Holiday Cocktail Party Outfit #MomsDoHolidayStyle

Hello friends! Welcome back to 25 Days of Winter Fashion! Today I’m excited to share a holiday cocktail party outfit, and I’m also joining a bunch of fashionable friends for a Moms Do Holiday Style series to bring together our favorite holiday looks.

What to Wear for New Year's Eve: Gold Dress with Black Tights and Black Suede Pumps

This metallic knit sheath would be great for a company holiday party or any other winter party you may need to attend that requests cocktail attire, but it really makes me think of New Year’s Eve. Either way, it’s figure flattering and comfortable too. I always like a dress with the ruching on the side.

On the Nordstrom website, it says it runs large, so I ordered a 6, and it fits perfectly. I’m often an 8 in dresses, so I would agree that it runs a bit big.

I accessorized with these mixed metal chandelier earrings from my Stella & Dot boutique. They make a great statement, and they’re large enough to show even if you have dark hair. I also wore a stack of bangles that are super old. They were also really inexpensive, but they come in handy at the most random times. I like how they are delicate even though they make a nice statement. I think I got them at Francesca’s many moons ago, but this set at Target is similar.

I decided to wear tights and suede pumps with this dress. I like the heavier look of the tights with the deep metallic tones in the dress, and it’s a more modern look that pantyhose. If I were going to a more formal event, I might opt for sheer black hose (charcoal) and pointy-toe pumps.

Another option would be black or gold dress sandals, but then you have to either do toe-less pantyhose or bare legs. If you live in the south, that might work for you, but here in the northeast, I think hose or tights make more sense and look nicer too at this time of year.

I wanted to carry a gold clutch, but I realized that I donated mine. D’oh! Sometimes I get a little carried away with my closet clean-outs. Instead, I opted for this black patent envelope clutch. It works okay because there are some darker tones in the dress, but I still think a gold bag would be nicer with this because you carry your bag close to your dress, and it would blend better and not stand out against the dress. (Does that make sense?? It IS possible that I’m over-thinking this. It’s been known to happen.)

I also like how this bag has a gold chain so I can put my purse on my shoulder and hold a drink in one hand and a tasty nibble in the other. I hate juggling a clutch and a drink while trying to eat at a cocktail party, so I always look for clutches that have a strap option.

Since it gets pretty cold here in Pennsylvania this time of year, I’ll need something over this dress. A black wool dress coat would be nice, or if you want to invest, a faux fur shrug would be perfect.

If I had a dressy New Year’s Eve party to attend, I would totally wear this outfit, but for my husband’s work holiday party this weekend, I think I’m going to opt for the cold shoulder dress I styled back in October. I love that it has long sleeves because I’m always cold, and I really want an excuse to wear those pink suede pumps!!

P.S. The dress is back in stock in all sizes!!!

  1. Ahhhh….you really know how to make me smile, Jo-Lynne!! Another dress—and look at how fantastic it looks on you!!
I love the metallic material, and that shaping makes you look divine!!
Have fun at the party this weekend.
I know what you mean about being cold…I always laugh that the women have sleeveless dresses on and the men have shirts AND a jacket! It seems like it should be the opposite—ha ha

  2. Jo-Lynne, I too really like the style of the dress. I bet you will get a lot of wear out of it.

Has your new carpet been installed yet?

  3. Jo-Lynne – what will you wear on your legs with the cold shoulder dress and the pink pumps? I am looking for inspiration for a holiday party with the same color combination! THANKS!

    1. I’ve already started applying self tanner, lol!!! I may go bare, but it looks like it’s going to be quite cold so I may have to wear hose. I’ll do verrrry sheer nude hose if I do. I was actually thinking of ordering nude fishnets, but I don’t want to pay for rush shipping, lol.

  4. Jo-Lynne this is absolutely stunning on you!! I hope you get a chance to wear this somewhere. I also get carried away with donating, but the black clutch looks perfect. 🙂

  5. That dress is to die for! I wish I was going somewhere fancy to wear it! Looks amazing on you! Love the tights as well!

    1. Oh, no! I do not keep everything. 🙂 I couldn’t possibly. I actually return some things — if I just try them on for 5 minutes in the front yard. I donate a lot and I give some to friends. I’ve sold some before too, but that is time consuming. I have a separate clothing rack for clothing I’m going to style and a lot of it never makes it to my closet.

  6. Hi Jolynne~
I’ve recently ‘found’ your blog and I love it! I was wondering if you could do a post on just where to begin in putting together clothes that can go with one-another (if that makes sense). I seem to have a closet full of clothes with truly nothing to wear and I really admire those ladies that can mix and match so well – how do they do it??? Someone said it’s called a ‘capsule’ but I haven’t been able to find ‘capsule’ in my searches and thought you may know or could maybe give some advice/direction. It would sure save on spending money on TONS of clothes, but they only go with the particular outfit that was just purchased (hope that makes sense!) I will keep my fingers crossed that you will consider doing a post on this after your 25 days of winter!
PS I’m really enjoying your 25 days of winter posts!!

    1. Hey Tina, I do hear ya on this! I actually experimented with a capsule wardrobe after Christmas last year. I can see how it would be appealing if I weren’t a fashion blogger. I loved how everything went together, but it did take some planning, and because I already had so much, it was fairly easy for me to put things together that worked. I got rid of a TON of stuff, and I’ve tried to be more selective since, but the nature of my job does create a need for more variety than most. 🙂 You can see the series here: https://jolynneshane.com/?s=capsule+wardrobe

  7. so pretty! I love this dress! I like pantyhose or tights for this time of year. this dress would be pretty with 3/4 sleeve as well.
thanks for all the ideas. 🙂

  8. I have a reception/New years Eve event in the cold northeast and I chose that black cold shoulder dress. It will be freezing so I am wearing black tights and booties which I hope will be OK with it. What do we wear for a necklace???

  9. You look so glamorous, JoLynne. I love the tights with the dress. My husband’s company Christmas party is two weeks from Saturday. I was going to wear very sheer black hose, as it’s been very chilly. However, I’m ordering the tights you’re wearing. Thank you so much for helping us all with styling issues! 🙂

  10. Stunning outfit, you look great! I also like that you have a variety of ways to style your hair. Could you show a picture of the back of your hair when you wear it up? I like to pull my hair back sometimes, and I would love to see what you use, hair clips, barrettes, etc. Thanks!

  11. Jo-Lynne, you look fabulous in the dress as always, the black tights and clutch ties everything together. Thanks
for sharing. Do you think that this dress is suitable to wear to a mid January wedding?

  12. Love your outfit!! It’s so cute and sexy! While I probably would have worn the sheer black hose, I do love the look of the tights and they look amazing with the suede pumps.
