Galentine’s Day Party Look

Greetings, and cheers to Friday! 🥂 Deborah and I are teaming up again to bring you some Valentine’s Day outfit inspiration, and today we’re each styling a Galentine’s Day party look.

Yes, you read that right. Galentine’s Day is the newest fictional holiday to hit popular culture, and I’m all for it! In fact, I just planned a Galentine’s Day breakfast with a few of my best friends.

For the uninitiated, Galentine’s Day is basically a day to get together and celebrate platonic female friendship. Here’s how it all began…

In a 2010 episode of Parks and Recreation (a show I’ve never watched, by the way… is it any good?), the main character set Galentine’s Day as a holiday that would fall on February 13th each year, a.k.a. Valentine’s Day eve. This celebration involves getting together with girlfriends for a boozy brunch… think waffles and mimosas.

Sort of like Friendsgiving, Galentine’s Day took off, and it has become the perfect excuse for women all over the country to get together with their girlfriends for brunch (or lunch or dinner…) and celebrate friendship. How can you not love that?

Today’s look is perfect for a Galentine’s Day celebration, but you don’t have to celebrate Galentine’s Day or even Valentine’s Day to wear this outfit. This is a great dressed-up casual outfit to have in your arsenal for whatever might crop up this month.

Both the jeans and the blouse are from J.Crew Factory, so they’re very affordable.

These are their 9″ high-rise skinny jean with button fly, and I’m really pleased with how they fit and feel! They’re not as soft as my favorite premium denim, but for the price, they’re a nice option.

I also love the trendy button fly. I didn’t expect to like that feature, as that’s not an area I typically want to draw attention to, but it doesn’t bulge or gap at all, and it creates some juxtaposition against the more classic blouse.

These jeans have a comfortable 9″ rise and a 28″ inseam, which is ankle length on most women. I’m wearing the size 29, for reference. I tend to wear 28 or 29 in skinny jeans, so I would say they’re true to size, or you should size up if in between.

I love how the red blouse is festive enough for Valentine’s Day, but it’s not so themed that it can’t be worn for other events as well. It actually makes a really nice work wear top or a blouse to pair with trousers for Sunday church services.

The boatneck is flattering, and it has a back keyhole with button closure and button cuffs as well. I did a front tuck because the cut of the blouse is rather boxy, and it’s too long for me left untucked.

It’s also true to size; I’m wearing a small, for reference.

To keep the look on the dressier side, I carried a black patent leather envelope clutch. I love that this bag has a gold chain that you can tuck inside or use as a shoulder strap if you want to be hands-free.

I’ve had it for years, and I don’t carry it a lot, but it comes in handy for cocktail parties and date night looks.

This bag is genuine leather, and it’s currently on sale for $44.97 at Nordstrom Rack. It also comes in a pretty beige, which is perfect for spring.

I wore black suede pumps to keep the look dressed-up and classy, but again, you have lots of options here. Black OTK boots would give it an edgier look, or black loafers would dress it down. You could even swap out the black jeans for blue jeans for an even more casual vibe and more juxtaposition.

I would probably stick with black footwear in this instance to keep a long, lean leg line, and to allow the blouse to take center stage. (If I wore jeans, I would wear my navy flats, or a taupe or nude if I didn’t have those.)

I accessorized with the same Kendra Scott filigree earrings from yesterday’s look. Again, I feel like they make just enough of a statement without competing with the other elements in the outfit.

For anyone analyzing this look for the 3 keys to an interesting outfit, you can see right off the bat that there is no completer piece. I didn’t think it needed it because the blouse (the obvious focal point) is enough to command attention. That said, you could totally put a black leather jacket or black blazer over this.

The casual/trendy button-fly jeans create some juxtaposition against the dressy/classic blouse, and the bag and shoes are both classic pieces as well.

All in all, this outfit is really about the blouse. The other elements in the outfit simply support it and let it shine.

  1. I love the red blouse! It looks festive without looking like a theme. You are right about the black keeping your look long and lean. Your legs look like they go forever. This is another fabulous look from you. Happy Galentines Day!

