How to Wear a Drape Front Cardigan

Hey guys! Can you believe it is already Day 19 of our 25 Days of Winter Fashion!?! We’re in the home stretch!!

When I start these challenges, they always seem like such a huge undertaking, and I wonder how I’ll ever come up with 4 weeks worth of outfits, and then poof! It’s almost over, and I’m like, BUT WAIT! I have so many more things I want to show you! Ha!

Although, I admit, I do breathe a sigh of relief when a series is over. After all, I can still share new outfits as I have them, but the pressure’s off to have something new every. single. day.

So today I have a super cute and affordable sweater to share with you, and we’re going to talk about how to wear a drape front cardigan — or rather, how incredibly awesome a drape front cardigan is and why I love it.

When I spotted this striped cardigan on the Nordstrom website, I was immediately drawn to the artsy, boho vibe. I don’t have anything quite like it, and I instinctively knew that it would be something I would enjoy wearing over and over again.

You know how some things you see and admire on other people, but when you go to wear them, they feel fussy or just not for you? This is happening to me a lot these days. I enjoy trying out the trends, but I end up returning quite a few things after I style them because they just don’t feel right to me. This sweater? It feels right because it’s on trend without being too dramatic.

(By the way, these sweaters are selling out fast! Consider yourself warned.)

Here’s why I love it. At $40, it won’t break the budget, but it doesn’t feel like a cheap sweater. Sweaters at this price point can be scratchy, but this one is made mostly of cotton so it’s nice and soft and holds its shape.

Capes and ponchos are all the rage, and they’re super cute, but they’re a bit cumbersome to wear and can get in your way. This cardigan still has a that great relaxed, oversized look about it, but I don’t find myself catching it on things and trying to figure out what to do with the extra material like I do when I’m wearing a poncho.

Plus, the long draped lapels elongate your silhouette and flatter the figure. It’s a win-win!

I wore this draped cardigan over a white scoop neck tee with skinny jeans. (These are similar, but I got mine on a mega sale — I always feel the need to clarify that! LOL!) I wore my mushroom suede booties that were given to me by The Walking Company. I like how the casual, slouchy style looks with the sweater.

I could have worn this with bootcut jeans, but then I’d definitely need more of a heel to keep the look long and lean. The short heel I’m wearing works well with the skinny jeans, but they’re still comfortable to walk in. If your drape front cardigan is bulky at all, keeping it skinny on the bottom is key to avoiding the frump factor.

(I see my t-shirt had come untucked in this picture. OOOPS!) I like it better loosely tucked in with this sweater. I fixed it as soon as I noticed. I really need a stylist for these photo shoots. I ought to put my daughter to work for me.

For accessories, I added my favorite statement ring — this Stella & Dot Pauline Ring that is currently on sale for $31!!! (That usually means they are going to discontinue it, so if you’ve had your eye on it, grab one now!) With that, I just wore a stack of Alex and Ani bangles. These make great holiday gifts. Just sayin’!!!

Accessorize with a Casual Statement Ring

I always feel the need to add a pendant when I wear an open cardigan so I wore my Silpada chevron plunge necklace. For $59, I have definitely gotten my money’s worth out of this piece. The hammered brass is perfect for my casual wardrobe.

By the way, this sweater comes in 3 color combinations. I was tempted to go for the red one, but I’m really happy I chose the navy. I have enough red and burgundy in my closet!!

I carried my Mini M.A.C. crossbody because the taupe leather and gold hardware seemed to work well with the colors of this outfit. The color I have is sold out, unfortunately, but there are tons of colors to choose from on the R Minkoff website. Some are even on sale.

I’m really loving how this outfit came together. I think I’ll try it next time with a grey t-shirt and my Toms Leila booties for a different look.

  1. This has been sitting in my cart since I first saw you wearing it. Sounds like I should pull the trigger soon! May I ask what size you’re wearing? I’m usually a medium and want to make sure I’m getting the correct size. It looks fantastic on you!

  2. I like this color combo with jeans…so different. If I’m in jeans I always gravitate to black or grey! Are you at a cemetery?

  3. I’ve had my eye on that cardigan since you first wore it. May I ask how tall you are? I’m afraid at 5’4″, it may be way too long for me. I can see myself tripping over the long fringed front! What are your thoughts on a good length cardigan for my height?

  4. I just bought the red/ burgundy one after reading your post and whilst drinking coffee!! Huge storms out here in Oregon on the coast, perfect for hunkering down and shopping online, lol. Thanks JL!! I bought the XS because I’m smaller frame and these long sweaters usually engulf me. I hope it fits!!!!

  5. Seriously one of my favorites you’ve done. I’ve had this in my cart since this morning debating on whether it will work for my frame. Hubby turned me loose to pick out my own Christmas so I can actually justify a couple more “me” purchases…that’s dangerous, lol! ????
