Give a girl the right shoes, and she can conquer the world…

And with no further ado, I present to you… my new red ankle boots!

These boots came in my last Trunk Club box, and I knew the second I saw them, they were going to earn a spot in my closet. I have so many neutral boots, but nothing in a bold color. Red is one of my favorite ways to pop a neutral outfit, so these boots were meant to be mine.

They have a rather high, narrow shaft, so they’re hard to wear with skinny jeans. If I cuff them above the boot shaft, it shortens the line of the leg, and if I try to tuck the jeans into the boots, they get bunchy. After trying those options without much luck, I decided pairing them with straight or bootcut leg pants is my best bet, so I styled them with dark wash bootcut jeans, a black tank, and a taupe moto jacket for a fun fall date night look.

We’ll talk more about those booties in a minute, but I also want to mention this lace trim tank. Believe it or not, this piece is from Stella & Dot. Yes, they have clothes now!!! Actually, they’ve had clothes for a while, but I hadn’t ordered any until now. I love this top for so many reasons.

Basically, it has the dressier vibe of a cami with the comfort of a tank top. The straps are wide enough to cover a regular bra, and it doesn’t dip down low in the back, so it feels more modest than some camis that I’ve tried.

I also prefer this fabric to the silky cami fabric because it drapes nicely, which I find to be more slimming. For size reference, I’m wearing the small, and it’s a little big on me. I’m hoping it shrinks up some in the wash, but I didn’t dare exchange it for an XS.

This jacket is from last year, but they have a new version for 2018 that I really love. I shared in my newsletter yesterday that my daughter tried it on at the mall the other day, and she fell in love with the burgundy. It also comes in a brown and a tan.

The collar of the new one is really nice — it’s collarless in the back and then has the notch collar on the front, giving it that moto vibe without all the bulk in your neck.

For size reference, I recommend sizing up in this jacket if you run in between sizes because I wear the medium.

I love how the red boots pop against the rest of this neutral outfit. Look at the heel on these… I love the shape, and I’m glad they covered the heels with leather rather than doing a stacked heel. Also, they’re 3 1/4 inches, so not as high as some.

I did size up half in these — or that’s what my Trunk Club stylist sent me, rather. I usually wear size 8 in Vince Camuto booties, but I think with the pointy toe, the 8 1/2 is the better fit in these. I will also have to wear socks with these, because the shaft is kind of stiff, and they hurt my shin as I walked. I’m sure socks will solve that, and they will help keep me warm too, so bonus!

The jacket has silver hardware, so I wore my silver Kendra Scott diamond shaped drop earrings from the #NSale and a Stella & Dot charm necklace.

My jeans are from Express, so they’re a great price, and I really like the fit too.

Finally, I carried my black satchel with the silver hardware, although I really like the idea of this handle clutch for this going-out look.

  1. I absolutely love red shoes❤️.  My closet has had some sort of red shoe for the last 20 yrs… love this outfit!  Our weather has been crisp and cool the last few days.. lover fall!

  2. I love this look on you!  I think your daughter really needs that jacket for Christmas. Then you can style it for us. Those booties! My friend has red cowboy boots and I’m going to send her this post. She’ll love it! It’s beginning to be a little cooler in MO and I love your fall style series. I think see a little shopping on my day today.

    1. I don’t have the right dress, but that’s a fun idea. Although this particular pair is really stiff and the top of the shaft cuts into my leg as I walk, so I need to wear socks that come up higher than the boots. Not sure tights would be enough of a barrier, and I’m not even sure I’d like them with tights… I definitely want to get some cropped straight jeans in a darker wash to wear with them.

  3. Jolynn, Last weekend my husband and I were in Nantucket at a wedding. I wore my red UGG shoes that you introduced to me during the N sale. Three different people stopped me and complimented my shoes. I love those shoes! It makes me think I may need to get red boots!

  4. Beautiful and classic! Those jeans look great on you! I ordered 2 pair of Express jeans on sale about a month ago (black and dark denim). They are a great fit and so slimming!

  5. Hi Jo-Lynne
This is a really sharp outfit on you! I too love red boots. Do you think that wedge booties are still on trend? I have some red suede ones? Love the jacket you are wearing too. Checking out that link for sure! Thanks!

    1. Unfortunately, I don’t see much out there in a wedge. That kind of died a quick death, didn’t it? They were really popular there for a while. That said, if you have some that you love, I would still wear them.

  6. One more question— I see someone else mentioned cowboy boots? Seems I saw something about that trending too this fall? Thoughts on how to use cowboy boots without looking too country westernish?

    1. Just wear the cowboy boots with everything! We wear them with skirts, skinny jeans (tucked in), and bootcut jeans, of course I live in Texas….so take that with a grain of salt!

    2. Western-inspired styles are definitely trending. I think cowboy boots are a classic… Paige is right, they go with so many things, but there is a knack to wearing them with the right styles so they don’t look too country. Also, I think in Texas you can definitely get away with more of a that than in other areas. I would try to pair them with more classic styles to offset the Western vibe.

  7. Cute outfit. BTW, unrelated, but I have been carrying that tan Topshop tote with the tortoiseshell handles a ton since it arrived! I asked my boyfriend yesterday how much he thought it cost and he guessed, “$500?” HA! Have a great day!

  8. Super cute! I wish I could wear high heels like that. You’ve inspired me with the red booties. I am lookin at a flat pair…not sure it they’re as pointy as yours, which I think it important to get the right look with boot cut pants.

    1. I agree, I like a pointed toe with bootcut jeans — especially in a flat shoe. But it also depends on your height and body proportions. If you’re long-legged or tall, a more rounded toe could work.

  9. Why not pair the boots with skinny cropped pants?  Or baby boot flair cropped ones?  Although I do like the long line of the boot cut jeans.  Can’t say I love that cami tho–the finishing doesn’t appear that terrific, and it looks like it will pill very quickly.  Curious to see how it holds up.  Sorry to be negative, because overall I like the outfit styling!

  10. Love the bootcut look! Hate the fact that Express doesn’t list the rise in inches or the inseam in inches on the product details. How’s a girl to know?

  11. You rock those boot cut jeans. I have only skinnies and I’m so over that look. That whole look today looks so on trend. Nice job.

  12. I’m loving those red shoes! The heel is spot on trend. Boots with a high shaft look nice with a dress. Have you tried that? I’d love it if you styled them that way so we can see another option other than bootcut. Having said that, I’m all about the bootcut this fall. I just bought bootcuts in black and dark wash. I love the slimming effect. 😉

  13. Love your red boots!  I am contemplating buying a pair of fun colored shoes.  We are finally getting some rain.

  14. Great boots! Wish I could wear such high heels! These boots need to be shown, not hidden under bootcut jeans. You do wear them well.

    1. I have most things in separate compartments, so moving things is easy, but I don’t change every day. I probably change a few times a week, depending on where I’m going. I carry my LV tote probably 50-60% of the time.
