Fashion Over 40 | Daily Mom Style 08.10.14

mom-fashion-for-fall

It’s Wednesday, the day I join fashion bloggers around the web to share this week’s outfits. Whether you’re just trying to get motivated to ditch the yoga pants or you’re looking for style inspiration and new outfit ideas, I hope this post encourages you to try something new this week! I’m a pretty simple girl when it comes to fashion. I don’t like anything too fussy, but I like to feel put together. And at 42, I’m always trying to find that fine line between on trend and trendy. No one wants to be that ridiculous old lady who looks like she’s trying too hard, right? If I’m ever that lady, please tell me, m’kay?? So here’s what I wore this week.

I’m so in love with this top. I love the rock star vibe. I picked it up at Kohl’s last weekend when I was shopping for back-to-school clothes for my kids. I was walking by a display and a top caught my eye. I never did find it, but I found this one and snatched it right up. I love the juxtaposition of a short-sleeved sweatshirt. It’s PERFECT for this in-between weather . . . or the in-between weather that I hope to have soon! Right now it’s just plain hot. But I couldn’t resist wearing this outfit anyway.

The jeans are from DL1961. When I was in Maine, the social media manager for the brand reached out to me and inquired about working together. YOU GUYS. This is my dream come true. You know I love my designer denim and DL1961 is one of my favorites. My red jeans, white jeans and green jeans are all theirs. If they want to send me a few new pairs to style, who am I to say no to that!??

I tried to select three different styles so I have a lot of variety to work with and show you. See? I’m here to serve. Ha. These are the Florence, which is a skinny jean. I know they say skinnies are on their way out, but I’m not giving up mine just yet. The Topeka wash is dark with a hint of distressing, making them super versatile. You can dress them up or down. They also have a nice high rise and are designed to lift and shape the derriere, and I need all the help I can get back there so I’m a fan. I did, however, send these back for a smaller size. I wore them long enough to decide they were too big (and to take these photos, obviously) but they were falling down and annoying me. (I placed my order before my detox.)

Also, the ballet flats are from The Walking Company, my favorite store for stylish “comfort shoes.” I purchased these there last fall when I was struggling with the plantar fasciitis and wanted a ballet flat with some support. I tried TONS before I finally settled on these. They clearly don’t have the support of a sneaker, but they’re much better for my feet than most ballet flat styles. If you have finicky feet like I do, they’re worth a try.

Finally, THE BAG. It’s Stella & Dot’s How Does She Do It? Bag, which I ordered in pewter metallic because it will go with everything, and it’s super on trend right now. I LOVE THIS BAG. You can carry it as a tote, like you see here, and it holds a ton. There is even a pocket inside for a water bottle. (There are also slip pockets inside for keys and cell phone as well as one on the outside, which is always a bonus. I love being able to slide my phone into an outside pocket without having to wrangle the zipper.) But if you want to make it smaller, you can snap up the sides and it turns into more of a satchel. I MEAN. How fantastic is that!? It’s like having 2 bags in one.

WHEW! Y’all. That could be its own blog post, right there. Are you SURE you don’t want me to divide up these Daily Mom Style posts? Every time I dare make that suggestion, you guys revolt, but it seems like it would make more sense.

Anyway, movingrightalong.

I did to finally succumb to the heat and go back to my summery shorts and tank tops. The next day I wore my cut-offs and this racer-back tank from Old Navy. (And oh my word, it is so time for a haircut and color! I plan to remedy that TODAY, in fact. The summer sun has really bleached out my color.)

See how I snapped up the sides of the How Does She Do It? Bag?? SO CUTE, right?? That’s how I’ve been carrying it ever since.

I layered two gold Stella & Dot necklaces. I wish the arrow hadn’t gotten turned funny, oh well. I need a director during my photo shoots to look out for that sorta thing! Ha. And the bracelet is from the Sardinia collection. I’m also wearing the earrings that match but you can’t really see them. (They come apart so you can just wear the studs if you want. Pretty nifty!)

I’ll throw this photo in here to keep it real. I can’t get excited about this outfit, but it’s practical and cute for spending the day at home on a hot, humid September day. The black shorts are the ones I bought at White House Black Market when I was sizing up a few months ago, and I meant to return them because I liked the Ann Taylor ones better. These are too wide in the leg for my liking, but I figured since I never returned them, I might as well wear them. I’m not sure I’ll wear them again, though. The green tee is an Old Navy purchase from a few years ago.

The necklace is from Paparazzi. I thought it added some much needed pizazz to this otherwise simple outfit. And the bracelets are Stella & Dot.

This was Saturday. I wanted to wear my camo jeans and my favorite white tee was dirty so I started experimenting with a few different tops. I ended up with this very old lace-trim tank from the LOFT outlet. It’s still too hot for booties so I wore my Taos ballet flats again. If I were a real fashion blogger, I’d have thrown on some killer stilettos but alas, I do not live have that kind of life.

