Transition Your Wardrobe from Winter to Spring with Lighter Fabrics

Happy Friday, friends! Today Amy Ann and I are wrapping up our series on how to transition your wardrobe from winter to spring.

I know it’s not here yet for most of us, but I’m done shopping for winter and having fun adding lighter pieces to my closet in anticipation of warmer days to come! Soon I’ll be trading in my sweaters for blouses, my leather and suede jackets for denim, and my boots for mules and loafers.

So far we’ve talked about transitioning our outfits from winter to spring with a shoe swapbrighter colorslighter layers, and cropped jeans.

Today we’re talking about incorporating lighter fabrics into our outfits as we head into spring. You can see more of Amy’s look HERE.

Today’s look incorporates a happy printed blouse with a denim jacket and my favorite wardrobe item for spring — white jeans!

I did opt for booties, but mules or loafers would work just as well. I like to mix it up this time of year by continuing to wear some of my winter items along with a few lighter pieces that give a nod to spring.

This geo-print blouse from Loft is one of my favorite purchases so far this spring. I love the color palette, and it’s made of a nice drapey fabric that layers beautifully.

It’s a mixed media style, actually, so the front is a woven fabric and the back is more of a knit/rayon that is comfortable and provides a little more coverage. It runs true to size; for reference, I’m wearing the small.

The colors of this blouse lend themselves perfectly to white and blue denim. Whether you wear a blue denim jacket and white jeans, as I did here, or a white denim jacket with bluejeans, this color combo exudes such a fresh and happy spring vibe.

This denim jacket is incredibly flattering. It has a great shape to it, and the medium blue wash goes with everything. It’s nice and thick but soft and stretchy. So so so good! I take a small in this jacket as well.

These white skinnies are my old go-to Paige Verdugos. I had my first pair for three or four years and wore them so much they were finally starting to look dingy, so I grabbed these on sale at Saks Off Fifth last year. They do seem slightly thinner than my original pair, so I don’t know what’s up with that, but I still like them and wear them a lot. I did size up to a 30 in these; I typically wear a 29 in Paige, but for some reason the white denim looks better a size up.

Finally, I wore grey suede booties and carried a light grey bag. It’s totally fine to keep wearing booties into springtime. Especially while the weather is still chilly, they’re a nice way to transition your looks without going all the way to sandals too soon.

In the past, I’ve talked about 3 keys to making an outfit more interesting — a focal point, juxtaposition, and a completer piece. This outfit has it all.

The pretty printed blouse is the focal point, as it draws the eye first. The denim jacket is the completer piece, and there is some juxtaposition between the feminine/dressy blouse and a more casual/rugged denim jacket. Plus the booties have a subtle Western vibe that contrasts with the clean white pants and classic pattern in the blouse, and the handbag is a little edgy. It all works together beautifully, if I do say so myself! Haha!

This is definitely my favorite outfit of this series… can you tell?

I hope you enjoyed this series on transition style. When we planned it, we were having some milder days and I actually had great weather on the days I shot these looks.

Of course, once we started posting, winter came back with a vengeance. Isn’t that always the way? Ahhh, well. It is February, after all!

Most of us probably have some time before we can start wearing these looks on the regular, but hopefully those of you in the South found some outfit inspiration you can put to use right now.

  1. Glad you had safe travels home. My favorite outfit! I love anything blue. We’ve also been watching Survivor since day 1. 🙂

  2. Love this outfit JoLynne.  It’s my favorite also.  Your booties look a different color than the grey shade you linked to.  Is your grey available?

  3. Glad you made it home safe and sound. Thanks for these transition pieces. We will get there weather wise sometime lol. I really like the outfit you styled today. I can’t wait to get my white jeans on again… I’m a die hard survivor fan.. just wish I could remember all the places they’ve shot the show from.. too many to remember…
    Have a great weekend

  4. I am sooo ready for Spring to hit in full force! I am sure that you were loving the warmer weather on your trip to Arizona. It looked like you had a great time. Thanks for sharing Amy’s looks also. Linking up with you and Cindy when I first started blogging was so amazing for me. That is the whole reason that I started a new series called Friday with Friends so that I can do the same for someone else. I would love to have you join me again this Spring!!!

