First Day of School

Today was a first for all three of my kids.  Due to redistricting, my son is attending a new elementary school for 3rd grade.  My 5-year-old is starting kindergarten at the same school.  And my 2-year-old (almost 3-year-old) is starting preschool.  Here they are, all spit-shined and ready for their first day of school.

Everyone was up early this morning, with typical first-day-of-school anticipation.  Even my son, who has unfortunately learned that it’s cool to disdain school, admitted he is excited to be going back.

The neighborhood kids and parents all congregated at the bus stop, and I think every adult had a camera.  I’d love to post pictures of all the kids but I don’t have permission from everyone to plaster their kids all over my blog.  You can imagine the shiny happy faces and stiff new school clothes.

When the bus came, I was happy to see our regular bus driver.  He has assigned seats, by grade level, and we waited while everyone got situated.  In her typical wifty fashion, C was the last to find her seat.  I had to laugh as I watched her wander around, looking for her name, until her brother finally pointed her in the right direction.  Even with that bit of assistance, the bus driver still had to get up and place her in the right spot.  Please pray for her teacher.  She’s going to need it.

I am happy to report that C was not the least bit intimidated about getting on the bus and going to school, so that was a small victory.  She was very apprehensive to leave me when we went to kindergarten round-up and the new student orientation.  But she stood at the bus stop this morning and said, "I’m not a-scared."  (She still says a-scared, and it’s too cute to correct.  She’ll figure it out eventually, right?)

R is very excited to go meet her new teacher in a short while.  She seems to understand that she is going to C’s old school and didn’t try to follow her older siblings onto the bus like some of the other younger siblings who were left behind this morning.  She has been asking to go meet her teacher for WEEKS, and she’s ecstatic that the magical day has finally arrived.

On that note, I better get my act together so I’m not late.  Of course, it would be a shame to ruin my perfect track record of lateness.  Perhaps I should get a 3rd cup of coffee.

  1. My son was one of those younger kids screaming b/c he wasn’t going on the bus. I hope this isn’t an everyday occurrence!!

  2. Some moms cry on the first day of school. I always feel like the meanest mom on the block because once my pictures have been taken, I shove the kids out the door and sink back in to a quiet(er) house.

Happy Back to School my friend. Is it too early for a margarita?

  3. they look adorable! (don’t tell your son that he was referred to as “adorable” – it probably won’t go over well! LOL – I am the mother of two boys)
didn’t summer go quickly? don’t know about you but school time always stresses me – right off the bat, there’s Open House Nights, homework, sports schedules, yikes! when is June coming?

  4. Adorable before school photo! We have to make sure to do all of that tomorrow for my son. He starts kindergarten. In a little while we head to a tea to get to meet his classmates and teacher.

I hope your kids have a fabulous year 🙂

  5. It is exciting for the kids and us, a little scary for both too. I still walk my daughter to school in the mornings and pick her up. She’s so timid………I’m sure she’ll get in the swing of these soon. She has found out that she does NOT like PE. LOL She likes the playing and the games but NOT the walk around the field. Poor little feet and legs. 🙁

  6. Yeah first day of school!! Boo was uber excited this morning too. Hope C has a great first day of Kindergarten!! And I think all boys disdain school, it only gets worse as they get older it seems.

  7. Awwww look at your cute crew! First day for us too…didn’t cry this year…but man, I simply cannot believe it’s FIRST grade for our duo.

Look forward to hearing the tales of your kids’ experience! 🙂

  8. They are adorable, and look very keen 🙂

Here only very rural schools have buses, and even then, not many use them. I would find it very strange not to take the kids to school myself. With my older two, usually I just drop them at the school gates, but on the first day they like me to come into the playground with them and wait for them to line up. When the youngest children (age 4 or 5) start, parents are encouraged to bring them right into the class room, for the first month or two!

  9. Every time I see your kids or you talk about them, I think, “Oh my…that could be me.” I have a 3rd grader and Kindergartner. I just can not imagine another one after Gremlin. But then I think, maybe I’m missing out on something. Then Gremlin looks at me and I realize, my hands are full with just the right amount for us.

    Thanks!!!

  10. My daughter wanted to wear the dress C is wearing to school today. I wouldn’t let her though. I’m waiting for fall and tights. And we need cute shoes too. Happy first day.

  11. Today was our first day too. It was crazy with anticipation and the morning rush (although mine are still in pre-school).

Your kids look so cute all “gussied up” for school! : )
