Styling a Robe Jacket

Welcome back to 25 Days of Summer Fashion! Today is Day 8, and I’m venturing a little bit out of my comfort zone and styling a robe jacket.

How to Wear a Robe Jacket This Spring

This Madewell robe jacket came in my last Trunk Club delivery, and I thought it would be fun to style. Basically, this is a wardrobe item that resembles a bathrobe but is intended to be worn as street wear — thus the term, robe jacket.

I expect this outfit to get mixed reactions because I know a lot of people didn’t care for the robe jacket when I shared it on my Insta Story. I admit it’s not my favorite, but I wanted to give it a shot. I mean, what good is having a fashion blog if I never try anything new?

How to wear a robe jacket and why you might want one this summer!

True confessions, I sent the robe jacket back. (I only wore it for about 5 minutes in my front yard for this photo shoot.) It’s a little “out there” for me and I know myself well enough to know that I probably wouldn’t ever wear it. That said, I think it could be a nice work wear piece for someone who is looking for a light layer to wear indoors that is more trendy and fun than a blazer or cardigan, and you can also wear it over a white tee and jean shorts for a more casual weekend look.

The pattern has an interesting combination of colors — navy blue, brown, blush, and light blue primarily make up this floral print. I like that it is different than so many of the florals I’m seeing in the stores right now.

Since it has a dark color palette, I wore it with a white cami and light pink jeans to keep the look summery. I feel like these jeans were practically made for this jacket. To anchor the look with another dark tone on the bottom, I went with brown sandals. I wore a silky cami underneath but you could definitely dress it down with a tee or tank if that’s more comfortable for you.

These shoes are really fun. I picked them up at the Vince Camuto store when I was shopping at Disney Springs, but I can only find them online at Shoes.com and Amazon. I’ve never ordered from that site before, but it says they have free shipping and free exchanges. I love the studded details on these sandals, and they’re very comfortable. They have a 3″ heel rather than the 4″ that is so common with this style of shoe. That 1″ makes a big difference! I could wear these all day.

Also, I love, love, LOVE these jeans. If you’re looking for light pink jeans and you don’t mind spending a bit more, these fit great and are super comfortable. There’s a lot of stretch to them, so definitely size down. Right now they’re 25% off at Bloomingdale’s with code MAINEVENT.

This outfit is a bit of a departure from my typical style, but I think it’s fun for a change. The robe jacket is something to consider if you’re looking for an unusual wardrobe piece that makes a modern statement.

What do you think? Would you wear a robe jacket?

  1. they are just not for me…….at least I’ve not found one that I actually would ever really wear………I love that you went out of your comfort zone and styled it………

  2. I’m not sure that I would wear one of these with such a bold print, but you look absolutely fabulous in it. I honestly thought ‘no way’ on instastories, but you’ve styled it beautifully, you almost have me convinced I love it, haha. But seriously, I could maybe see myself in one with a more subtle print/color.

  3. So it doesn’t look that much different than a kimono to me?? Is the material different, so is it that it’s just because there is no fringe!
Because I love my kimono—I think they are a fun option instead of a cardigan.
And those shoes are hot, Jo-Lynne!!

    1. Yes, I was calling it a kimono until I went online and saw them calling it a robe jacket. Then I searched robe jacket on Pinterest, and sure enough, it’s a thing. But they are pretty much interchangeable with kimonos as far as I can tell. I think of a kimono as more sheer, but I don’t guess it has to be. I have a sheer kimono I want to style soon too!

  4. So I really like the colors and pattern, but not the cut of the Robe Jacket. I think maybe if it were more kimono shape (more rounded edges and a bit shorter) I would like it better. Thanks for trying something new and different though!

