Fashion Over 40 | Daily Mom Style 09.02.14

Ah, September, how fickle you are. After a very mild (actually, downright cool) August, summer is back with a vengeance now that it’s September. It feels odd sending the kids back to school in 92-degrees, but these are the cards we’ve been dealt.

I’m definitely enjoying the new school day routine. I was up super early yesterday and today, like 4:30AM early. I get a headstart on my work before the kids get up, then I have time to enjoy breakfast with them and get them off to school. Then? Six glorious hours to myself! Gotta love it.

Before I share my outfits from this week, you might want to see this.

SALE ALERT!!!! The Cole Haan ‘Milly’ Wedge Pumps are 50% off at Nordstrom right now. That brings these classic pumps, the most COMFORTABLE dress shoes I’ve ever owned, down to $83.98. FOR COLE HAAN with Nike Air technology. I have these in silver and sandstone and I LOVE THEM. They go with everything from pants to dresses to jeans. If you’ve had your eye on these, now’s your chance to get them for under $100. You are welcome.

Without further ado, here’s what I wore this week. Nothing fancy. Just real style for real life.

Fashion-Over-40

I wore this outfit to my son’s band performance at the high school on Thursday evening and then again on Friday around the house. It was (obviously) before the weather turned hot and humid again. In fact, I even brought along a long-sleeved sweater, which I did end up putting on towards the end of the evening. That is how chilly it was.

WHBM white knotted tee with AG cuffed jeans The Stilt

This top has definitely turned out to be a great purchase. It’s nice to have a white tee that’s a little bit more than a tee. With the sparkle detail at the sleeves and neckline and the knotted detail at the waist, it’s cute with jeans, shorts or skirts. Hm… I haven’t thought to try it with a skirt! I bet that would be cute. I’ll have to see what’s in the back of my closet. I don’t have a ton of skirts, but I should wear them more for casual wear. It’s a nice alternative to shorts and jeans.

The jeans are my AG ‘The Stilt’ Cigarette Leg jeans, which are currently ON SALE 33% OFF at Nordstrom. Yes, still an investment, but these are fabulous jeans. I like to cuff them to give them a more summery look, but in the fall I will wear them un-cuffed with ballet flats and wedge pumps. I love that they aren’t so super skinny at the ankle, but still slimming. It’s a classic style that I should be able to wear for years, and they are so so so comfortable.

I accessorized with my Stella & Dot R Bracelet. LOVE this piece. And I carried my Amanda Crossbody because I didn’t want to have a big bag in the bleachers.

I cannot remember where I wore this next outfit. I guess I wore it during the day on Friday? I picked up this tee at the Lucky Brand Factory Outlet store last spring but didn’t wear it much because it was too tight across my tummy. After the sugar detox, it fits!

I’ve been shopping for dresses to wear in Costa Rica and Turks & Caicos (yes, I am taking TWO tropical trips this fall!!!) I don’t typically wear “resort wear” in my daily life, and I’m afraid I may be a bit out of place in my skinny jeans and t-shirts, so I’ve been trying to find a few things that I can wear down there and then still get some use out of next summer.

I ordered two of these Santorini dresses, somehow not realizing they were the same dress in two different patterns. I know, I’m a dork. I was surprised to find how nicely they fit! Because they were on a tremendous sale, I kept both. And I’ve already worn both!

I’ve always admired women who could pull off casual dresses in their everyday life. I’ve never found dresses all that comfortable or flattering. But these are perfection! And again, not to beat a dead horse, but I’m sure they wouldn’t have worked so well for me before the sugar detox. I’ve tried dresses at Athleta before and had no luck at all. So I’m finding this new casual dress thing super fun and refreshing. I wore this one (Catalina Green) all day Saturday.

This is the other Santorini dress from Athleta (the color of this one is Amalfi Blue.) I changed into it Friday night after it came in the mail and wore it to a high school football game. I felt so cute and summery wearing it. SO excited to have these 2 dresses in my rotation. Here’s hoping they still fit as well next year . . . lol!!

On Sunday, I broke out my white jeans and this blue top that was a Banana Republic purchase last summer.

Finally, I wore this on Labor Day for a get together with friends. The shorts are old, from Old Navy last year. The white tee is from Gap, also last year. I wore my Stella & Dot Rebel Pendant and Engravables necklace together and my Alex and Ani bracelets.

  1. Hi Jo-Lynne, You always look fantastic. I love your style and can’t wait to stop by and see your outfits and link up with you. I’m stopping by from the What I Wore link up to say hi. You were my neighbor. Have a great time in the tropics. Love those red shorts.

  2. Love those shorts! Beautiful on you. Morning early riser. I’m up from a cold, puking kid, and Excedrine making me wired. lol

  3. Well, I think you nailed EVERY look! I’m the same way about dresses. My neighbor was wearing one yesterday at the bus stop and it just looked so effortless and pretty.

I do the same thing- get up SUPER early to work and then get the kids off to school.

  4. Oh loving on those bronze sandals!! don’t know if i can justify that price this late in the season though!
    cute outfits…thanks for the inspiration!

  5. I am so tempted to try one of those dresses. Are they sized right? Need to go up or down a size? What do you think?

    1. They run pretty true to size. Mine are mediums. With Athleta, I can SOMETIMES wear a small, but in these dresses I’m glad I ordered medium b/c I need the room in the chest area. 🙂 It depends if you want a body conscious fit or not. And also, I wanted to make sure it was long enough.

  6. You really do know how to pull together a fantastic outfit. All of them are so “simple” and yet so complete. You must have an incredible accessories collection!

  7. I love that you wear Orthoheel sandals. I discovered them after a severe fall I took which resulted in severely torn ligaments/tendons in my ritz foot/ankle, a torn meniscus, and torn rotator cuff. Long story short, Orthoheels are my daily sandal/shoe. I only wear they pretty heels I. Sunday to church.
Thank you for being “real”. Love your style.

  8. I like every single outfit this week! I really wish there was a link to the blue eyelet top. Such a great color and love it with white! I need some white jeans!

  9. I love all of these looks. You have just the best figure! I like the shades of blue in your beautiful dress plus your shorts are the perfect length for you.

  10. Quite the variety this week! I love the green dress, too bad they don’t have my size left in stock online 🙁 I can’t say for sure how people will be dressed at the resorts you’re going to, but when I went to the Bahamas the only time I really wore anything other than shorts and tank tops was to dinner some nights. I’m sure you’ll end up wearing the dresses, but I wouldn’t worry too much that your normal wardrobe won’t fit in there.

    1. Thanks, Beth. Good to know. Since I’m going to be attending conferences, I think I’ll need to be dressed up a little more than normal. But I’ll definitely make sure to have shorts and tank tops too. I’m glad those pink and white shorts fit again – I’m assuming they’re the type of thing I’ll want for casual wear?

  11. We live in Lancaster, PA and there was an article in our local newspaper yesterday that said, “Tuesday’s high hit 90 degrees, only 8th day of 90 or above this summer”! I love all of the looks you shared this week. You do a great job of showing a complete look from the outfit to shoes to jewelry and bags. I just started my blog and linked to WIWW for the first time. I’ve followed your blog for quite some time. Would you hop on over to my blog and if you like what you see subscribe?

  12. Love all your outfits this week. Those dresses are darling. I’ve skipped over your sugar detox posts but NEED to go back and read them and do the plan myself!
