Flower Power 🌸

I guess I forgot to wish you all a happy first day of summer yesterday. I hope everyone is having a good weekend! We’re finally getting some nice weather, and I’m loving it.

Boden just kicked off their summer sale, and you can save up to 50% sitewide! Conveniently, I was planning to share this dress today.

This look is another great example of one & done dressing.

While I love the style of this dress, I have to say, I’m not sure about this print. For some reason, it caught my eye on the website, and it is really cute on, but the floral print could skew a tad matronly.

If you can look past that, the colors and the cut of the dress are really flattering. It also comes in a solid black.

The quality is excellent, and it runs true to size. I have the 8 regular, and it also comes in petite and long sizes.

After I shot this look, I decided I might feel more comfortable in the black, so I ordered that one and shared it in Wednesday’s try-on post. Both are really nice choices.

Because the pattern is so busy, I decided to keep this look simple with nude flat sandals and a neutral tote, and I just wore my pearl earrings with a couple of gold bangles.

For someone who rarely wears dresses, I sure am finding a lot I love this summer!

I do think this one would look better if I had it taken in just a bit through the waist. Otherwise, it’s very easy and carefree, and the black one could easily be dressed up or down for a variety of occasions.

Outfit Details:

Boden floral midi dress // Nine West slides // Everlane tote // similar earrings // bracelet

  1. I agree with you on this dress.  The black is stunning, with all the detail to make it interesting. But the print, I’m not sure.  For some reason, the waist band looks a little askew, the way the flowers line up where it’s attached…. it’s cute, but wouldn’t be a fav….  Have fun at the Yard Sale.  They are soooo much more fun when they’re not at ones own house! #beentherewontdoitagain. So excited to be heading to Maine tomorrow.  But praying the 3 year old will be good for the trip, it’s his first 6 hour ride in the car…..at least he’s riding with Mommy & Daddy, 😉

  2. In response to your comment that the print could look a bit matronly-I think it’s the length of the dress more than the print. If the dress was around knee length, I think it would look more youthful with the flat sandals. Or perhaps style it with a higher heel if you don’t want to shorten it.

  3. I’m happy to see you style this dress as it also caught my eye on their website. I like it but don’t love it because I agree with Gina P that the print is not lined up just right, and I think it sort of cheapens the look. I also think the colors seem more subdued than I expected. But I do actually like the print and would love it if the colors were a little brighter like in the Boden picture (but this could be my monitor)–their pink looks more hot pink and the red is hotter/brighter. The black is fantastic, though!

  4. Does it bug anyone else that the prints aren’t matched on the side seams? When I was taught to sew many years ago, one of the rules was to lay out the fabric before cutting out the pattern so that the plaids, prints, etc. matched up at the seams. I realize that it’s now tough to find that type of quality in fashion at a reasonable price. Since I’m a very classic, “plain Jane” type of dresser, I love you in the black version!

  5. When I click on the red/white flower maxi you showed a few days ago & list above, that particular print doesn’t seem to be on sale but the other colors are. Any idea why?

    1. Aw bummer. I didn’t realize that. Yeah, I guess it’s so popular they didn’t feel the need to discount it. Sometimes stores will discount certain colors differently.

  6. I honestly like the flower pattern in the dress.  It caught my eye because the pattern is not exactly the same all over the dress, which, to me, keeps it from looking matronly.  I’m glad y’all are having nice weather for the church yard sale.  We had a strong thunderstorm in the wee hours of the morning and we are at risk for severe weather this afternoon and I to the evening.  I hope you had a great day!

  7. I agree with you that the patterned dress looks quite matronly on you.  The black looks gorgeous on you though.

  8. Thanks to your post yesterday about Boden’s sale, I was able to take advantage of it and I am excited! I think the dress is really nice and it does not look matronly to me. 🙂

  9. I loved the dress on the website and it is cute on you, but probably not your best look.  I think it’s the length that makes the dress look matronly.  While I like the idea of the midi length, for several years the style has been shorter or maxi.  Now, when I see the midi dresses, my brain is wired to think matronly.  It’s just like switching from skinny jeans to straight leg or flares.  Trends aside, I think tall women can pull off this length better.

  11. I agree – the dress in black is much more flattering. The floral pattern and midi length isn’t as flattering. Have a great weekend!

  12. Hi Jo-Lynne, I love summer dresses like this but I agree with everyone else that the print is a bit off.  To me, it looks like it belongs on a little girl’s dress.  Wish they had other colors.  The black is sophisticated but I’m trying really hard not to buy any more black, especially for summer! xo Nipa

  13. I would love it if you would try some of the Lands End dresses. I’ve never tried them but think they look great. I so enjoy reading your posts! It has helped me in my fashion dressing. I appreciate you showing us even the clothes that don’t work. I learn just as much from those as the ones that look awesome. Which most clothes look great on you.

  14. Hmm I’m not sure what I think about this dress? The colors are pretty and very eye catching but I think it’s one that can’t be dressed down.. I know I have some dresses that are just for church because no matter what you style with them they can’t seem to look casual.. know what I mean.. it just doesn’t look like you.. the black one is much nicer .

  15. You definitely do not look matronly. A belt in a non contrasting color would define your waist which is good for hour glass figure.  Did you try a color other than nude for purse and shoes?

  16. A question on  Boden sizing.  When you note size 8, is that based on  US sizing or the UK sizing?  Thanks!
