Instagram Roundup // What I Wore This Week 10.22.16

Good Saturday morning! It’s time for another Instagram Roundup, or in a nutshell, what I wore this week. Before I switched to blogging all fashion all the time, I used to share my daily outfits once a week, and that is sort of what this is.

I’m not going to post all the pictures of the outfits I already shared on the blog this week because you’ve probably seen those or you can easily scroll through my last few blog posts. But these are the selfies I posted on Instagram of what I was actually wearing with shopping links and some commentary on how the outfits came together.

This week my outfits are all over the map. It’s gone from a high/low temp of 58/35 to 83/67 so I’ve worn everything from boots and scarves to shorts and flip flops this week!

Instagram Roundup: Casual Fall Outfits for Moms

I wore this to my son’s band cavalcade last Saturday. It was a beautiful fall day but it got chilly that night, so I wore a sweater and jeans with booties and a scarf, and I threw this utility jacket on for good measure. I was glad I had it!

By the way, I just discovered that my AG Ankle Skinnies are 25% off! They’re a great basic skinny jean for wearing with booties, and they run TTS. The washing instructions indicate that you can put these in the dryer, but I never dry my premium denim. I always hang it up, and if it seems stiff when I go to put it on, it loosens up almost immediately.

The next morning I wore this outfit to church. (Yes, the same scarf! I’m obsessed.) I actually switched out my OTK boots for lace-up flats, but I photographed this so I could share that these OTK boots are on sale! These are so comfortable and great quality. The teal bag came in my last Trunk Club, and I was excited to add a new color to my closet.

Then it started warming up. I wore this sleeveless cowl neck top with my Emma skinnies (DL1961 has 30% off all full price styles right now!) These are probably my favorite jeans, if I had to pick one pair. I just ordered a pair in a darker wash to replace an older pair of dark wash jeans that have started to look dated.

DL1961 Emma Legging Jeans (the light wash I’m wearing is old; this pair is similar and on sale at Bloomies) // similar sleeveless cowl neck tops here and here // Sam Edelman Felicia Flats in Classic Nude Leather (LOVE!!!) // my Stella & Dot suede Sunday Bag // assorted Alex and Ani bangles // hoop earrings

I wore my ivory cowl neck sweater with my new AG Raw Hem Ankle Legging Jeans one evening last week. The jeans came in the mail that day and I couldn’t wait to try them on. They have a lived-in feel like I’ve owned them for 10 years so I kept them on all night. I threw on these pink suede flats and carried my leopard clutch to take photos for this post. I picked up the leopard clutch and jeans for 30% off on the Shopbop sale last week.

Foldover Clutch (less expensive option) // hoop earrings // my Stella & Dot Becker Cuff

Then it got really hot out and I pulled out shorts and flip flops for a couple of days. No joke!!

Stripes and Denim FTW!

stripe tee (less expensive option) // cut-offs (I also have and love these and they’re on sale) // TB Miller Sandals // TB Thea Hobo // assorted Alex and Ani bangles  // my Stella & Dot Bungalow Hoop Earrings

It got a bit cooler towards the end of the week and I wore this to get my hair cut (which is why it’s pulled back — no sense fixing my hair before going to get it cut.) This outfit is so simple but I just love it. I realize all of the components are quite pricey, but I think that’s why each piece fits so well and has such great details. Every piece I’m linking to was bought on a good sale — like 30% or more.

Casual Fall Outfit with AG Raw Hem Legging Ankle Jeans, Paige Ranleigh Scoop Neck Tee, and M. Gemi Brezza Lace-Up Flats

Paige Ranleigh Scoop Neck Tee (less expensive option – I have this in several colors; size down) // AG Raw Hem Legging Ankle Jeans (less expensive option – gets great reviews!) // M. Gemi Brezza Lace-Up Flats // Marc Jacobs Satchel (mine is a lighter grey than the one I’m linking to)

And that’s pretty much a wrap! My life is very casual, as you can see. I pretty much live in skinny jeans and tees or sweaters, and I’m such a sucker for great fit and quality materials in my casual wear. It’s easy to figure it doesn’t matter what you wear when you spend most of your days at home or running mundane errands, but I’ve slipped into the yoga pants rut before, and it wrecks havoc on my emotional well-being. After a few weeks of that, I start to not care about much of anything, and that isn’t good for me or my family.

