Holiday Party Outfit: Classy with Side of Edgy

Okay, so I had no idea what to call this outfit, but I think Classy with a Side of Edgy sums it up rather nicely!

Holiday Party Outfit with Coated Denim & Burgundy Suede Lace-Up d'Orsay Pumps

Welcome back to 25 Days of Winter Fashion! I’ve had these burgundy suede lace-up d’orsay pumps for a while, and I’ve been meaning to style them for the blog, but I kept getting sidetracked. I’ve worn them a few times, and they are super fun because the color is gorgeous and the styling is a little bit different.

I love a lace-up pump for several reasons. It’s fun, for one thing, but it also helps the shoes stay on your feet. Bonus!!! If you have a hard time walking in heels, lace-up pumps are a great solution. (These also come in grey and black.)

I wore them to church a few weeks ago with bootcut jeans and a classic grey cowl neck sweater, and they worked great, but for this post I wanted to dress them up for a holiday outfit. I love this outfit because it would work for so many occasions around the holidays — a casual office holiday party, a festive Christmas gift exchange with good friends, dinner with your honey, or even a holiday lunch with the girls.

The black coated denim is chic and edgy, but the classic sweater keeps it from being overtly sexy. I finished off the festive outfit with blingy earrings and a red lip.

I ordered these black coated denim pants when DL1961 was running a 50% off sale over Thanksgiving weekend, and they are the perfect way to turn an outfit up a notch without going all the way to leather pants. These are the Emma style that I love so much. They have a great snug fit, and because they’re denim and not faux leather, they’re breathable and move with you.

I was planning to style this outfit with this metallic cold shoulder sweater (and it would be smashing with that!!) but then I ended up purchasing this charcoal grey keyhole sweater this week, and I decided to go this route instead. It’s slightly less dressy than the metallic cold shoulder sweater, and it’s more fitted, which makes it more flattering, but either would be fantastic, and I hope to have an occasion to wear both this season.

So about this keyhole sweater, it’s a small. I actually tried it on in the medium on Sunday night at the Nordstrom holiday shopping party, and it seemed too big. It did something funky under the arms, and both the friend I was shopping with and the sales associate helping us agreed it was a little too big.

I usually wear small in Vince Camuto tops, so I went home and ordered this. I thought it fit great, but in looking through these pictures, it seems a tad snug, and I wish it were just a bit longer. All that to say, I’m second guessing this top. What do you think??

I really want to like it. On the one hand, I am so so so happy to see sweaters getting shorter and more body conscious because this oversized trend has GOT to go. It’s just not that flattering on most of us. That said, wearing fitted tops definitely creates some other issues — nothing that a little shapewear can’t usually take care of, but still, it’s more important to get the right size and fit. With oversized sweaters, you have a little more leeway in that regard.

By the way, this sweater comes in a bunch of other gorgeous, rich colors. I only saw this grey at the store, and when I went to order it online, I didn’t really consider the other colors, but now I’m thinking I should have because some are stunning. Also, it is on sale for 40% off, bringing it down to $52. It’s a really nice sweater that would last for years, and it has a lot of pretty details.

Okay, let’s wrap this up! I wanted to dress it up for a holiday party, so I added blingy statement earrings and a glittery beaded wrap bracelet, but if you want to tone it down, you could wear more subtle jewelry and trade out the coated denim for black pants or jeans. I think this outfit would be amazing with those LOFT scuba skinny pants (currently 40% off!)

On my lips, I’m wearing my new favorite lipstick. When I walked into the salon where I get my nails done last week, all the girls behind the front desk were wearing bold red lipstick, and they all looked so gorgeous and festive. I immediately asked them to hook me up (I am every marketer’s dream come true, ha!) and they sold me this red lip plumper by GrandeLIPS. I have never heard of this brand, but it has great pigment, and it is so moist and shiny. I love it so much that I included it in my Best Beauty Gifts for the Holidays post that went up last night. (Be sure to check that out!!!)

I’m also wearing a red lip liner because I’m old and my lipstick tends to bleed on me these days — especially darker colors, but I always wear lip liner even with light colors because it gives definition to my thin lips.

  1. I think you chose the perfect name! Love the pants. If I knew how to type out a whistle sound I would. 😉 Such a pretty outfit Jo-Lynne!

  2. Jolynne, you look absolutely stunning in this outfit. I think the sweater is a perfect fit, and you have the figure to wear it well! Soooo classy!!

  3. LOVE this outfit! The shoes are fantastic and your makeup looks so good. Not sure if I can pull off a red lip, but maybe I can find the right shade for my coloring. And I think the sweater fits you just right. Have a great weekend!