  2. Jo-Lynne, this is such a great outfit. Red looks amazing on you and that print is so fun! I am always a fan of pretty heels with skinny jeans, too. And yes to Galentine’s Day! I have never been one to celebrate Valentine’s Day…I have always found it a little bit cheesy so my husband and I tend to just ignore it. But I do love celebrating girl friendships! Great inspiration! Thanks for sharing!

  3. I was wondering about the button fly jeans I keep seeing. I don’t need any extra attention drawn to my mid section and I thought they might be a pain to keep unbuttoning and buttoning all day. Glad to hear you liked these, might have to give them a try!

  4. This is such a pretty outfit on you Jo-Lynne! Please keep up with the 3 ways to make an outfit interesting training. It’s so helpful and I’m a slow learner. By your sharing this each time, it’s helping to train my eye.

  5. My husband and I enjoyed Parks and recreation, we thought it a pretty funny show. If you like the Office, you will like it. Love that top, what a gorgeous color on you!

  6. What a nice outfit, that you look so good in!  That blouse is so pretty and versatile.  As much as I like the button front jeans, I think I will stick with zip up for simplicity.  We had sun and a high of 81 yesterday, but today we have lots of clouds, wind, and the chill is returning.  What a difference 24 hrs can make.  I hope you have a fabulous day!

  7. No completer piece needed…that could have been your title. I totally agree. That sweet blouse stands on it’s own. The button-fly jeans take me back to college. Fun times! Happy weekend! XO

  8. Perfect Valentine outfit without looking too cutesy.  By wearing black jeans, heels and a clutch it takes centre stage.
I bought a pair of button flys a month ago, but they are hanging in my closet. Doing the buttons  up seemed tedious but I imagine with wear they will do and undo easier. I’m going to wear them today. 😀

  9. Been looking for a pair of black denim skinny with no distressing! These look perfect! Going to give them a try! xo

  10. I have recently found your blog and have been enjoying it. I appreciate that your entries are so frequent. I am curious about the white sneakers you reviewed. I am also looking for a pair of white leather sneakers and I’m wondering if any of them had removable insoles as I wear orthotics. I already have a pair of those Taos stars in canvas and they work well but I really would like some new leather ones for spring.
    Thanks

    1. Hi Rae, some did, but I can’t remember all of them. I think the Josef Siebels did, and I’m pretty sure the Greats leather insole was removable. Those are the only ones I can think of but there could have been more. I’ve returned all but the Vejas at this point, so I can’t check them out.

  11. So cute! I love that blouse, but unfortunately that neck won’t work for me. I would like to add a little red to my wardrobe, though, so thanks for the inspiration.  That’s funny about Galentine’s Day. I though it was women getting together b/c they didn’t have Valentine’s dates. It’s fun either way. Have fun at your girlfriend gathering!

  12. That blouse is so pretty on you.  I think it’s the tone of red, similar to how pink seems to be one of your best colors.  The whole outfit is very pretty!

I followed your fashion advice last evening when we went out with friends.  I felt so put together! 🙂

  13. Super cute top Jolynne!  You should definitely feature more fun prints like this!
I think you’re right about black lengthening your legs but I also think this outfit would be cute with red heels!  I think if you keep the black heels,  maybe swap out a clutch that’s red or another color from the top?  I feel like it needs something else with color to tie it together?  Love the look though,  would be super cute for Galentines or Valentines,  but could also be adapted for other occasions!

  14. What a pretty blouse! I love the color and print, and it can transition right into spring. I also like that neckline.
My granddaughter had heard of Galentine’s Day and is planning a party with friends. I think it’s a great way for girlfriends – of any age – to get together!

  15. Love your top Jo-lynn. It is so perfect for Galentine’s day :). I love it . love the pants with it too. I love to celebrate Galentine’s day with my BFF. it is a perfect time to have a reason to celebrate.

  16. I love florals and this one is beautiful. It looks really nice with black jeans. I’d love to see you style more florals this spring and summer!