So now I do my best to get up and get dressed and made up every day, and it helps to have casual wear that I really love and feel great in. I do give myself what I like to call a “grace day” about once a week. It feels good to let it all hang out every once in a while, lol, but I allow myself no more than one day because that’s a slippery slope.

Speaking of yoga pants, I watched a big bru-ha-ha erupt on Facebook this week over a newspaper article a man wrote about how women need to give up the yoga pants and leggings. The women were incensed that he dare suggest such a thing, and they are actually staging a yoga pants parade this weekend. I am not kidding. Did anyone else see that?

My first thought was, why aren’t we utilizing all that time and passion to protest something seriously offensive like s@x trafficking or animal abuse??? And my second thought was, it is just as easy to pull on a pair of jeans as it is to pull on a pair of leggings, and some of my jeans are every bit as comfortable. Are we really going to make a case that it is that we women are so terribly busy that we can’t pull on jeans and a sweater in the morning? I just don’t get that.

Not that I’m saying we should never wear a pair of leggings out of the house, and when I was at home with young children who were spitting up and putting their sticky hands on my pants, I know I didn’t want to wear my best duds. But at this point in my life, I have no such excuse, and it’s amazing how much better I feel about myself and the world around me when I make that little effort. (And honestly, when my kids were little, I don’t remember yoga pants being that much of a thing. I am pretty sure I wore jeans most of the time even then. I mean, they do wash!)

Okay, I’ll step off my soapbox now. Ha! These are obviously not critical issues, and at the end of the day, I believe we should wear what we want as long as its modest, but it really cracked me up to see these ladies getting so up in arms over that article. He was a little extreme, but I believe he makes a valid point.

  1. I absolutely love you blog. I’m a pear shape who looks best in boot cut jeans. Would love to see you style bootcuts with flats sometime.

  2. Well Said!! You’re so right about this crazy weather, as I’m also in PA, only the Northeast Pocono’s region. What a gift we’ve been given this week! Warm temps, blue skies, and the leaves have just been gorgeous. And…we all know whats next……I enjoy seeing your casual styles, as that’s where I am in this phase of my life. It’s really too easy to get into the habit of dressing down. After I started following Cyndi & then found you, I have made more of an effort to dress up, meaning jeans instead of the sweat pants I’ve come to love! The sweats I keep now for the coolish rainy days when I stay home! Make up is a daily ritual, as well as earrings. I pass up the lipstick on grandkids day, as I like to give them lots of kisses, which they don’t like it on their cheeks before school! Especially my grandson!! Enjoy the weekend as we will be getting a taste of fall & maybe a bit of winter!

  3. Jo-Lynne, love the plaid scarf and utility jacket! Is it the tan? I have a similar utility jacket and want to get the right one.You always look so nice and stylish, I enjoy your posts!

    1. Thanks, Kim! (and I corrected my name for you, haha!) Mine is actually an older version of the Hinge utility jacket, and I don’t think they have the exact color anymore. I kind of like the lighter green one I linked to. I keep telling myself I do not need another utility jacket! HA!

  4. Ha! I didn’t hear about that, but it really doesn’t surprise me. I made the decision about 5 or 6 years ago to start putting more thought into my wardrobe and my appearance overall. I didn’t wear yoga pants or leggings back then though. For me, it was Addidas windpants, lol. I made a rule for myself to never ever wear them outside my house again. Not that there’s anything wrong with that, but just as you mentioned, it’s a slippery slope I didn’t want to be on. My attitude, mood -everything is better when I feel put together. I’ve actually caught criticism here and there that no one cares. Well I do! Plus, my husband sure doesn’t mind it 😉 . I like to feel good and confident, and if it means I have to take an extra few minutes, it’s not a big deal for me to do so.

