How to Wear Denim Bermuda Shorts

rolled denim bermuda shorts 6

I generally prefer shorter shorts these days, but I wanted to try Bermuda shorts for something different. I actually had a pair of cuffed denim Bermuda shorts that I used to wear all the time, but when the shorter lengths started coming back in style, I quickly jumped on that bandwagon. I do think I look better in shorter shorts, but Bermuda shorts can be fun for a change.

The key with keeping Bermuda shorts from looking frumpy is to choose a pair that fits close to the body. If they’re any wider, they add visual weight.

I paired my Bermuda shorts with this Lacy Linen Tee from LOFT. It’s been a favorite for the past few weeks. The lace trim and ballet neckline elevates it above a plain t-shirt, but it still has the comfort and breathability of linen. It is currently on sale for $17!!! (You will see the price adjustment after you put it in your cart.) I am wearing a medium, for size reference.

You could also wear these shorts with a looser fitting, more flowy top since they do fit close to the body, creating a long, lean leg-line.

I wore my R Minkoff Studded Gladiator Sandals and carried my Tory Burch Convertible Leather Crossbody in French Grey. They work really well together because they’re similar colors and they both have silver hardware. I like wearing them with outfits that have some color — particularly corals and pinks.

The sandals are on sale for $62 at Bloomingdales. I really love these and have been surprised at how often I wear them. They’re super comfortable, and the elevate a basic outfit to something a little more fun. The bag is currently in stock at Nordstrom. This is the last week of the #NSale. Prices go back up on August 8.

It was a sunny day in Maine so I wore my new Maui Jim Moonbow shades, which were gifted by the brand. They blend well with the coral top, and I pretty much wear them any chance I can get these days.

I kept my jewelry fairly minimal, and I went with silver because of the silver hardware on my shoes and bag.

Silpada has recently gone out of business, so the earrings are no longer available. I didn’t want a necklace to interrupt the lace pattern on the top so I wore a fairly large earring. These drop earrings in the Brown Mother of Pearl would be really pretty with this. They’re by Kendra Scott and part of the #NSale.

    1. It is soooo old. I can’t even remember where I picked it up. I think Nordstrom Rack or maybe Francesca’s. It is too big as well. It was sized wrong, but I still wear it because I really love the snakeskin with so many outfits.

  1. Hi Jo-Lynn, The Bermuda short is my favorite length! I used to wear shorter shorts in my younger years (I’m 62 now!) and they were flattering on me, but I have many visible veins on the backs of my knees that I don’t want to draw attention to, so the Bermuda length is perfect! I love them in denim and chino fabrics. My favorite pair are a dressier pair I bought at Ann Taylor several years ago. I think they are very flattering, and yes, they need to slim-fitting! Enjoy the sunshine today!

  2. Since I recently turned 50, I’ve preferred the look of longer shorts on me. This is a really nice casual look that I would wear, though coral makes me look like a ghost.

I don’t think there’s a color that you don’t look absolutely great in!

  3. Would you be willing to put your latest Trunk Club unpacking video on Facebook for those of us who are too intimidated to get Snapchat??

  4. Love the shorts and top!
    Perfect for fall also!
Realized my shorts are a little loose
and will be looking for long lean
    Pair!
    Enjoy the sunshine..we have
    Beautiful day Chicago!

  5. Ha, I’m 49 and I’m with Sue about the veins. Plus I noticed that my thighs are sliding down my legs and the skin sort of accumulates above the knee, lol. So I exclusively wear the tight Bermudas. I save my shorter shorts for yard work or feeding/cleaning the horses.
    Super-cute outfit!

    1. I find that Kohl’s will still have some denim shorts in their stores now. I bought a pair of their Simply Vera / Vera Wang denim “boyfriend” shorts that almost went to my knees. I was surprised how much I like them! They also carry Levi and Lee brands along with many others. Nice variety.

  6. Jo-Lynne, I like you in the Bermuda shorts, just like the shorter shorts. Being almost 60, I prefer to wear longer shorts. Fortunately, my Bermuda jean shorts do fit my leg. For those that can’t spend a lot on them, the Denizen brand at Target have some stretch and fit very nicely.

Have a blessed day! I’ve got to finish cleaning out the attic, then start packing up the kitchen, laundry & bath rooms.

  7. For what it’s worth, I honestly think I like the Bermuda shorts on you better than the shorter shorts. Maybe it’s because it looks more like something I’d wear myself. I am still in my 30s but have issues with the veins on my legs and have honestly never liked shorts much anyway. And I almost bought that shirt back when LOFT first put the lace ladder tee on sale but I hadn’t seen it on you yet. Now I wish I had gotten it!

  8. Great look! What’s the size of your shirt, I was ordering one and did not no if ran large or small. Thank you!

  9. I really like those shorts on you! Though I also like the shorter ones too.

I love how the bag and shoes go together w/o being too matchy-matchy. I bought the blush shoes, and I have the gray bag…but you are making me wish I’d bought the shoes in sand rather than blush – LOL. I agree they are comfortable and I love how they look – though I do really hate all the buckles.

Btw – I know it’s not your fault because retailers are moving out summer stuff and moving in the fall/winter, but most of those other shorts are also all picked over in sizes 🙁 Oh well, next year!

Glad you enjoyed your mani/pedi day yesterday! Cheers!

    1. Yeah, I waited too long. I really wish I’d posted this earlier. I had the shorts before we went to Maine but we were so busy getting ready to go out of town, I didn’t get the photos done. Sigh…

  10. Loved your denim bermudas! You’re right, they can be tricky to wear (and not always flattering) but yours look great on you!

Love it with the Loft T, which I already received, loved and wore right away (before it became the victim of a day-in-the-life accident…but at least I still have the other two colors.)

Anyway…if you’re looking for a post idea, I sure could use some guidance on belts! Thick, thin, how to choose…it’s just one of those accessories I avoid but shouldn’t.

  11. I REALLY love your top. I love how the fabric looks, and the color is fantastic. I tend to gravitate to the Bermuda shorts as well, as they tend to be a bit more forgiving(read: when you are a bit heavier than you would like to be). I am still trying to decide if I should pack them for Florida, as they may be too heavy?

      1. Yeah, I am the Queen Bee of Overpacking. It may be worse this time, since we will be gone for 14 days! No time to do laundry while we are gone.

  12. Hi, Jo-Lynne! I have recently signed up for your daily emails, love your style. Can you tell me how to see your posts on SnapChat? Thanks!

  13. Cute, cute outfit! You look great in the short shorts and the Bermuda length! I just turned 55 and like some of the others said in previous comments – longer shorts just look better on me at this age. Also – the T-shirt is really cute. We have a Loft in town. And a WHBM too! I might have to go shopping!!

  14. One more thing – several of the reviews on the Loft T-shirt commented that the fabric was rather sheer and might require a cami underneath. Did you find that to be the case? It is so hot here in Alabama during the summer that I can’t wear 2 layers. Thanks!

  15. I love the Bernuda shorts on you. You look taller with them therefore look leaner. Lol a great outfit.

  16. Those look really cute on you. I love Bermuda shorts because of my job, child care in my home, it’s nice to greet kids and parents at the door in something that looks a little more “professional” than the shorter shorts. And bermuda’s fit the bill! Casual and shorts yet not “beachy” or “park-y”. I actually bought shorter shorts this year but have not had the guts to wear them anywhere but after work hours at home so far. LOL.

  17. I honestly think you look at least as good–if not better–in the longer shorts than the shorter ones. They seem to elongate your legs. I probably have never had a pair that fits close enough to my leg I will have to try to find some. Thanks for that tip.
