In Which She Resorts to a List

I’ve had blog topics flitting in and out of my brain all week, but when I sit down to write, danged if I can recall a single one.  There is so much going on in my personal life that I can barely keep up.  I do believe this calls for a list.

1. The wedding is this weekend.  You know, The Wedding — the one that 2 of my kids are in and the one that I bought this dress for.  (How much does it bother me to end sentences with prepositions, even though I know that it’s a misguided grammar rule??)  I love weddings, and I’m looking forward to it, but there is so  much to do to get ready.  Listen to me complaining about having so much to do when I’m sure the bride and her mother are in it up to their eyeballs at this point.  I’ll ask permission to post pictures.  I hope she lets me because she is sure to be one gorgeous bride.

2. I’m reading a book that has me all hot and bothered about the food industry.  I plan to do a more in-depth post after I finish reading it, but it’s called In Defense of Food*.  Basically, everything we eat has been so distorted that is hardly even food anymore.  It makes me want to go live on a farm and grow all my own food.  He explains the history of the nutritionism movement, which is bothersome at best.  And if you think that sounds like a dry read, let me assure you it is anything but.  I found myself chuckling as he stated his conclusions.  Nothing he explains is particularly surprising, but it pretty much confirms what I’ve always believed — that food in its purest form is always better than the artificial substitutes the food industry touts as better for us.  Two big examples — margarine and baby formula.  Nuff said.

If this sounds like an advertorial, let me assure you it is most certainly NOT.  My husband actually took this book out of the library, and I ended up reading it at the beach.  It’s a subject I am passionate about, but often my enjoyment of food outweighs my disdain for its ingredients.  Plus, it’s just not convenient to make everything from scratch.  But since starting this book, I have renewed my commitment to feed my family better.  What all that entails, I’m not quite sure just yet.  I’ll let you know when I figure it out.

3. Last night my 6-year-old daughter took a Hip Hop dance class.  She’s never had a dance lesson in her life, but she wanted to go with a friend, and I figured it might be fun for her.  It’s an 8-week pay-as-you-go type of deal, so I have nothing to lose.  From watching through the tinted glass window, I was reminded that the poor child has inherited my extraordinary grace and coordination.  I’m quite positive that her future does not include a spot in the top 20 on So You Think You Can Dance.

4. In other news, I am so excited.  I was invited by the folks at iRobot to a mom blogger summit in Boston next week.  I wasn’t familiar with iRobot before I received this invitation, but any company that takes the work out of housework is a friend of mine.  I can’t wait to see what they have in store for us.  Besides that, I went to college in Boston, and I haven’t been back to the city in many years.  In fact, I don’t know if I’ve ever been back.  So while my first scheduled event isn’t until dinnertime, I’m hoping for an early plane flight so I have time to explore the old stomping grounds.

And that, as they say, is that.  It’s time to get on with my day.

*Disclosure: an affiliate link is in the house, which basically means if you click on that link and buy the book I get about 2 cents to spend at Amazon.com.  So if you don’t want me to get rich off your purchases, you’ll want to buy it elsewhere.  I’ve been using affiliate links for years, but the scuttlebutt around the blogosphere is that the FCC is cracking down and wants bloggers to disclose all affiliate links, so there you are.  Full and unabashed disclosure.

  1. My sister read that book, and it is in my queue at the library. Now I really can’t wait to read it. Trying to eat healthy is not always easy, but you can always get your veggies and fruits first hand…and you meats too.

We started getting our beef straight from a butcher, our chicken too. Yes, up front the cost is more but I know exactly what goes into the steer, and what he does for his process. I love it!

  2. I will comment in a list too 🙂

    1) Enjoy the wedding. Weddings are so fun and seeing your kids all dressed up is a blast too.

    2) I just heard about a similar book yesterday that I am going to look for in the library.

    3) I am very uncoordinated and not very athletic unfortunately only my oldest son inherited it. Good thing he is smart and good at other things.

    4) Enjoy the trip!

  3. That dress is beautiful. Have a great time.

And have fun in Boston. We use to live there and it such a great town! I miss our church, Park Street. We had the best small group! Oh and I of course miss Newbury St 🙂

    Loved the disclaimer. Hilarious.

  4. Okay, you want to get nuts about your food? Read Animal, Vegetable, Miracle by Barbara Kingsolver. Here’s here site link — https://www.kingsolver.com/home/index.asp

Great, interesting, informative read and really makes you think. I probably should read it again because I’ve been taking the convenience route for our food these days! Oh, and love the dress! You hot mama, you!

  5. My daughter has also inherited the same grace and coordination as your daughter. No dance for her! However, swim team has proven to be a very good fit.
We have an iRobot. Our neighbors went through foreclosure and opted not to take everything out of their house. They gave us free rein to go through the house ad take anything we could use. They left behind a brand new, still in the box, iRobot. WE LOVE IT!!!!! I don’t have to sweep my hardwoods in the kitchen and dining room any more. Hallelujah!

  6. I totally agree with you about blog topics. They float in and out of my brain like the strange things that float in and out of my sink when I run the dishwasher… but I digress.
    Excited about your wedding! FUN!!

  7. I have an iRobot Roomba. My life has never been the same since i got it. It was a Christmas gift, but I’d have to run out and get a new one if it died. Seriously, there is NOTHING like leaving a room, turning off the light and knowing it is getting vacuumed while you go somewhere else. Wow, that sounded like an ad, but let me tell ya, good product to learn about!

  8. 1. First of all, let me say that a hip-hop class sounds like great fun. I would love to join her.

    2. Enjoy the wedding. I hope you look fabulous in your new dress.

    3. The book would probably make me cringe.

    4. I have an iRobot Roomba. My hats off to the cat that designed that thing. It is the closest thing to a maid I will ever have. =)

    Enjoy your day!

  9. I know most folks voted for the black dress, but I think you made the right color choice. Can’t wait to see pictures – I’m sure you’ll be a knock-out. Just don’t stand too close to the bride. Have fun!

PS: I love my iRobot! I can send it on its merry way to vaccuum while I play a game with my kids (or flip through a magazine!).

  10. Have you read “The Omnivore’s Dilemma”? I started it yesterday and it’s an eye-opener so far.

  11. I had to read that book for a college class actually. It’s made me… a bit frightened of food and the future of food. A real eye opener.

I also enjoyed one of his other books: Omnivores Dilemma.

Another book I had to read for that class was by Barbara Kingsolver: Animal, Vegetable, Miracle. That was a pretty good book too, but I did have a few criticms.

  12. That book sounds wonderful – definitely up my alley. I’ll have to add it to my “to-read” list. Have you heard of the documentary “Food Inc”? It’s in our Netflix queue and it looks really good.

The iRobot blogger event sounds AWESOME. I have secretly wanted a Roomba for the longest time. We have tile in most our house now so I think I’d love to give the Scooba a try too. What other bloggers will be in attendance? Be sure to post pictures! I can’t wait to hear all about it.

P.S. All this disclosure stuff seems a little ridiculous, if you ask me. I don’t really care if you bought a product with your hard-earned money or if you got paid a million dollars to write about it. I read your blog because I trust you and I know you won’t promote something you don’t believe in…