  4. I love this outfit! I really love this shade of gray, it’s one of my favorites.

I clicked on the link to the sweater and I have to say that I would not have even given this sweater a second look without seeing our post, it looks so much better on a curvy model like yourself.

  5. Absolutely gorgeous, girl! Love the jeans. Love the sweater. but the shoes really make this outfit pop! Great combination of textures and pieces. I don’t think the sweater is too small on you. It looks like it fits perfectly, but I do know, if you are not completely happy with it, if you are like me, you won’t wear it! Ha, ha. Love this outfit and it makes me wish I had some holiday parties to go to! Ha, ha. Have a great weekend! – Amy

  6. Outfit is gorgeous! I do have to admit that my first thought was “that sweater is shorter than she normally likes to wear”. Guess that proves that I read and follow your blog VERY closely!:) Merry Christmas!

  7. Love this outfit. You look so beautiful in it. I would love to know if you are still doing your Whole 30 program and some recipes you are using. You look wonderful!!!

    1. Hey Daisy, I’m trying to stick with the basics – more veggies, fewer carbs, very limited sugar, yadda yadda. 🙂 It’s easier to maintain than to lose, so I can cheat now and again and stay within a comfortable range, but I’m trying not to fall back into old habits b/c that would be easy to do! (And thank you.)

  8. I have these shoes! Too, just bought a great pair of coated AG jeans. I can shop my closet! Thanks for posting this outfit . You look amazing????

  9. I’m with you on the “loose and baggy has to go” comment. My hubby says everyone looks like they’re wearing the drapes these days! This sweater is a beautiful step in that direction. It’s also perfect for skirts– I have a gazillion that are on “hold” because they look horrible with the long & flowy trends. This outfit is classy and gorgeous! Shoes are so darn cute. I also love the subtle edginess of it by which I mean no cranky woman will say to you, “Why are you so dressed up?” (The too-casual trend has to go too!) Merry Christmas!

  10. Another fabulous post from you! I am completely on board with you in that the loose style of clothing must GO!! The sweater fits you perfectly, and with those pants this outfit is a winner. Now I must resist purchasing the entire outfit, lol!

  11. Those pants are fabulous! I just got my first pair of jeans based on your recommendation and I love this brand! I think the sweater looks appropriate but if you are uncomfortable at all I say return it. Great look for you and these shoes are so fun.

  12. Absolutely LOVING this outfit!! EVERYTHING about it!! You really nailed it!! Just wondering if you can tell me if there is a sheen to the sweater? On the website, it appears that there is but maybe it is just my computer? Thanks, in advance.

  13. Jolynne, everything is perfect on this outfit. Plus your hair and makeup look terrific. I’ll check out that lipstick but it looks like the perfect shade of red for you… it can be tough to find a compliantary red lipstick. Is your hair pulled back with bobby pins, barrette or something else?

  14. Great outfit! I think the sweater is great, but for me, I’d want it a little longer, because I have more of a tummy than you do, and even though I don’t have to wear something oversized or boxy, it’s tricky for me to find a sweater I like. Love the shoes, the pants, the lippy! Woohoo!

    1. Yeah, if it were an inch or two longer, it would give me some wiggle room. I feel like the way it is, it is very unforgiving if I gain a few lbs back. But the medium was too big. Frustrating b/c usually this brand fits me to a T.

  15. You look fantastic! All of your clean eating efforts are really showing. Hope you and yours have a blessed and joyous Christmas and New Year. Thank you for all the advice and assistance throughout the year!

  16. I’ve just been reading your closet purge post so I have to say….the outfit looks gorgeous but if YOU aren’t loving that sweater then it at least has to go in the “maybe” pile, right? My favorite – those earrings!!!! To. Die. For.

      1. Maybe after all the oversized trends it’s just a matter of readjusting the way something feels on you. I’m still trying to come to terms with looser fitting so maybe I should give up and stick to my old clingy things once and for all. Lol.

        1. Yeah, I hear ya. After taking the Adore Your Wardrobe class and determining my sweet spot for tops, it’s hard for me to deviate without it annoying me. This one is close enough, though. 🙂

  17. Hi Jo-Lynne you look beautiful! I noticed you love the red lipstick your wearing and it looks great on you 🙂 I wanted to ask if you have ever heard of Lipsense by Senegence? Its a long wearing lip color that lasts up to 18 hours and doesn’t dry your lips out like stains do. Anyway if your interested in trying, I would love to send you some for free just for you to review. My email is [email protected].

    Thanks
    Have a Merry Christmas
