Holidays at Home: Two Ways to Wear Velvet Jeans

Happy Tuesday, friends! I hope your week is off to a good start. I’ve finally got my holiday shopping done, and I’m thinking ahead about what to wear as we celebrate the season quietly at home this year.

We usually spend Christmas morning alone, so that’s nothing new, but we won’t have the typical holiday parties and gatherings we normally do. That said, we will probably be seeing some friends and family members in small groups, and I want to look comfortable but festive.

As I was prepping for this post with Ann Taylor, these velvet skinny jeans caught my eye, and I knew they were the answer. I’m wearing my true size 6 in the toasted taupe, and they also come in curvy and petite styles. (Oh, and they’re marked down to $35 today!)

I love how you get the luxe sheen of velvet along with the comfort of jeans — perfect for this year’s unconventional holiday gatherings, and you can wear them right into the new year as well.

First, I styled them with this cozy ivory lace up sweater. In addition to the fun lace-up detail at the neck, it has trendy balloon sleeves, and it’s really soft and cozy. There is no wool content listed, so it shouldn’t irritate sensitive skin.

This sweater is shorter in length with a split hem, so you can leave it untucked, which I prefer with the high rise jeans. It also comes in grey, and it runs true to size. I’m wearing the small.

I accessorized this first look with pearlized pave ball stud earrings. I love a pair of oversized studs — they’re just so classy, and the glittery pave accents make them a little extra special for holiday.

My second look is a little more dressed up. I paired the same velvet skinnies with a shimmery open cardigan and lace trim tank.

Unfortunately, the cardigan has sold out, but this one is similar, or this shorter style would work too.

This tank is a wardrobe staple that I know I’m going to get lots of wear out of all year-round, and it makes the perfect base layer under a shimmery cardigan.

I love the wide, bra-friendly straps and feminine lace trim. Plus, it’s lined, so there’s no show through.

This tank also comes in ivory, and they have both regular and petite sizes available. I’m wearing the small, for reference.

And this time I’m wearing these pave star earrings for a little extra glam.

Aren’t these so much fun!?! They’re quite a bit larger than the earrings I normally wear, but I love them for holiday.

Even if our holidays are quieter and more subdued this year, I still plan to glam up a bit for the occasion.

How about you? Going glam or the comfort route? You can have the best of both worlds with these looks! Be sure to use code GIFTMORE to save up to 60% off your purchase.

  1. I really like Ann Taylor’s holiday/winter collection this year. How high rise are the velvet pants? Online it says over 12″ for regular and a little under for Petites, which might be better for me at 5’3″. If the rise is too high, then the waist gets very bunchy when I sit down (I’m high-waisted). Also, how is their shipping time lately? Did your order come quickly? I’m still waiting for an order from Black Friday, which baffles me because somehow Nordstrom manages to get things to me in less than a week and now we’re going on 3 weeks for this AT order.

    1. THey’re definitely high. I like them best with the sweater worn over top. When I front-tucked the tank, they look too high to me. I wish I’d bloused it out a bit more, or worn it untucked. 🙂 My shipment did come quickly, but I know that can depend on a lot of factors. Their standard shipping is estimating 6-10 days and warning that shipments can be delayed b/c of high demand, so I’d probably pay to rush it if I wanted it for Christmas.

  2. Love both of these and they both look stunning on you! but that first one is my favorite. Love the comfortable but glam look

  3. That sweater – the white one is SO adorable….I need something like this as I’m not usually a sweater wearer (cardigans instead) but this style is so me. I love the idea of the velvet jeans but struggle with the color (although I love it) because of what color shoes to wear as I feel the flats you have on colorwise don’t visually look right (could be the picture and might look right in person though)

  4. I love both looks! Very festive!
Is your garland on your bannister real or artificial? It’s very pretty! If artificial, where is it from? Thanks!

  5. Your outfits are stunning!  And you are the perfect model!  Allison does such a great job with lighting.  I’m loving the earrings, both styles.  And the velvet jeans, 😍.   Actually every component of what you styled!  So festive!
Re the storm, we’re “hunkering down” as well. The grandkids have half a day of school now.  We’re praying the power stays on, as yesterday we an unexplained power outage in the area.  And our daughter’s  supplemental heat, which is a gas fireplace, shut off.  Fortunately we’re friends with the gas company owner and he squeezed her in to make the repair.  Crazy times for sure!  Praying everyone in the storms path will be safe & warm!