  5. I couldn’t agree with you more. No one needs to break out the old prom gown everyday but put some effort into how you look. After all, God gave us this beautiful life, let’s make the best of it. It just makes you feel good!

  6. Love your style:) i did hear about the yoga pant parade???????? made me chuckle. Have a great weekend and cant wait to see what you wear next week!

  7. I love your blog and missed the yoga pants controversy. To me, saying it’s just as easy to wear jeans and a sweater as it is to wear yoga pants is missing the point. It’s really gross and offensive that the author feels so free to objectify women to such a degree. Then on top of that feels that his voice and opinion is just so darn important that he’s willing to publicly shame women into dressing the way he deems appropriate. Yuck. I’m sure this guy has issues with skinny jeans too. I prefer to assume that adults are more than capable of dressing themselves and have their own reasons for dressing the way they are. And however they are dressed it should have no impact on my effort to treat all people with dignity.

I love how you write about dressing for yourself and that it’s a part of taking good care of yourself. This guy’s opinion on leggings doesn’t (or shouldn’t) matter. It’s okay to care about both child trafficking and misogyny (and to call it out when you see it).

I really got on my soapbox there lol! I adore you and your blog.

    1. Haha, I get that, totally. But I still think he makes some valid points. 😉 And also that he wrote it with the intent of being dramatic and inciting a reaction. Drama sells.

      1. Hmmmm. Well it’s all subjective of course but I disagree that he had any valid points. Maybe in a different context, but not in that form.

You sharing your own reasons for not wearing yoga pants is very valid and valuable. I find his behavior (public shaming and trying to “educate” the opposite sex on appropriate dress) to be far more troubling than public displays of yoga pants. I don’t want my sons to think this way, that’s for sure!

The comments here are interesting too. It’s one thing to realize the way you dressing isn’t working for you, that can be a good and healthy thing. It’s something else entirely to think a personal decision about clothing should extend to all women.

If I’m out and about and notice a woman wearing pajama pants or looking frazzled etc. I want to have the good grace to assume she’s probably had a tough day (or a tough life) and has her reasons for dressing the way she is.

I’ll stop! I’m not so good at articulating my point.

  8. Hi there Jo-Lynne! I live in south Jersey, so am dealing with the same weather as you! I can’t believe I actually put my a/c back on in mid-October! I had to chuckle at the “yoga pant controversy” letter! But I do cringe when I see ladies out in public with leggings and a top that is WAY too short!! I do love leggings as an intentional outfit with a long tunic. I’m 5″7″ and I make sure my tunic is mid-thigh! (which sometimes is actually a short dress!!) And the outfit is especially cute with knee high boots. I probably won’t attend the yoga pant protest parade tomorrow…ha ha!

  9. Really enjoy your blog. I don’t really understand the controversy over leggings and even yoga pants. I am a 52 year old woman and wear leggings frequently in the fall/winter season but always dressed up with tunics or tunic sweaters, flats or boots. Don’t see that much difference from skinny jeans. I also wear yoga pants sometimes but always with a long top to cover the bum and either cute tennis shoes or Tieks. I have embraced the athlesuire style. Am I missing something? Really don’t want to be wearing something inappropriate for a middle aged grandma. Happy Weekend!

    1. Oh, goodness. I didn’t mean to start such a ruckus! LOL. I think leggings with tunics are fine, although there are more flattering silhouettes, they can be cute sometimes. I was referring to the trend of wearing leggings with regular tops, and falling into the rut of wearing yoga pants as a daily uniform. There is definitely a place for cute athleisure outfits – and as you describe, making an effort to look polished with cute shoes and jewelry and covering the important areas. 😉

  10. Hi Jo-Lynne! I did not know about the yoga pants controversy. While it’s not our place to judge what others wear, I do wish all women dressed like they respect themselves instead of wanting men to stare at them & mentally undress them. Thanks for sharing your real world with us. It’s finally feeling like fall in GA. Yay! Have a great weekend!

