How to Wear a Jumpsuit

I’m teaming up with Kristin from Take Time for Style for a fun style collab! We’re going to talk about how to wear a jumpsuit.

How to Wear a Jumpsuit: An all black jumpsuit is stunning with leopard sandals and an orange clutch! Fashion for Women Over 40

I’ve been wanting to find a jumpsuit for a while. I ordered and returned a few, and then this one arrived from Nordstrom. I was so excited when I tried it on. It’s exactly what I was hoping for.

Finding a jumpsuit that is flattering isn’t the easiest task. I wanted something that wasn’t too tight or too baggy, and I didn’t want an elastic waistband like so many jumpsuits have because that causes the top to blouse out and adds visual weight.

It can be easy to lose your figure in a jumpsuit I wanted to find one that accentuates my waist. (Another option is to add a belt to create interest and define the waistline.) This one has that ruching that I’m so fond of, and to be on the safe side, I’m wearing my Spanx.

Since a jumpsuit is a bit of a fashion risk, I didn’t want anything revealing that would make me feel uncomfortable. This one shows just the right amount of skin, and while the top is form fitting, the pants are looser, so it all works together to create the right balance.

A jumpsuit is a fun piece because, like a dress, it’s one and done. All you have to do is add a great shoe and some fun accessories, and you’re off to the races!

To accessorize this solid black jumpsuit, I went with my old standby — leopard shoes and an orangey-red clutch. I love that combination with black.

How to Wear a Jumpsuit: Pair a black jumpsuit with high heeled leopard sandals, and add a bright clutch.

I knew I wanted to wear a high heeled sandal with this outfit. I had my eye on the Steve Madden Carrson Sandals in leopard, but they were sold out in my size. As it turns out, I’m so glad they were because I like these Sole Society Dace Leopard Sandals even better, AND I can actually walk comfortably in them. Score!

These have a 3-inch heel, which I find to be quite manageable.

Of course, while I was waiting for the shoes to come in, the jumpsuit started selling out. Womp. Womp. There are still a few sizes left, and it’s on the pricey side anyway, so I’ve linked to some other options in the widget at the end of this post.

I decided to forego a necklace and go with a statement earring instead. Usually with a deep V like this, I would wear something in the neckline, but I didn’t have anything quite right for it, and I really like the bright white and gold statement earrings next to my face.

The intertwined bangle bracelet I’m wearing is from Kohl’s, and it adds a nice little bling to the wrist.

I really like how this clutch has a removable gold chain. I always look for that in a clutch because I like to keep my hands free for wine and food! Ha! This bag actually came from LeTote but I will link to some great options that are currently available.

This certainly isn’t something I’d wear on a weekly basis, but if I had an event coming up and wanted something a little bit different than my usual sheath dress or dressed-up denim outfit, this jumpsuit would be perfect.

  1. Thanks for suggesting a belt! My neighbor gave me a jumpsuit and while quite comfortable and cute it does blouse out a lol more than I like. I think a wide belt will do the trick!

  2. Wow, this looks very classy and elegant! I’ve always dismissed this trend and have never considered a jumpsuit for any occasion. You’ve certainly given me something to think about!

  3. I love it – it looks great on you 🙂 my only question is how on earth do you go to the ladies room ? I’ve tried on several rompers/jumpsuits and go back to that same question, lol.

  4. I wore jumpsuits in the 80’s when they were in, and I was 18 or do, but not since. I like the one you’re wearing but I’m afraid until they come with a back hatch I’m opting out. I also have a bladder of steel (I’m a nurse) but I just could not handle dropping everything in a public restroom.

  5. It’s funny Jo-Lynne because everyone always says the bathroom thing about jumpsuits. However the one I have takes no more time to pull down (and maybe even less time) than my work trousers that I have to unbuckle the belt, undo the hooks & button & unzip! Besides—I think we are very adaptable and you get used to what you have, right?
This looks more than fabulous on you!!

  6. This jumpsuit fits you perfectly. If we all looked as good as you, we’d all be buying them. I do like the idea of something new to try for a special occasion! Keep bringing us these great options. Have a blessed day!

  7. This is so striking on you!! I loved jumpsuits when they were the rage in the 80’s, but at 59…closer to 60, I won’t revisit the trend. As you said this one is a great option instead of a dress! Have a great day!

  8. Jo-Lynne, Once again, you look fantastic in the jumpsuit! Because I don’t have a strong bladder, a jumpsuit is not something I should wear. I do remember wearing them back in high school and lived them.

Have a blessed day! Packing again today.

  9. One great thing about jumpsuits is that they make a person look taller – which I’m always interested in doing. I’m glad they’re back in style. The one you chose is really cute, and could be worn for many occassions.

  10. Love this! I have tried on 5 jumpsuits this season trying to fine “the one.” 1 from WHBM (too dressy), 3 from Nordstroms (too casual/cheap) and 1 from a boutique (too short at the waist). This one was just out of my price range, but maybe I should have tried it. I have the BEST long sleeveless jumpsuit that cinches at the ankles so I have high expectations. My next try is this 2 piece jumpsuit from VacayStyle- I am going to a trunk show on Monday. I think it will be very versatile: https://vacaystyle.com/collections/2-piece-jumpsuits/products/tahiti-2-piece-jumpsuit?variant=24340148359 I have this lace dress and love it! https://vacaystyle.com/collections/lace-dresses/products/martinique-lace-dress?variant=20542931911

  11. Love it. You look really elegant and fashionable and it has a certain special wow about it. I wore a jumpsuit in the mid 90s (I was a teenager!) but it had a straight/wide leg. It was black and for special occasions, and I thought then that it was unusual which made me like it even more. I am 5,9 and it worked well without heels. My mum didn’t let me wear heels, ha ha. I didn’t think id try this trend again but you may have changed my mind!

  12. It is a bit pricey, but it looks really good on you! ???? It’s not a piece I would wear much so I won’t make the investment, but I can see see the versatility there for someone with the need. I remember in the 80’s I had a couple of denim jumpsuits. I thought I was all that and more. Ha! And those things weighed a ton! ???????? It’s interesting to see how my fashion sense and style has changed and hopefully improved, over the years. ????
