Fashion Over 40: Daily Mom Style 06.24.15

Welcome back to my weekly post where I share what I wore this week and link up with other fashion bloggers around the web! This week I’ve had a few events to attend, and I got a new Stitch Fix, plus I’ve been doing some shopping so I have some cute new outfits to share. As I often say, I’m not a fashionista; I’m just a typical suburban mom trying to stay fabulous after 40 and sharing what I learn along the way. I hope you find some style inspiration here.

On Friday, I went to get a fresh mani/pedi, and then I met my husband for lunch at the new Grand Lux Cafe in King of Prussia. I used the opportunity to wear this new black dress.

It’s very comfortable. I wore it all day and felt great in it. It has some cute details like the kick pleats in the front, and the textured material is forgiving. My only complaint is the neckline is a bit lower cut than I’d like. I felt like I couldn’t bend over without giving everyone a show. Maybe after it’s washed, it will fit better.

I like how you can dress it up or down. I’d wear it with flip flops at the beach or out to dinner with heels or anything in between. For lunch with my honey, I wore my FitFlops and carried my green satchel.

I’ve been wanting to update my casual tops, so I placed a few orders last week. I now have a tower of boxes sitting by my front door to be returned. Yes, this is how I shop nowadays. I rarely go to the mall and try on clothes. Thank goodness for free shipping and free returns!

This pink modal and linen tee is one of my new purchases. It’s really cute and easy to wear, and I like how the vertical seam up the back adds interest. It’s got a great relaxed fit for the front tuck, and I jazzed it up with an inexpensive beaded necklace from Target.

The jean shorts are as old as the hills. I’m beginning to think it’s time to update them, but then I think, why bother? They’re still great.

The Lexi Bucket is my latest handbag splurge. I’ve been wanting a bucket bag for ages. In fact, I’ve ordered two and returned them. I think I finally found a winner, although the one in this picture isn’t the color I kept. This is the Biscuit color. When it arrived, it was more peach than the beige I was expecting, so I returned it for the Cuoio, which is now sold out. They were marked down because the colors were discontinued, but you can find them on eBay, or you can find the Lexi Bucket in its current colors on RMinkoff.com. It really is the perfect size for me — not too big and not too small.

I threw this outfit on one day last week. The days are all getting muddled together, but I think I had a doctor’s appointment that day or something. The jean skirt is my new favorite, and the striped tank is old. I wore my Superga sneakers for comfort, and because I thought they looked cute with the casual denim skirt.

My silver carryall is exactly that — perfect for carrying everything I might need for the day plus the kitchen sink. Ha! That color is no longer available, but it’s still around in the navy ikat. I have that one too; I use it when I go to the pool.

On Sunday, I wore this white linen dress that I got in my last Stitch Fix box to church and then to a friend’s baptism service. I like it in theory, but it’s a bit shorter than I like my dresses, and it gets wrinkled easily. That said, I don’t have any white dresses and I’ve been wanting one, so I expect I’ll wear it again. And I have to say, for the price, the lining fits nicely — you know how some are too long or too short; this one is perfect. It was $58.

I accessorized with the Coral Cay Earrings from Stella & Dot. These coral and sparkling glass fan earrings give you two looks in one. You can wear them as a triple chandelier as I did, or you can remove the bottom pieces for a single drop style. I think I will usually wear the single drop, but since they were the only statement piece in this outfit, I wanted to make sure they stood out. I like how they are long but also delicate. I probably could have used a long gold necklace to break up the front of the dress. I’ll try that next time I wear it.

I wore my white sandals and carried my Lexi Bucket in Cuoio (yes, this is the new color I ordered when I sent the Biscuit back.)

I wore this outfit on Saturday. We got up bright and early to work our church rummage sale, and then that afternoon we ran some errands.

I wanted to love this casual grey tank, but I know it’s not as flattering as some of my others. I don’t like how the armholes are so deep that I have to layer another tank under it. I’m hoping it will shrink up some when I wash it.

Finally, I wore this outfit to work from home on Monday. I was feeling like I needed a boost so I got myself dressed for “work.” Ha. It’s another new top, this one from LOFT. I love the twisted trim detail on the neckline and armholes so much that I also ordered it in a solid coral. It also comes in this neutral etched pattern. Right now they are all 50% off, so if you want one, grab it while it’s on sale!!

The joke was on me because after I took my pictures, I realized the top is navy and the shorts are black. OOOPS! I wish my white shorts still fit. They’d be the perfect pairing for this (ahem) navy and white top.

The black shorts are the perfect dressy short for me. I got them last summer at Ann Taylor, and they’re on sale right now for 50% off if you’re interested! They’re the City Shorts, and they have a 4.5-inch inseam. If you prefer a longer inseam, their Metro Shorts have a 6-inch inseam, and the Walking Shorts are a nice option too.

The Crescent Necklace and Alice Tennis Bracelet are both new to the Stella & Dot lineup this summer. I love their simple elegance.

  1. Love the black dress! Did you get a hair cut? We have the same cut but I have a horrible time with fly aways!!! How do you keep your hair so smooth? Hope your having a wonderful summer!

    Amber

    1. Yes, I did! I debuted it last week. 😉 It showed up about halfway through my Daily Mom Style pictures in last week’s post. I don’t have flyaways in this humidity, but it does frizz up if I don’t dry it all the way. I do the Big Round Brush thing.

  2. All your outfits look great, especially love the white dress. With respect to the fit of the black dress and grey top, you may want to take them into your local tailor and ask the tailor to shorten the shoulder straps. I have this done all the time and it really helps with the fit of clothes. Love all your posts.

  3. Of course I like the white dress—I’m always a sucker for white! I think it’s a great length for you (it’s nice to have a little variety) and besides it’s summer and you have great legs!!! I also like the new navy tank because it has some interesting details!! I can’t wait to see the coral one on you, because you look great in color! jodie

  4. You look great as always! May I ask what size your new Nordstrom tops are? I’m about to place an order and have both of those tops in my bag!

    1. Sure! They’re all mediums. The only place that I tend to wear a small is at White House Black Market. They run big compared to the other stores. My LOFT top is Medium too.

      1. Thank you so much! You are so speedy. I was hoping you would say medium as I think we are similar size and these tops look to have the perfect amount of drapy flow on you. I’ve made the mistake a few times of trying larges to get that flowy look and invariably end up feeling sloppy and blah.

Also wanted to say I am continually impressed with the way you run your blog. You are honest, ethical and gracious. Keep up the good work, I wish you continued success!

        1. Thank you so much, Annie. It means the world to me to hear that. 🙂

And yeah, it’s tempting to size up for comfort, but these drapey tops can go from cute to frump quickly if they’re too baggy.

  5. I thought about you today as I bought a camo casual skirt that is knee length. I have never bought any camo before but remember seeing you in some before. I got it at Khol’s for only $14.99 on sale. You should check it out!

  6. Your style is so cute. Reminds me of mine when I was skinny. Oh I miss those days.

BTW, Could you tell me what social plugin you use?

    Nell

    1. Oh, girl. That nasty disease isn’t going to win. You are beautiful no matter what, and I love seeing your happy smile in my Instagram feed. xo
