jane iredale PurePressed Base Review & Tutorial

I get a lot of requests for more makeup posts and tutorials so I was excited when the folks from jane iredale reached out about doing a photo tutorial for their PurePressed® Base Mineral Foundation to show the jane iredale difference.

I’ve actually been using this product for years, and I’ve mentioned it a lot on the blog in various posts, but I’ve never really shown you HOW to use it so that’s what I’m going to do today.

The thing I like most about this product is how fast and easy it is to apply, but it also has great coverage and staying power. I’m always surprised by how well it lasts.

For those with sensitive skin and a desire to use only clean beauty products, you’ll be happy to know that jane iredale products use natural preservatives (no parabens or talc) and clean ingredients to minimize allergy risk and nurture healthy skin.

As an added bonus, the Hydration Sprays are all ECOCERT Natural and Organic certified with aromatherapy and skincare benefits. Not only do they make my skin feel fresh and dewy, they also smell wonderful.

After a phone consultation with a jane iredale personal shopper, they sent me a box with several shades of their PurePressed® Base along with The Handi Brush, Flocked Sponge, and three of their Hydration Sprays (D2O™, POMMISST™ and Balance.)

I really love The Handi Brush. I can apply this mineral foundation a lot faster and get better coverage with this brush than I could with the one I was using.

Here’s how it works. I always wash my face and moisturize before beginning to apply makeup. This is how I look with a fresh face (and a hint of mascara and eyebrow pencil… keeping it real!) You can see that I have some redness as well as freckles and sun damage to cover.

STEP 1: Swirl the The Handi Brush in the PurePressed® Base and tap lightly to remove excess.

STEP 2: Apply to your face with downward strokes. You can also apply it down into your neck. I always do this so there’s no line where my foundation ends.

STEP 3: Spritz your face two or three times with the Hydration Spray. This helps to set your makeup and create a long-lasting, flawless finish.

Each Hydration Spray has its own unique aromatherapy and skincare benefits. Balance Hydration Spray contains Orange Essential Oil, Orange Peel Extract, Grapefruit Peel Extract and Algae Extract to calm and feed the skin, as well as Green Tea Extract which is beneficial for acne-prone skin. D2O™ is based on Ylang Ylang and helps to hydrate and plump skin cells and to calm and protect the skin.

POMMISST™ hydrates and conditions all skin types and helps to conceal pores and fine lines. It also has the added benefit of Pomegranate Extract, which is a powerful antioxidant and UV protector. I think this one is my new favorite. (I had tried the other two before but never this one.) It has a pleasing aroma, and I’ll take all the help I can get concealing pores and fine lines.

Here’s the final result!

I love how fresh and natural my skin looks with jane iredale PurePressed® Base. It takes less than a minute to apply, and it creates the perfect canvas for applying the rest of my makeup.

  1. Thank you for this tutorial. I used PurePressed Base for many years. I discovered that it made my oily skin even shinier (if that’s possible!) and seemed to settle into creases. I have been using drug store powdered foundation for a few years. Not overjoyed with the coverage. I would switch back to JI in a flash if I could find a way to apply it without the unwanted ‘glow’ I seem to get. I have never used the hydration spray. Could that be my problem? Any suggestions?

    1. Hi Melissa, so sorry for the delay, but I wanted to get an official answer from the company. Here’s what they said: The application of PurePressed Base Mineral Foundation is so important for perfect coverage! Working with minerals too much tends to separate the individual minerals and pull the one that creates glow to the surface. Follow these application tips to ensure you’re shine-free! https://janeiredale.com/us/en/makeup-tips/mineral-makeup-application.htm

      I hope that helps!

      1. Wow! So impressed with your follow through! I visited the Jane Iredale site after you posted your tutorial. I missed this page of tips for application. You have inspired me to try PurePressed again. Once again, thank you for all you offer in your blog! This type of attention to your readers is why I check in with you on a daily basis.

        1. I know this is an old comment, but I would really like to know how it worked out for you? Did the hydration spray or suggestions they gave help at all? I love this foundation, but my skin looks incredibly oily about 2 hours after application & gets worse throughout the day.

  2. Thanks for keeping it real! I have redness and sun damage too. This gives me an accurate view as to what type of results I could expect. ???? I have no interest seeing someone with flawlesss skin review this type of product. You look beautiful. I will definitely consider purchasing this product.

  3. I’ve never used a powder foundation before. Love that this powder has SPF. The before and after pics are amazing! Are you wearing concealer or is it just powder and spray? Do you touch up during the day? I use a tinted moisturizer and find it difficult to touch up (for spf reasons, not for coverage) without ruining rest of makeup. Maybe powder is easier?

    1. In this picture, just powder and spray. I do normally wear a little concealer as well, but I don’t apply it all under my eyes as I do when I use a liquid foundation. I just apply with a brush to the side of my nose by my eye that has that blue vein – does everyone have that? This powder covers up the rest of the under-eye area pretty well. I do apply it there, and usually across my eyelids too. This is really easy to touch up throughout the day too. I usually touch it up if I’m going to go somewhere at night — mainly the nose and chin, but I can reapply all over and just swipe on some blush afterwards and it looks as good as new.

  4. I started using the pressed powder about 2 years ago on the suggestion of my hair stylist. I LOVE it! Super easy and LASTS all day. I use their blush and eye shadow, too. Good stuff. I’m a redhead with sensitive skin and I have Hashimoto’s Thyroiditis, so I need to be super careful about everything I use. I’ve had NO problems with this stuff.

  5.  Wow, I placed an order this morning and it has already shipped. I can’t wait to give this product a try.   I am a little nervous about the color match but it is what it is.

  6. I know this was super old (it was made in 2017 and I’m sending this in 2021) I’m trying to find out what shade is being worn in this article? I’ve looked all over but I don’t see it. Thanks so much!

    1. I don’t remember for sure, but these days I typically use Latte in the summer, and since that was September, I’m assuming that’s what it was. I use Warm Sienna or Bisque in the winter.
