Homemade Popcorn

For more wholesome recipes, see my recipe index.

One of the first things we did when we made the switch to real foods was ditch the microwave popcorn in favor of the real deal.

This is an easy switch because IT IS SO DELICIOUS. Seriously, after you taste this you will wonder how you ever tolerated the stuff that comes in that chemical-lined bag.

Microwave popcorn is all sorts of wrong.

HAVE YOU READ THE INGREDIENTS LABEL?

Please do. And then go buy yourself a stainless steel stovetop popcorn popper, kernels and coconut oil and treat yourself to some REAL POPCORN.

You really don’t even need the fancy crank. You can do this on the stovetop, although I’ve never tried it.

All you need is 2 Tablespoons coconut oil (I use NUTIVA Organic Extra Virgin Coconut Oil), 1 Tablespoon butter, 1/2 cup popcorn kernels (organic is best) and salt and pepper.

You melt the oils over medium heat, add the popcorn kernels, and start cranking. Or shaking, if you don’t have a crank. Or a cranker . . .

When it’s done, salt and pepper it and put it in a cute serving bowl and devour it! (That’s what we just did!)

  1. For another delicious–albeit more caloric–twist, melt 3 Tbsp. butter with 2 Tbsp. peanut butter. Drizzle it over the popcorn and mix. YUM!

  2. We’ve been doing this for probably the last year or so (?) and OH. MY. WORD. It is so worth the extra time–it’s amazing. It’s like a food group. I feel like I was cheated for years!

  3. This is our favorite snack around here! I love the homemade popcorn with the coconut oil…just can’t be beat!

  4. I’ve seen it done, but I have NEVER tried just popping kernels in a pot. I’m sure I would burn my house down! I want to get a popcorn popper, though – because I LURRRRVE me some popcorn – but I hear the microwave bags are super toxic?!?

  5. I had to look twice….at the irony of homemade popcorn because in my mind what other kind is there? It is better both in flavor and nutrition…and so inexpensive to make that one will wonder what to do with the savings! My aunt grew it in the garden and we loved getting those gallon jars of homegrown goodness!

Keep your good ideas on eating wholesome goodness coming!

  6. Shameful to say my Whirley pop pot hasn’t looked that good in 7 years. That is all our family eats. It had gotten so bad i was popping popcorn every night. We’re down to once or twice w a week now. DH acts as if he has no clue how to use the WP. They make great gifts too. I use olive oil, most of the time, the taste of it on your popcorn is second to none. I’m really not sure how healthy evoo is in the wp, but its better than the micro wave stuff, that “butter” coats the roof of you mouth. I cant imagine whats its doing to you veins..

  7. I just tried using a brown lunch sack, 1/2 cup kernels and 1 tbsp oil in microwave. Just found lunch sack a couple of times and place upright. Press popcorn button. It was amazing!