  11. My adult children now thank me for not wearing pjs to the bus stop, yoga pants to their school, and slippers to the grocery store, lol. In my days of children at home (4 of our own and 2 years with 2 of my sister’s children) I always pulled a pair of jeans on in the morning, threw a T or a sweater on, did my hair (ponytail) and put on some sort of make-up. My children say they felt, as kids, that me looking put together mattered because it meant that I cared about them and myself. It also made me the cool mom at the bus stop, apparently. 🙂

Raining and chilly in Delaware. But I love my rain boots!

  12. I missed the yoga pant controversy too. Oh well, lol. I’m wishing I had a pair of rain boots today, maybe I just won’t leave the house 😉 We bought ticket to ride, and over a year later it’s still in the package 🙁 Finding time for games is tough with a 3 year old and my husband’s crazy schedule! Maybe now that our daughter is going to bed earlier we’ll be able to invite people over after she’s asleep sometime. Everyone has great things to say about it!

  13. I have to state my opinion. Lol The gentleman complaining about yoga pants should keep his opinion to himself. The only man influencing my dressing is my husband. I wear yoga pants a few times a week as I agree wearing them took her makes a difference in my attitude . I will also say. You can wear yoga pants and dress them
Up. On days I go to yoga if doing errands st the same time , I wear long tops over the yoga top with jewelry and the tops are look covering private parts. We just need to think it through

  14. each look cuter than the next…and these sleevless sweaters are a good purchase because I am not convinced it is EVER GETTING COLD this fall. Ha!

  15. Hi Jo-Lynne, I really enjoy your blog. However, what I have found in my 55+ years of living is that society should learn to focus on a person’s kindness and unselfish acts as opposed to dress and make up. Most everyone loves to put on a nice outfit and nice makeup, but should that really matter in order to step out the door, have lunch with a friend, etc.? It really doesn’t convey a good message to the younger (or any) generation that you should dress a certain way in order to feel good about yourself. It only encourages cat calling, bullying, etc. Self-confidence is truly achieved in one’s ability to be kind to others than the clothes/make up one wears. We didn’t come into this world with fancy clothes and make up on and we loved ourselves then as did others around us :-).

    1. Hi Sue. Yes, of course I believe ultimately character matters more than clothes and makeup. But this is a style blog, and we discuss matters of style, and clothing most certainly affects how you feel about yourself and how others view you so it’s a valid discussion. I appreciate your input. 🙂

  16. Love all of the outfits again this week, thanks for all of the inspiration. I do have quite a few similar items in my closet already, just never really thought of putting them together that way???? I totally agree with you, Holli and a few other ladies about the matter of getting dressed daily. I just feel so much better about myself, even if nobody else ‘cares’. Thank you for another great post. Now I’m off to order the infinity scarf from the first post. Seems easier than a blanket scarf … Have a great rest of the day????

  17. Do you have a pair of favorite white jeans? price ever an issue? and why are they your go to’s? Still on the hunt because I hate seeing my underwear! 🙂

    1. Hey Lisa, my favorites are DL1961 Emma in Porcelain: https://bit.ly/2eD3ncP

      And these Paige Verdugo: https://bit.ly/2eCeF5y

They are $$$ but they look fantastic on, they are as close to non-see-thru as I have found, and they will last years. Definitely wait for a sale. DL1961 has 30% off right now! 🙂

Sometimes Bloomies runs Denim Days when all jeans are like 30% off, and Shopbop runs good sales every so often. Nordstrom will eventually have them on sale or they will price match.

If you don’t like how tight those are, those two brands seem to have the best (thickest) white denim, in my opinion, so some of their other styles might work for you.

      Hope that helps!