This is my least favorite it outfit from this week. I dunno, it just seems busy. I’m such a plain jane. I really prefer camo with white, black or gray on top. Oh, well, live and learn right?? We were fighting with mid-day light. Here’s another shot that got a little bit blown out but it shows the top better.

I wore my blue chevron dress to church on Sunday with my neutral wedge pumps.

This blue statement necklace is perfect with this dress. It’s not too blingy but it has the same shades of blue that are in the dress. I added a few gold bracelets and carried my brown Tory Burch Amanda crossbody.

This is a simple outfit I wore to do errands on Monday. Slightly distressed skinny jeans with a gray tee. I jazzed it up with my new Stella & Dot Monterey Necklace.

over 40 fall fashion

I was inspired by Carly to pair gray and brown so I wore a brown belt and these ballet flats that were sent to me from Cobb Hill, a new comfort shoe brand by New Balance.

They are super comfortable, with a padded footbed and they stay on without pinching my feet anywhere. This pair is the Emma. I love the color choices. They sent me almond, but the bordeaux and birch are awesome too. And there is plain black as well.

  1. I really hope skinnies are not on their way out. Shockingly, I feel like they are the most flattering style of jeans for me, even though I’m about 20 lbs more than I want to be. And I really don’t want to give up tucking my jeans into my boots, which is only possible with skinnies…what would I do with all my pretty knee-high boots? Oh well…hopefully typical American woman style will trump what “they say” about skinny jeans. 🙂

    1. Yes, I think skinnies are here for a while. It’s always nice to know when something is on its way out so we don’t invest too awfully much in them, but I will be wearing mine until they really start to look out of date.

  2. My favorite this week is the first outfit! The french terry sweatshirt is super cute and I love the color! I have the How Does She Do It Bag in the blue and white stripe and I think I’m going to need it in the pewter!

  3. I love the last outfit. I pair gray and brown in the summer and gray and cordovan shoes/boots in the fall/winter. I love the simplicity of a t-shirt and jeans. Now that my weight loss has kickstarted again, I’m digging the front tuck. It’s forgiving for my muffin top, but gives the illusion of a waist. Plus I have a cool leopard belt that I am finally able to wear again. 🙂

  4. I pray skinnies aren’t on their way out either!! I too plan to keep wearing mine for as long as I can. My favorite outfit this week is the last one. Comfy, casual, but cute and put together!

    1. They do. But you don’t need a ton. I have way too many. For real. I get overwhelmed now, b/c I could wear one of several things with almost every outfit. If I wanted to pare down, I could easily do that. I am intrigued by the people doing those capsule challenges where they select a certain # of items and wear only those for a set number of weeks. It appeals to me to simplify, but with what I do here, I feel like the variety I have is helpful. But it’s not necessary AT ALL for my daily life.

  5. Jo-Lynne.(I’m saying your name with much aggression :-)) Your least fav was my MOST fav! Love those camp’s and they look great on you with that burgundy top! So so cute!!! Maybe it’s my fav because I currently have my eye on a pair from Loft I’m just waiting on them to go on sale. Anyways…i Love all of your looks though. You look great!

  6. I really like the grey and brown together. I don’t think I’d have thought of pairing them, but it looks great! I agree with you that the outfit with the green tank is “practical and cute.” That totally is enough reason for you to include it! I understand skipping days you wore nothing but workout clothes, but for a lot of moms practical but still cute is more than they usually manage and seeing the simple outfits is less intimidating than the days you put in more effort.

  7. Congrats on your DL1961 deal! You can tell they are quality jeans. We love Maine too-didn’t get there this year though :-(. I love all your outfits this week, especially the maroon sweatshirt outfit and the gray t-shirt/brown shoes/bag outfit. They both looks that are pulled together and easy to wear.

  8. The brown top in your first pic looks really good on you. I myself has always stayed away from brown but after seeing it on you, I have the same coloring as you, I am going to give it a try

I also wanted to ask how many people on here actually spend $165 on a pair of jeans, that’s way out of my clothing budget, I’d like to get more than one pair of jeans for my monthly budget.

Yet I still really enjoy your site

    1. It is definitely an investment. But on a cost per wear basis, I feel I get my money’s worth. And they fit SO much better than anything I’ve found in the lower price ranges. That said, I understand that not everyone is willing or able to drop $165 on a pair of jeans, so I do try to give other recommendations sometimes. 🙂 Let me know if you like the brown. I, too, used to stay away from brown but now I love it!

  9. Girl, you have a banging body. I just had to say that. Everything looks so good on you. Oh and I bet your husband thinks you have a banging body too. 🙂

  10. this gal is never trading in her skinnies ever.. from a cost perspective you are so right, think how often we spend 10-60 and only wear once so if these are being worn often then the cost is reduced. and if you feel good in them you will wear them