  6. You look stunning in both outfits! Unfortunately, this Christmas, I plan to be much more casual than in the past. Our gathering will be just my parents, my husband, two of our daughters, and me. Since my mom is in remission from Leukemia, we thought it best to keep our celebration very intimate and casual…and to just have fun and relax! Side comment: Your tree, banister garland, and home are lovely! (We share a very similar aesthetic! wink wink) Have a great day!

  7. I love the first outfit. I may have to look at those items. I had vowed not to buy any more winter clothes since we are staying at home, no social gatherings, etc., and teaching online. Then we plan on moving this summer to NC. With all that in mind, I love that outfit, so I am thinking…
We are also waiting on the storm although we are not supposed to get as much snow as farther south. I am ready for some snow and winter. Might as well as a good New England winter before we move south. Generator is ready, pellet stove is going, Christmas lights are on, and I am ready to start correcting final work from my students.
Stay safe, enjoy the snow, and try to relax!

  8. Both outfits are very pretty on you!  We will be super casual because I bought us Christmas pj’s that are red & black buffalo plaid to wear.  Since I couldn’t find us matching ones, I bought an ugly sweatshirt for Larry to wear with his fleece bottoms.  My set is out of a regular cotton, so I won’t be as warm as him.  Oh, I also bought us plaid socks to wear with them.  At least we will be super comfortable all day.  Good luck with the snow storm!  Even though y’all do have a generator, I hope you don’t lose power.  I’ll be watching for pictures.

  9. I love  the color  of those pants.  they arent  your basic  black or red holiday pants.  these are too very nice  outfits

  10. We’re only allowed to associate with members from our own household in BC so there won’t be any parties or getting together for drinks. I have a red cashmere sweater that I’m going to wear Christmas Day. I think I’ll add some sparkle earrings too. ✨

  11. Love the velvet jeans! So festive, chic yet comfortable and casual.  I love the Adriatic Sea teal and burgundy colors on the website too.  Fingers crossed for you folks not to save power.  Getting 12 to 20 inches of snow is a lot! Yikes.  Stay safe, stay warm and cozy.  We have new restrictions in Alberta as of last week: no indoor or outdoor get togethers with anyone outside of your household.  Thankfully, it is mild weather so can enjoy being outside and seeing neighbors from afar.  Love your Christmas tree and garland on your stairs: looks so beautiful!

  12. I hope your power stays on.  Our lines are buried and so nice to not have that worry.  Love the cami, as need to wear a bra.  The looks are perfect for this year. Stay warm and enjoy your snow storm!

  13. Soooo jealous. I’d love some snow. Hope you don’t loose power. Love the first outfit. Festive but casual. I have similar color LOFT cords and a cream sweater. I still have no ideas what I’m wearing. Just us and our 3 kids and mates and two grand babies at my home this year, but that’s typical for us.  Hard to dress up when cooking all the meals all day for 3 days. I better figure it out. Probably shopping my closet. Too late to order.

    1. I do hear ya on that. I don’t do much cooking, since it’s usually just the 5 of us on Christmas Day. And we always do something unconventional – like steak and baked potato, lol. Easy!

  14. I love those velvet jeans! I bought some velvet jeggings from HSN (or was it QVC?) that I had high hopes for, but they went back as fast as they got here. Didn’t fit right and weren’t really velvety-feeling. But at $35, I had to jump on these.

Any suggestions for what to wear with the “taupe” ones (that look mauve to me) besides the cream? Cream washes me out terribly. I do have a pretty black cardigan similar to yours.

I hope your power stays on!

    1. They’re definitely more mauve. I like them with black or grey or white or cream… I’m sure some ladies would get more creative with contrasting colors, but I think I would stick with a neutral that you like with your skintone. I think once you see them in person, it will be easier to tell what you like with them. It’s hard to get the right color in pictures.

  15. Wow!!! I love both looks, Jo-Lynne! We’re doing a very quiet celebration this year as well.  So, I’ll probably dress more casual, but still a casual glam look.
I love each detail of both outfits. The velvet jeans elevate both looks. I’m crushing on both pairs of earrings!
You look gorgeous in both outfits, and again, i love both!!

  16. Do you have a link to the flat shoes in the first look or similar? I’m thinking something like this is more practical than the pointed suede mules I bought and have never worn.
