Fashion Over 40 | Daily Mom Style 09.24.14

You’ll have to forgive the quality of this week’s photos. I took most of them from my hotel room in Seattle with my smartphone, and the lighting was not conducive. You’ll see what I mean. But fortunately, I have a few that I took before I left.

Fall Fashion Over 40

I wore this first outfit one day last week to work from home and run errands. This gray top is from the LOFT, and the plum skinnies are a pair of Joe’s that I bought on sale at a local boutique. Both are a few years old so I don’t have any shopping links, but this look is easily replicable. I love this color combination for fall.

Casual Fall Outfit

I’m wearing my Tara M. moto-inspired boots that I picked up last winter at The Walking Co. I also wear an Abeo orthotic inside them to make them even more supportive — they’re perfect for what ails my feet. You will likely see A LOT of these this winter. While these are no longer available, the Tara M. Tori is very similar.

For accessories, I like how this retired Stella & Dot pendant necklace pops over this top. Because it has both silver and rose gold, I kept the mixed metal thing going with my tri-tone bangles from C. Wonder (old) and of course my MK two-tone bracelet watch. The specs are Ralph Lauren that I found at Lens Crafters.

I carried my How Does She Do It Carryall. LOVE this bag. I took it with me to Seattle, and it is perfect for travel because it can hold a ton on the airplane, and then you can snap it up like I’m carrying it here when you get to your destination and don’t need to carry as much stuff. The built in water bottle holder inside is the icing on the cake.

I wore this next outfit to meet a friend for shopping. I still love this Rock & Republic short-sleeved sweatshirt that I picked up at Kohl’s.

Rock & Republic Eagle French Terry Sweatshirt

I wore it this time with my lighter wash jeans and the same black ankle moto boots as above, but I think I like this top better with the darker DL1961 Florence skinnies that I wore with it last time. Ah well, you win some, you lose some! Also note the adorable Savannah photobomb!

So now for the crappy pictures… LOL!! This is what I wore traveling to and from Seattle. I wore my medical boot on the trip out, but I went with both sneakers on the way home. SUCH a relief to feel “normal” again. Yes, I accessorize my activewear. After all, the only thing that separates us from the animals is our ability to accessorize!

I wore this dress out to dinner the first night with the Krusteaz gang. I guess I made quite the entrance with my medical boot and one high heeled shoe. Everyone got a kick out of that. As I said, “I figure one cute shoe is better than no cute shoes.” (I haven’t been able to live that one down.) I always enjoy bringing this dress out in the early fall. The color palette reminds me of fall, but I have to wear it before the weather turns too cold. I wore my Fiona Bib Necklace, which I really like with this dress! Pardon the messy hotel room.

Ralph Lauren Dress

I wore this next outfit the day we visited the Krusteaz HQ and toured Pike Place Market. I was a tad underdressed; I wish I’d thrown on the black blazer I’d brought with me, but I knew we’d be in the test kitchen and then walking around town. I guess it worked out okay.

Embellished Tee with Dark Jeans: Perfect casual outfit for fall

Shop the look: Rock & Republic Foiled Tee // Paige Skyline Skinny Jeans // Ballet Flats // Silpada mixed stone bracelet (old) // Lakin Teardrop Earrings

I wore this the first night of the conference to the Opening Reception. I love this purple top from White House Black Market, and I haven’t worn it much. I sensed this was a casual crowd so I wore it with my dark jeans rather than the ponte knit slacks I brought with me. I wore these black wedge pumps that I got at Payless through a campaign I’m working on. They look just like the Cole Haan ones I have in silver and sand but they were a fraction of the price and they turned out to be about the same level of comfort. I’m impressed! More on that in a future post.

GNO Outfit

For some reason I failed to bring a necklace to go with this top so I wore larger earrings and a blingy bracelet that you can sorta but not really see here, lol. I wish there was a way to get better hotel room photos!

I wore this on Saturday to the conference. Pardon the ironing board and the pile of shoes on the floor!

Gray "Aluminum" Blouse with Dark Jeans

I picked up this blouse at a local boutique the day before I left for Seattle, and it was perfect for the conference. This aluminum color is one of the Pantone color picks for fall so when I saw it, I knew I had to have it. I love how the front is a blouse and the back is a comfy jersey material.

