Hello from Arizona!

It’s as beautiful as I remember. Everything got off to a great start. Our travel down was fairly uneventful, the resort is gorgeous, the weather is perfect, and everyone was in good spirits.

We got in late Tuesday night, and yesterday we enjoyed breakfast with a view before we settled down by one of several swimming pools on the property. I love how they have an adult-only pool for those who want peace and quiet, and another large fun pool for the kids with activities and a water slide.

Unfortunately, our fun trip has been overshadowed by illness.  My son started to feel unwell on the plane. Yesterday he hung out by the pool for a bit before returning to our room. We went on to tour Taliesin West (AMAZING, by the way!) and left him to rest, hoping he could sleep it off and would feel better, but we had to cancel our dinner plans and come back because he was feeling worse. He has a fever, and all he can do is lay in bed and sleep. This morning we took him to an urgent care clinic, where they diagnosed the flu.

To say I’m disappointed is a huge understatement. I feel so badly for him and everything he is missing out on, and I’m worried others of us will get it. We had to “drop back and punt” as my mom used to say. We decided to cancel our reservations in Sedona and stay here in Scottsdale for the duration of our trip. It’s a lovely resort, and if I have to be stuck somewhere, this might as well be it. We will have to take the kids to see the Red Rocks and the Grand Canyon another time.

I haven’t had time to upload pictures yet, but here are a few from my phone.

Taliesin West was simply amazing. Frank Lloyd Wright is such a fascinating man.

And our resort isn’t shabby either.

I will definitely post some more here when I get a chance to upload and sort through them. Right now I’m pretty distracted with everything going on with my son. Meanwhile, you can follow me on Instagram if you want to see more pictures throughout our stay. Hopefully the rest of us can stay well and enjoy it.

  1. So sorry to hear about your son:( that’s always a worry when we travel … Hope he feels better and the rest of you stay healthy!

  2. Oh no, prayers that he will feel better soon and that the rest of you avoid it. Sedona is one of my favorite places on earth, so I’m sorry you’ll miss it, but it definitely warrants another trip on its own when you can all enjoy it.

In the meantime, have a cocktail and enjoy the beautiful resort you are at!

  3. Oh, no, Jo-Lynne! My heart just fell when you said he had the flu! Of all things! All you can do is try to make the best of it!

  4. So sorry to hear about your son! We also recently experienced that while on vacation, and my heart goes out to you, your son, and family. I spent 2 days with a sick son in a very small hotel room, so at least you all are at a nice resort?? Hang in there.

  5. Don’t lose hope, if the stars align and everyone feels well later in the week, it is possible to make a day trip up to the Grand Canyon. Regardless, hope you enjoy the rest of your trip!

  6. Found your blog through Une Femme d’un Certain Age and love it! We had a drag of a Mexico vacation 2 weeks ago due to the same thing!! One child and then the other fell ill and then my hub! Make sure to have everyone wash hands as much as possible and push those fluids! Dehydration is such an insidious thing and good luck to all of you.

  7. Oh my goodness, I’m so sorry! Hope he’s feeling better soon & no one else gets sick. My parents live near Scottsdale – at least you’re stuck in a beautiful place!

  8. So sorry to hear your son is sick! My husband and son (who is 17) had a weird bug when we were in Az a couple of weeks ago. Luckily after a couple of days they were much better, and my daughter and I never got it – praying this is the case for all of you.
Not to make light of the illness, but if you are looking for a fun place to shop, try Last Chance at 19th and Camelback. Often lots of Uggs, (only $60 a couple of weeks ago), plus many other bargains. But make sure you look everything over well, as most of the items are Nordtrom returns and might have flaws. Really good Nordtrom Rack across the street by Whole Foods and Trader Joes.

  9. I’m so sorry about D – I really hope he feels better soon. Sucks to be on vacation – at least the fresh warm air will hopefully help?

  10. So sorry to hear your son is sick. We just returned from Florida and my two sons and husband all had a round of the stomach flu. We still managed to have a nice time but is was so awful in the moment.

  11. For goodness sake I hope they prescribed tamiflu for him AND for all of you…it really works to shorten the duration of the flu and to prevent it developing in you…but the sooner it is started the better it works.

  12. I am sorry to hear about your son being sick. Praying that he gets to feel better soon, and you guys enjoy the rest of your vacation. Beautiful pictures!

  13. So sorry to hear that your son is sick!! It sounds like you are making the best of the situation:) Hope he starts to feel better soon and everyone else stays healthy!

  14. What a bummer 🙁 Hopefully he’s feeling a little better now. But, I’m glad you can enjoy my beautiful city of Scottsdale. I love it here and there are so many incredible things to see and places to eat even if you can’t make it up to Sedona and the Grand Canyon.

  15. Thanks for sharing your beautiful trip. Well wishes for your son. We’ve vacationed with a sick child, and did not enjoy anything, as we knew he wasn’t feeling it. (read: Mom Guilt) Kudos for making the most of your stay.
