  24. I agree with all your views. The muppet comment? AMEN!

If my girls ask me for open toe boots, I will just die. Boots are for covering your feet, e-ver-ry single part, including the TOES! If you want your toes out, just do like the teenagers and wear flip flops year round!

  25. The plaid is not so bad, but it does remind me of the 80s style (which I would like to avoid at all costs). It wasn’t good the first time, so I’m not sure why it’s popping up again. Me, I’m staying far away from skinny jeans. And anyway, I can’t afford anything new or fashionable, so It’s kind of a moot point. 🙂

  26. I agree on everything but the Uggs. They keep you wrm in winter and cool in summer.I don’t wear them anywhere important but nice to have around for comfort and versatility.

  27. Great idea for a post – you crack me up! A friend of mine was talking about Uggs the other day, and of course, I was like, “what are Uggs?”, because I AM that out of the loop fashion-wise. So I went to their website, and I was like, “UGH”. As in, “Ugh, how ug-ly!”. And then I saw the prices – YIKES!! Seriously, are you kidding me?!?

  28. Just this morning, I saw a college student walking to class (had to stop by the campus while running errands) wearing tan uggs and tan shorts. And she was tan. I did a double take to make sure she was wearing clothing in the first place. Then, I wondered why she thinks it is fashionable to wear uggs with shorts. Why have uggs at all??? This is South Carolina, it’s not like we get snow very often. Once every 12 years maybe. And this wasn’t the first time I saw a college aged girl wearing uggs around here. They are correctly named – ugh.

  29. Okay, I’ll admit I love the boyfriend jean, but with flip-flops. And it’s starting to get too cold for that anyway. But you need to link to those straight jeans you were talking about (vs. skinny jeans). I need something to tuck into my cute boots. Oh, also any good black boots out there? I want simple ones with heels, leather, and no patent leather. For a decent price. How hard is that?

  30. Hooray for Fashion Fridays @ Musings of a Housewife! I love it when you dispense fashion advice.

In this particular article, I agree on all counts…except for the Uggs. I actually think they look pretty cute. 😉

Other items I would add to the list: skinny jeans and harem pants.

  31. Tiffany – check out Gap’s straight leg jeans (not to be confused with their “always skinny” jeans). They are fabulous! I have the medium wash and they are most certainly my favorite jeans ever.
