Fashion Friday: White Is The New Black

Nicole says: Here’s a question!  What is your favorite white shirt?  T-shirt, dress shirt, tank, etc.  I think white and denim is a classic look, but finding the right shirt can be tough.  So I’ll let you scour the internet for various options. 🙂

I say: To be honest, I have never had a classic white blouse — you know, the kind that Tim Gunn and Stacy London will say is a wardrobe staple?  Nope.  Never had one.  I love, however, a clean white T-shirt, and my latest wardrobe staple is a white tank that I wear under all my cardigans and shrugs.

For T-shirts, my all time favorite is the Banana Republic Timeless Tee.

It’s a nice weight — not too thick, not too thin, and it has JUST a hint of stretch.  They wash up well and don’t fade too much.  You can also get it in a V-neck.

I found this cute tank, also at Banana Republic, which I can’t find online at the moment.  It has a subtle embellishment around the neckline that adds just a little something special when worn under a cardigan.  Since I can’t find it online, and I’m wearing it at the moment, I’ll take a quick photo.  I’m not sure you can even see the embellishment, but for what it’s worth, here you go.

As for a crisp cotton blouse, I’m afraid I’m going to have to put that question out to the Internets.

What do YOU say? Do you have a favorite white shirt?  What kind is it?  Where did you get it?  Tell us all about it!

  1. I’ll be popping back to read the comments on this one. I am on the hunt for the perfect white tank top for summer…one that can be worn alone.

It has to be thick enough that you can’t see through it, but thin enough that it fits nicely. And don’t forget it needs to cover the bra straps and be long enough…but not too long.

    Picky, picky.

  2. Kimba, I love this one. I don’t have it in white, but I have it in orange and blue. I like that it can be worn alone and not show too much cleavage or bra straps. (It looks lowcut on the model, but I don’t think it’s too bad.)

Yes, I live in Banana Republic. Think they need a blogger spokeswoman? Paid, of course. 😉

  3. I have a lovely white blouse I got at Ann Taylor on sale recently…it is sort of a faux wrap style twith a kind of empire waist and a deep V neck, 3/4 sleeves with a bit of a stretchy cuff to hold it in place. It goes well over everything!

  4. Sarah, it sounds adorable! I can never find a wrap style, faux or otherwise, that works on me. But I love that style.

  5. I love my plan, crisp, white button down for those days when I need to wear something other than mama-gear, but I don’t have any wardrobe inspiration. I know that I can wear it with a chunky necklace and black pants and (hopefully) appear put together.

  6. I was just thinking today that I could LIVE in white shirts. Seriously, I wish my closet was full of them. I always look about 10 steps fresher with a white shirt on.

I’m actually on the hunt for a new classic button down (ordered one from BR but it was too see through) and I need to stock up on white tees (short and long). I’m currently wearing an inexpensive Old Navy one that’s perfect — long sleeve, good torso length (long enough to elongate the body but not excessively long), fitted but with some stretch/room, and v-neck.

  7. I have 4 of the same $16 white tank top from Express. They’re long and strechy and fit tight so they suck in the pudge and I wear one under EVERYTHING. Every single day. They are the best tank tops I’ve ever found. I can’t say enough good things about them. They will make you want to abandon ALL your other tank tops. Plus they have them in dozens of colors.

  8. I was just going to blog about white shirts (again). I wear white shirts a lot — sometimes Ts, sometimes camis, sometimes an actual shirt.

  9. Dare I say that I’m TERRIFIED of white?!? Really, between being a terrible klutz myself and having a messy toddler, I just think it’s impractical. I had a shirt on today that had white in it and it lasted about four hours (two of which were naptime). Maybe in another couple years…sigh.

  10. i have a ribbed white tank that goes under almost everything,a man’s white t-shirt when i want a little more coverage, a man tailored white button-down oxford cloth that doubles as a jacket over everything else (great for a quick jeans topper and when you have to wear an ugly printed t-shirt for an outing!),and yes, a crisp white blouse with lots of shaping darts and french cuffs for that “what not to wear” basic.

  11. I stopped wearing button-down shirts when I began nursing 7 years ago and never really went back.

White shirts don’t do much for my complexion, so I stick with blues, greens, and pinks.

  12. I don’t wear white much. It’s just not “my color.” I much prefer dark jewel tones or bright hues. Pastels and whites tend to “wash me out.”

On a semi-unrelated note, where did you get that orange cardigan?!? I LOVE it!
