Hello from NYC! #CoffeeTalk

Well, we made it. It’s been a whirlwind so far. I’ve been wanting to take my girls to New York City for AGES. They’ve never been, and every time I come up here, they’re intrigued to hear about the train and the hotels and the cabs and all things city. So we finally made plans for this weekend. My mom was able to come up and join us, and I’m so thankful for her because with my bum foot, I’d never have been able to do this alone. Plus, it’s SO much more fun to be here with her.

Yesterday we hopped a train out of Hamilton, New Jersey and arrived in Penn Station just in time for lunch. We had tickets to see the Rockettes at 1PM so there wasn’t much time to spare. What we weren’t counting on was how much traffic there is here this time of year. The cabs were all full, we called Uber but because the traffic was moving so slowly, they couldn’t get to us in a timely manner, so we took off walking. Or, in my case, hobbling. It wasn’t quite a mile, and we were quite literally moving faster than the cars in the street, and we were still a little bit late. We fell into our seats just as the show was winding up.

It was absolutely fantastic. I’ve never seen it and had no idea what to expect, but it is certainly worth all the hoopla. I was bummed that I didn’t get any pictures. Every picture we tried to take was dark or blurry, and it was just so crowded, there really wasn’t room to get anything good. I did manage to snap this one of my daughter as we approached Radio City Music Hall. My apologies to the patriotic American walking down the street who got caught in the crossfire.

As we were leaving Radio City Music Hall with the crowds pressing in on us, discussing how we were going to get back to the hotel, one of those guys on a bike with the people carrier behind him motioned to us. Without thinking twice, we hopped in.

He took us back to the hotel in style. It was really a great way to see the city. But when we arrived at the hotel, we discovered the ride costs $5 a minute. A MINUTE. And you guys, a New York Minute is NOT fast at the holidays. It took him 12 minutes to drive us one mile. So you can do the math.

From there on out, we called Uber for our ride.

We got to experience American Girl Place for dinner, and that was DEFINITELY an experience. I sure wish I’d come up with THAT idea for a business model before they did.

This morning we’re taking our time getting up and trying to decide how to fill our day before we see Matilda on Broadway tonight.

The biggest challenge is definitely working around my temporary disability. It’s every bit as frustrating as I thought it would be, but I wouldn’t trade this experience for the world. This will definitely be a trip to remember.

  1. I’m going to NYC on Monday for work. I want to hit the East Village and find the Jennifer’s Way bakery. It’s the gluten free bakery opened by Jennifer Esposito after she was diagnosed with Celiac Disease.

  2. So fun!! Glad you’re having a great time in spite of everything. 🙂

We were in the fourth row for the Rockettes last week, so I got a TON of photos & videos. LMK if you’d like any of them!

  3. How fun! My hubby took me to NYC in December a few years ago – and it was such a wonderful trip. Would love to go back with my boys, but it’s quite a trek from Seattle. Have a great weekend!

  4. This is making me so excited! I’m heading to NYC in January to visit my daughter and do New York for a weekend. Can’t wait!

I also can’t wait to hear what you thought of Matilda. I saw it in London last summer and loved it. I think I’ll try to get tickets for NY in January.

  5. We were in the city on Saturday too. All the Santas were crazy! I loved being up there, even though my two boys were constantly picking at each other. This is our third year going, and I definitely can see why people love going to the city at Christmas. Just wish we would have had time to get cupcakes from Crumbs!

  6. We are winding up our NYC trip. We just saw the Rockettes tonight and it was amazing ! Les Mis was my absolute favorite though. We went to Chelsea Market and I have to say..if you are a foodie this is THE place for you! So many amazing shops with unique foods. Have you ever been ?