New Blouse, Side View

I wore this old Stella & Dot necklace that I had before I became a stylist. It’s perfect with this blouse. And my dark jeans AGAIN. See how versatile they are!? Love these jeans.

Finally, I wore this outfit on Monday when I was back home.

Casual Fall Style

I only went by my son’s high school to drop a delinquent folder and to the market, but I couldn’t resist wearing my new Frye boots that I bought in Seattle. They were a TOTAL impulse purchase, but the flagship Nordstrom was literally one block from my hotel and it was calling my name. I could see it out my hotel room window when I sat at my desk working, so when I had some free time Saturday afternoon, I decided to walk down “just to try them on.”

Frye Melissa Button vs Phillip Harness

I’m glad I did because I ended up with the Phillip rather than the Melissa that I probably would have ordered had I shopped online. It was a Triple Points day and I was in the moment and before I knew it, I was walking back to my hotel holding a bag with brand new boots! I like the muted color palette of the cognac boots and loden pants… perfect for fall!

Frye Phillip Harness Boots in Cognac

The gray tee keeps the look casual, but I jazzed it up with layered necklaces and a stack of wire bracelets. I kinda hate that these bracelets have become So Very Trendy, but they go with everything and I love the cool, casual vibe and find myself wearing them almost every day.

Casual chic for fall

I threw the jean jacket on when I went out because it was a breezy day.

Perfect Fall Outfit: Denim jacket + Cargo Pants + Frye Boots

Shop the look: gray tee (old) // loden cargo skinnies via Stitch Fix // Frye Phillip Harness Boots in Cognac // denim jacket (old) // Alex & Ani bracelets // On the Mark Necklace // Monterey Necklace (ON SALE!) // R Minkoff Mini 5 Zip Convertible Crossbody Bag in Ultraviolet (shown in the shopping photos)

A note about the crossbody bag: I got mine on sale at Nordstrom last summer, and the only place I can find that color now is on Amazon so I linked to that one. But there are other colors available now at Nordstrom. I also recommend looking at her Mini Mac if you’re in the market for a cute convertible crossbody bag. You are welcome!

So that’s a wrap! Trust me, you do NOT want to see what I wore yesterday, ha!! It was a day of errands and last minute travel prep so I just threw on some sweats and minimal makeup and went about my business. When this posts, I should be in a plane somewhere between here and Costa Rica. Next week will be the Daily Mom Style, tropical vacation edition! Stay tuned!!!!

  1. Ok Jo-Lynne- you may have already answered this question so if you have, forgive me. What was it about the Philip that you liked better?? I have yet to find the Philip in the Tulsa area but I did try on the Melissa. if I got Philip Id prob have to order online.

  2. Taking photos while traveling for work is always fought. Love your new boots – they are the perfect shade of brown. I bought a pair of Frye boots last year and can’t wait for it too cool down and wear them.

BTW, I host a weekly link up on Thursdays and hope that you will join me.

  3. Love your blog!!!

Any chance you might ever do a step-by-step eye makeup tutorial? Your eye makeup in the pic with the purple top looks so lovely. Please share?

  4. I have a question about your Frye Boots….I have been looking at this style on Zappos.com. I love the color of yours but on their website the color like the ones you are wearing is called Whiskey. The cognac looks darker on the site. I really love the color that you have. Is it possible that they are whiskey? Thank you…

    1. You know what? Now I’m not sure. Mine really are more brown, so my first instinct was to say that they are definitely cognac. But I am flipping back and forth, and looking at the boots, and I’m not positive. I can’t find the box. I think I stuck it in the attic for the winter so I can’t verify. And I bought them in a store, not online, so there’s no record to double check. So…. hold on. I just went over to Nordstrom (where I bought mine) and I solved the mystery. THESE are what I have: https://bit.ly/1AGncXQ I thought they were the same as the cognac at Zappo’s. I usually link to shoes on Zappo’s rather than Nordstrom b/c people tend to prefer to shop there. Who knew there were so many variations of color for the same product!???

      1. Thank you so much for your reply! I order them and love them too! You are right about the feel of the leather and the quality compared to others. Thanks again for your help! 🙂