  5. I would probably have passed by this top, but I put in a “sale alert” I think it might look good on me. I love the idea of bringing out my white jeans soon. I notice that you don’t wear a belt very often even when tucking in a top. I always think I need to put on a belt (which I don’t like to wear very often.) I love winter, but I have to admit, by late February I am tired of wearing boots (and I love boots.) I am ready for shoes!

      1. I totally agree – I don’t need to emphasize that area. I do have a leopard belt, so I will wear that for “an element of interest” following your styling once in awhile. Welcome home!

  6. My white jeans have been on hiatus for awhile but this post is reminding me how much I love them paired with a denim jacket! Really enjoyed this series this week- thanks for the ideas!

  7. Love, love ,love this outfit. This is definitely one I will style exactly like you did!  Off to scan my closet to replicate it!
    Have a great weekend!

  8. I love that blouse! The print reminds me of a shirt I have kept from many years ago because I love the print so much, but it really doesn’t fit me anymore. Now if I could just bring myself to wear white jeans!! Love this look!

  9. It’s one of my favorite outfits too. All parts of it are great. OBTW, my cousin’s son, Rick Devens, is on this season Survivor. He is the morning news anchor with dark hair and glasses.

  10. Loved this series! Makes me long for spring! 🙂 I love this look today, I think it is my favorite of the bunch, although I really love that orange shirt with the stripes! Almost wore my white jeans today, but it is sooo slushy here, they would have been a mess! 🙁

  11. Loft has the BEST little tops! I’m going to watch for a sale and snag this one. I honestly don’t know that I would have thought about it looking so cute with denim, but it does. Glad you’re home and back to life as usual! Happy weekend!

  12. I love this top…well, the whole outfit, actually!  I’m so ready for Spring!  I still haven’t found a pair of white jeans.   I’ve ordered and returned so many pairs over the last year.  And tried on so many in the stores.  I’m not giving up, though!  We are big Survivor fans in this house.  Have watched every season from the beginning.   This one looks like it will be a good one!

    1. They are hard. Honestly, I don’t even love these. I think my last pair was thicker. I’ll keep looking tho. The Old Navy ones are pretty good but they don’t hold me in as well as these.

      1. Yes, that is my biggest issue – that they are too thin and  show my lumps and bumps!   I have the same issue with white tee shirts.  They need to ask us when they are designing these clothes!  Loll

  13. That’s my fav denim jacket too. In fact, I liked it so much I purchased it in two other colors…a dusty grey/black and a white. So worth the money.

  14. Thank you for posting the Transitional Outfits. I really needed this. Although right now we are rainy and cold. It could chang anytime in North Carolina. Looking Sooo forward to warm weather. We still have 3 more days of rain. Make it go Away!! Glad you had a successful trip. Look forward to the Spring Fashion with Cindy! Love your Blog. Linda

  15. Love this outfit the best. I ordered the same blue top from Loft. Still waiting for it to come in. Can’t wait to wear this outfit along with the Denim Jacket I purchased from a Loft Sale recently. Thanks for the great ideas!

  16. Love this since I’m there transitioning early in Savannah. Dont even need a jacket. Usually do white pants in March but I’m ready now. Glad you are back home.

  17. Great outfit!  I’m not sure what size I am at Loft anymore.  I may have to go try things on because you have been styling some really cute tops from them.   I did copy your pink tie front sweater from Loft last spring and have really liked it.  Thanks for all the information, as always.

  18. This outfit actually makes me want spring to come! I normally dread it because it means summer (of which I’m not a fan 😬), but this just makes me want to break out all the cheery things, lol. Love it!

  19. Thanks Jo-Lynne for this series. Very helpful. What nail polish are you wearing in these shots? Looking for a new nude for Spring and I like the color.

  20. How does the geo-print shrit fit? I can wear medium or large in loft tops. Medium in their sweaters and dresses. Can’t decide which size to order.

  21. Hi Jo-Lynn! I just read a February 2019 blog post about transitioning our wardrobe from winter to spring and that post linked to this post on the same topic. Thanks to both of you for your great ideas. I have a question. This being 2020, the start of a new decade, are jeans with the knees ripped out or holes strategically torn into jeans still au courant? This trend seems to have been going since the 1980s, is it finally dead? Thanks for your help!
