Good Morning from Maine!

I was up super early this morning and planning to write a long, newsy email about our vacation so far, but then I got distracted editing my Facebook page (they’re rolling out a new design that I really like!), reading a news article, and updating my newsletter subscription pages, and suddenly it’s time to get ready for church. Isn’t that always the way???

Before I do that, I’ll share a few pictures from our trip. My husband has been taking tons.

We left last Friday and drove to Massachusetts where we stayed for a few nights with family. Then we made our way on up to Maine on Sunday, where we always stay at my family’s place on a lake near the Bar Harbor area. My mom was here to greet us, and my dad joined us a few days later. It’s been fun catching up.

The views are stunning. I love sitting here in the house, looking out at the lake and listening to the loons. Here are some pictures my husband took one night at sunset. That’s our house over there on the right.

The adirondack chairs are a new addition this summer, and we love sitting out there enjoying the view.

The girls love playing on the rocks.

We’ve spent most days right here by the lake, but we did drive down to Bar Harbor on Friday to go on Diver Ed‘s Starfish Enterprise. It was really fun. He takes groups out on a boat in Frenchman’s Bay, where he puts on a wetsuit and scuba gear (and explains it all to us as he’s getting suited up) and dives down into the ocean and brings up sea creatures to show his audience.

He’s a bit of a nut, and the kids are all invited up to see and touch the animals. My girls even got in on the fun once they warmed up to the idea. My son, at 16, is way too cool to go up and hold the animals, but he enjoyed the show.

Afterwards we ate lunch in Bar Harbor, and then on the way home we stopped at the Trenton Lobster Pound to pick up live lobsters to make for dinner. The girls always get a kick out of that.

Other than that, we’ve been pretty lazy. The kids love to ride on the Bandwagon. I go along reluctantly to spot. I’ve always had to fight my natural inclination to fear the motorboat. I know it’s probably safer than driving a car on the highway, but it just feels so vulnerable. They have a great time, though, and it’s worth it to see them enjoying the water and each other without an electronic device in sight. Ha!

This morning we’re heading into town to church, and then I think Paul and I are going out to dinner this evening. We always try to fit in a date night while we’re up here and my parents are available to watch the kids.

I hope you enjoy the rest of your weekend!

We are always looking for great places to stay when we return and A lake sounds great….ha, i have never considered it because we usually hike….but for a longer stay it would be great !

    1. My parents own this house. It was my grandfather’s first so we’ve been coming here for years. I love lake vacations. We rented a lake house in the Poconos a few years ago and it was so fun. 🙂

      1. I am also in Maine with my sister and girlfriends. We are staying in Rockland. We love it here. We also went to Jordan’s Pond House it was fabulous . I can’t wait to come back again. This is my 6th time to come. I so wish I owned a house here so I could summer here. Texas is hot!!! But I will have to wait until I retire and boys graduate… Love your blog!!!

  3. I grew up in Nova Scotia, Canada. So very much like Maine. The views are wonderful and your husband has the eye for a good picture.
Isn’t it great to see the kids enjoying the great outdoors and leaving their devices alone, if only for a short time.

  4. Looks like a lovely place for a vacation. Did your husband use a app for the landscape pictures? They have almost a 3D effect. Have a nice Sunday!!

  5. What beautiful pictures & great memories for your children. How special to have 4th generation family members staying there. We spent our honeymoon in Bar Harbor, Maine (1974), but had never returned. For some reason, we picked Cape Cod & ending up spending close to 12 years vacationing out on Cape. About 10 years ago, we headed back up to Maine & fell in love with it all over again. There is something magical about the Maine coast! I do like where we live here in the North Pocono area of Pa, but if I ever thought about moving, Maine is where I’d head! Such a relaxed slow way of life. Enjoy your time there!

  6. My hubby and I visited Bar Harbor last October. Just a gorgeous place! Enjoy your time there. What wonderful memories your kids will have!

  7. What a fantastic eye your husbands has! His pics rival the professionals you would find in the art galleries. My husband and vacationed up near Bar Harbor a year ago last fall and thought the scenery was spectacular. BTW isn’t Marion the sweetest little town? (We live 2 towns over)

  8. Wow, we are traveling this weekend too, but our views are no where near this insane. I would love to be sitting in that chair with a glass of wine. That picture your husband took could be in a travel magazine!

  9. What a stunning family home and area to visit! Great job on the photos! It sounds like y’all are really enjoying yourselves, which is what it’s all about. We’re still in the thrust of going through everything we own, preparing for our upcoming move. The closing is on 8/26, so we have to keep at it.

    Have a blessed week!

  10. Love the pictures. I’m sitting by a lake right now in the Muskokas (Ontario, Canada). I’m amused by the fact that up here we call the chair that you are sitting on a “Muskoka chair”.
