Geo Print Shift Dress

Last winter when I did my big closet purge, I got rid of two printed shift dresses that were several years old. I had enjoyed wearing them, but bold prints are quite memorable, and it felt like time to pass them on. I figured I’d find something fresh and new this year, and sure enough, I came across this three quarter-sleeve geo print dress at White House Black Market last week.

SALE ALERT >> Tops and Pants at White House Black Market are Buy One, Get One 50% Off, plus get an Extra 40% Off Markdowns (prices as marked.) My heathered seasonless jacket is marked down to $65 (I have the size 8), and my mock neck sheath is also $65 (I have the size 6.)

I was drawn to the color combination and the bold print. It’s perfect for pairing with tights and pumps or boots this fall.

The details are what makes the dress. The deep v-neckline is flattering without being immodest, and the contrast printed trim adds interest. It also fits nicely, skimming the body without clinging, although I do recommend always wearing a slip with a dress like this.

I am sure you can find a slip that will do the job for less, but I was at Nordstrom and this Commando Fitted Slip was suggested to me, and I love it. I actually have the M/L and it works fine, although the S/M is probably the right size. I have no recollection why I bought the bigger one. I like that it isn’t too fitted, though. It isn’t supposed to be shapewear; it’s just supposed to keep your dress from clinging to the wrong places.

The dress makes a bold statement on its own, so I kept everything else simple — black tights, black suede pumps, and a black handbag. I LOVE these tights, by the way. They’re by Spanx, and they are fantastic. They hold everything in, and they’re opaque.

My Stuart Weitzman pumps are old, but these Nine West pumps are similar, and these Sam Edelemans are very pretty. I actually have the Sam Edlemans in pink, and they’re quite comfortable to walk in.

I added gold jewelry to coordinate with the gold hardware on the bag. I just wore a simple engraved disc necklace, so I went a little bolder with the teardrop earrings, and I wore my Becker Cuff since the three quarter sleeves are perfect for showing off a bold bracelet.

This makes a great outfit for a work event, dinner out, or even church on Sunday.

To bring it down a notch and show how it could also be office appropriate, I also styled it with my tall black leather wedge boots. I really prefer it with the pumps, but I know that I’ll probably be more comfortable wearing it with booties or boots since most of my venues are pretty casual.

These boots are old, and I can’t decide if it’s time to replace them or not. I would feel a little too “Pretty Woman” to wear black OTK boots with this outfit, so I think a knee-high boot is more conservative, but maybe booties would be more modern… I can’t decide. My black booties are too casual for this dress, so maybe I need to invest in a dressier pair.

By the way, I had my nails done this week, and a lot of times y’all ask about my nail color. I went with this really pretty CND Rubble. It’s brown, but it has cool undertones, which work well for me. I’m wearing the Shellac, but it also comes in Vinylux, which supposedly lasts a week and dries super fast.

So which is your favorite version of this outfit — with pumps or boots?

  1. I love this this print looks like it would hide a multitude of sins!!! Pumps definitely, but perhaps a suede boot?? Love it!! Happy birthday to your youngest!

  2. I truly think both the pumps & boots are perfect with this. The print is definitely the focal point so I don’t think you can go wrong with either. I bet even the OTK boots would be great–because you’re not really going to notice them much!!
So glad to see you in a dress—it looks magnificent!!

  3. Really cute !it looks so much longer on website !think it would b too short on me at 5’9″.looks super on you !I like both looks ,just depends on what mood you r in ????

  4. I’m not sure which of these I like best, I think they both look equally fab. Dressy black booties would be perfect too like you mentioned. I don’t typically notice dresses often, but this one immediately caught my attention. Love the trim and the way you styled it!
Happy Birthday to your girl! Hope it’s a great one!

  5. There is something about black tights and heels with a dress that just looks amazing. The boots look really good too! Love the whole outfit.

  6. When I was working at the TV station dresses like this were my go-to. SOOOOO easy, polished and they looked good all day b/c they never got wrinkled. Kind of timeless too. I have some from a few years ago that still look just as good! They are also wonderful for packing because they just roll up.

  7. Love White House Black Market. They run a lot of Sales! I think the heels look the most dressed up. But on a cold winter day I would pick the boots for warmth ????

  8. Oh I love this print. I bought this a few weeks ago at WHBM, and the sales associate at the store actually told me it was not meant to be a dress, that it’s a tunic to be worn over leggings! I personally think you should be able to wear it either way. If I had sized up it was long enough to wear as a dress, and I could picture it wearing just like you are, with tights. However, I sized down so that it was a little shorter and am wearing it with leggings. Either way, great choice!

  9. This dress is stunning! I prefer the pumps, but really like the boots as well. I think it really depends on where you’re wearing it. I love it styled with tights.
I hope your daughter has an amazing birthday.

  10. I, personally, hate the OTK boots. Pretty Woman is the only thing I think about when I see them. I think the dress looks great with the knee high boots. I like it better than with the pumps.

  11. Oh my goodness! A stunning look on you, for any occasion. I like both versions equally, just depends on where you’re going! Can I add a wow as well? Happy birthday to your daughter! It’s birthday week as well in our family. Nephew & Uncle today. Our older daughter’s is tomorrow and the younger one is Wednesday. Two years and a day apart! Then another nephew on Thursday. Back in the day, we were always broke after birthday week!

  12. I love it! It’s such a fresh print. Wearing it with tights allows the shorter length to still be, dare I say, modest. I love it best with the pumps but the boots make it just a bit more edgy and casual. Add your black leather jacket and your working it for date night. Lol

  13. Beautiful dress. Both options work; however, pumps look more refined.

I’m a newbie to running. I’d appreciate any advice.

  14. Both looks are cute, but I prefer the pumps. I love the dress and you’re right…prints like that are memorable which is a double edged sword. I’ve got one and feel like I can’t wear it anymore because I’ve worn it a time or two for 2 years. ;,(

  15. Thanks for the Thanksgiving wishes! Blue Jays one step closer to the World Series and our home town Stampeders football team is on a tear as well! Woohoo! Lots to be thankful for. 🙂

That dress is beautiful on you and I love the color and pattern.

My son is turning 16 in November and will be getting his drivers license. I agree – where does the time go!

Hope your fall is great and keep up the great work.