  5. I think it’s fun for a change and you definitely look great in the way you styled it. That said, I can’t see myself buying one. The ones I’ve seen either look cute on the young girls (what doesn’t look good on 18 year olds??) or skews towards Golden Girls territory to my eye. Now those sandals though……ALL KINDS OF AWESOME 😉

  6. I don’t believe it is something that I would wear (at least, not that one), but you styled it beautifully!

  7. I think you made a good call sending it back. It’s not that it looks bad, but there are so many other outfits that are more flattering on you. I like how you styled it though. I probably wouldn’t wear it either as I would feel like it added pounds to me and want something a little more structured. Glad you are on the mend, hope you are 100% soon. 🙂

  8. I think it’s a nice look. Perhaps you aren’t “thrilled” with the robe jacket because it’s a bit longer. I am 5’10” and really like the longer cardigans, jackets, and sweaters. Of course, the shorter you are, the harder the style is to wear well and have it look proportionate. The sandals are amazing as is the bag.

  9. Hello there! This observation doesn’t relate to your fashion post but to your hair! The curled look is nice for a change but your hair look so healthy and thick when you wear it straight! Just wanted you to know my 2 cents! 🙂 Enjoy your blog so much!

  10. You make me want to try out this look! I know you said it was something you wouldn’t actually wear, but, WOW, you rocked this outfit.
And ….Oh! My! Gosh!….those shoes! I am in love with them. They seemed to add an extremely cool element to the whole thing.
This blog is so fun and inspiring!
Gotta go forward this to my fashionable sister.
    Have a great day!

    1. There are just some looks that say “under 30” and “over 60” all at the same time. But love that you put yourself out there, JoLynne. That’s the fun of reading blogs 🙂

  11. The robe jacket isn’t your style I agree, it wouldn’t be mine either. I applaud you for styling it though. Someone else reading your post may love it, that’s what makes the world go round 🙂

  12. I have a cute striped kimono that I do like but can’t claim to have worn a ton. I am fine with the robe jacket style but this particular one has too much going on in the pattern for me. I do like the way you styled it though with the light colors and then darker shoes. I got mine through Shein because I wanted to try the trend but not invest a lot in it!

  13. I would never wear one either. The material is not breathable and I thinkI would get annoyed by it.
    You look pretty though!

  14. Time for honesty-I like the style of the robe jacket, but that’s it for me. I can totally see my 18 year old granddaughter wearing it because it fits her personality, in that she is a very carefree and exploratory personality. Sending it back was a good move. Hope you feel 100% real soon.

  15. I would never wear one either. The material is not breathable and I think I would get annoyed by it.
    You look pretty though!

  16. Well of course YOU look cute in it, but it wouldn’t be for me either. Great idea to style it though for everyone to see. Way to get out of that comfort zone. Love the shoes!

  17. You look great JoLynne! Thanks for sharing items that are out of the ordinary and changing things up a bit. Always appreciate your insight and inspiration. Keep it up, I love reading your blog!

  18. Well you styled it the best possible way~still not a fan. I like a more fitted look, so it’s not for me!

  19. The robe jacket for me. I’m busty and that style tends to look bulky and matronly on me. That being said, it might be something I would wear for an evening out over a slimming column of all black. The shoes are great!

  20. I tried to imagine the jacket with a sleeker look like leggings and a longer shell top to go long with the flowy lines of the jacket. Interesting idea but too hot for summer.

  21. I love the look, complete with the pieces you used as the top and bottom for the outfit! The colors are beautiful in the jacket and I think it’s a great statement piece…unusual and eye-catching! Of course, you would not be able to wear it as often as a more neutral piece, but still is fun and could transition to a fall color palette easily. You made it look fabulous for the spring/summer season the way you styled it! 🙂

  22. I’m in the minority, but I really like the robe jacket. I think it looks great the way you styled it.

  23. I like the longer flowy look of a kimono and have several shorter ones. Great to wear with tanks and slim pants. I would consider wrapping it closed in the front and belting with an obi belt. I guess belting isn’t trending right now because no one has mentioned that!! This also would make a great bathing suit cover! I also love your shoes!

  24. I really like the jacket and think it looks great on you! But I have a slightly “boho” vibe myself and have several kimonos/robes. I also think this jacket would look nice styled with a navy sheath and a blush-colored wide belt (maybe a leather obi?) and some neutral strappy sandals. But I totally get sending it back — no point in keeping something you don’t love!

  25. I forgot to mention in my last comment — I bought those jeans after the last post you featured wearing them, and I LOVE them. LOVE.

  26. Well done for trying out a new trend for your readers. I’m 38, but in my view, this is one for the really young ones, LOL. It reminds me too much of granny wear. Unthinkable it’d look good in a 20 something, super skinny girl. I’ll pass!
Love the jeans, top and shoes though!

  27. I don’t care for the robe jacket. The patter is a little much also. Good for you for trying it though!

  28. At the risk of dating myself, every time I see one of those kimono/robe/jackets, they remind me of Lily Tomlin in 9 to 5.

It does look really cute on you and I’m seeing them all over in stores… either it will take off or there will be a huge clearance sale of them rebranded in the lingerie section 🙂

  29. I thought you looked amazing in this outfit. Not really for me tho, either. I do have several of the sheer kimonos & love them. I love something on my “old” cold arms☺️

  30. I think it’s one of those style trends I won’t get into until it’s almost going out! It just looks too old fashioned for my liking, even though I am an over 50 Grammy! Ha, ha! Love the jeans though!

  31. I think it could be cute as a lightweight outer layer but in a different print. This one is a bit dark for summer. Still, you make it look good. 🙂

  32. Well JoLynne, if anyone could style that robe, you could! Great job on putting the outfit together. I like the colors in the robe jacket, but just don’t see it as a very versatile piece. Being on the shorter side, it’s something I wouldn’t gravitate to. BUT, those shoes! Wow! Would love to give them a try, even though they have a heel higher than I would normally wear. They certainly make a statement!

  33. I have a couple that I wear to work. It’s a keeping warm thing, and you are correct, it’s more fun that a sweater or blazer. I also wear a poncho some. In the summer it’s important to be able to take it off after work, you know?
I think they look fun too. I do have a kimono and another thing from Anthro that I have no idea what to call. They are all fun.

  34. Looks darling on you as always I think this could be a great piece for business casual with a twist. I have done so much business wear and business casual I pretty much hate jackets now I do not work. But could see this being a fun addition for those looking to add fashion to boring business casual.
I appreciate you keeping us up to speed!
    Julie L

  35. Not a fan of the robe jacket at all. Looks more robe than jacket. Nice of you to style it though in case others are interested.

  36. First, I love your honesty about sending it back lol. But I don’t think it’s that bad or you did a really good job styling it! And, it does help to have some laying options for those of us that work. Sometimes I feel like a blazer is too business like and a cardigan can look to hot in the summer Texas heat. So I would consider this a good alternative. Thanks for sharing.

  37. I like the robe jacket and think its goes great with the lighter pink jeans. The only thing is I agree with you when you mentioned it before. You could have taken a size smaller in it. Too bad you returned it but you could try smaller size. I bet it would look great later in the Fall too with dark jeans and the cordova color bootie. I love the sandals you have on now. 🙂

  38. I love the way you styled this jacket but it’s a bit heavy looking for me since I’m petite. I just bought a sheer lightweight kimono and I do love it!! It’s fun to wear with jeans. I have also worn it with a dress and got lots of compliments. Thanks Jolynne!

  39. I think these jackets are really cute, but whenever I try them on (I’m 55) I think it’s aging on me. Like others have said, I think it works best if you’re a senior or a teenager! I also know that the first time I wore this my husband would tease me mercilessly for wearing “a robe” out of the house, so there’s that.
I appreciate you trying a new look! It keeps the blog interesting.

  40. Unless worn by a 20-something, a robe jacket reads ‘matronly’ to me. I feel like you have to work really hard with accessories to make it look current. Having said that, you have styled this one beautifully, Jo-Lynne, almost to the point where I want to go out and buy it, haha! I love the pattern and the bold colours. The edgy shoes, released hem skinnies and modern jewellery move it away from matronly, but I see why you are not so keen on it. Thank you for making the effort to show us new trends and how to make them work.

  41. I’m not a big fan of the robe. You did a really good job styling it, and it looks good on you. I would look kind of silly or matronly.
