Kill Me Slowly

Well, for Day 1, I don’t suppose we did too badly.  She tinkled in the potty three times,
on my couch once, and on the kitchen floor once.  Oh yeah, and she left a package on my bathroom
floor.  Beyond that, she was in pullups (naptime) or swim diapers (at my 5-year-old’s end of school pool party).  Which is a post in and of itself.  Suffice it to say, my 2-year-old definitely takes after my husband’s side of the family when it comes to the water.  No fear sums it up nicely.

On the potty training front, I am figuring out her patterns and her signals, so the learning curve is slowly diminishing.  I realize that I’m probably making my life unnecessarily miserable by forcing the issue.  The wait-until-they-take-the-initiative strategy worked beautifully with my middle child, and there’s no pressing reason why I’m not taking the same approach this time.  I’m just ready to get it over-with, it’s a good time of year to work on it, and what I save in diapers I can spend at the mall.  Or more likely on the rising gas prices.

At any rate, I’m going to give it a week, and if we aren’t making progress, then I will reassess.  Meanwhile, I feel like I live in a sewer.  Thank goodness we invested in a steam cleaner when we bought this house.  It has already been put to good use this week.

I have invested in the thick training pants (which, by the way, she was wearing when she saturated my couch, if that gives you any indication as to how much liquid she consumed while she sat in front of the TV yesterday morning), M&Ms, juice, urine neutralizing spray, and a bountiful stash of wine and Mikes Hard Lime.  Okay, I’m kidding.  My friend Kim loaned me the spray.  (You didn’t think I was kidding about the bountiful stash, did you?  Surely you know me better than that.)

Any-who.  I’m all geared up for another day of sitting by the potty chair, watching Barney, and waiting for a pint-sized geyser to erupt.  Wish me well.

  1. No, she’s not trying to control. She’s trying to figure out how it works. She’s afraid to release it or unsure exactly how. My son was the same way, and once he figured out, we were home free. I’m *hoping* I get that lucky this time! 🙂

  2. Good luck! Maybe she knows(senses your urgency) that you really want her to go in the potty and she likes having that control over you.

Perhaps if you just said, “Ok, you are wearing your big girl underwear so make sure you go pee-pee in the potty when you need to” and then left it at that (no hovering, no potty in front of the tv, no extra juice, etc.)then she would just do it.

Probably too simplistic, but just a thought…

  3. Have you tried cloth diapers? I found this to work very well for my kids instead of pull ups because all but the youngest wore disposal and wasn’t used to the cloth feel. It kept my furniture and carpet safe…and they didn’t like the feel of wetness on their bottom.

Also… if you can withstand it… let her go naked. She’ll stop wanting to use the carpet and see that it has no where to go to the floor and want to use the toilet.

Hope this helps… but you know she’ll be potty trained and all this ‘work’ will be a distant memory.

Have fun! (PS: I don’t envy you right now. No offense. 🙂

  4. I was where you are last year and it stunk!! I did give up at the beginning of summer and tried again at the end when Zoe finally got it. One thing I found that helped my sanity was those plastic underwear cover things because they they caught some of the pee, but Zoe could still feel that she was wet. Good luck and I’m all about rewarding yourself with the Mike’s!

  5. Well at least you have some progress in the potty training arena. I took off my 2 1/2 year old’s diaper yesterday in the afternoon and she cried for almost an hour holding herself you know where demanding a diaper be put on. I gave up and put the darn thing on her and the screaming stopped. I will wait another week. I don’t think she is ready, any suggestions? Good luck to you too.

  6. Maybe the potty should just be in the bathroom. If it is in front of the tv, she is not concentratiing on what she is supposed to be doing. Give her some space and ask her every 10 – 15 minutes if she needs to go. Every time you go, take her and make her sit, too. When the other kids go, let her go and sit then, too. Make it fun, not stressful. I am no expert, this is just what worked for all 3 of mine!

  7. What we did – and this is going to sound odd. We had a “potty wall”, everytime she went potty in her potty, she got a sticker (trust me my youngest is just like yours – I was ripping my hair out). So this potty wall it worked, and after say so many stickers we took her to the store for a treat. But I was always on her, each hour on the hour – it was to the potty for a 10 min sit break, where we had a basket full of books and stuff. It’s hard, and I understand totally. Take your time, and don’t give up, she’ll get it. I know it.

  8. Well, my youngest went pee on the potty 3 times yesterday. But I still have him in the diaper. I need to get brave and just let him run around the house with nothing on. It’s nice to know other Mom’s are going through this with me.

  9. My 2-1/2-year-old has gone three days with panties, and only a few accidents! I’m so thrilled, I will never have to buy diapers again!!!!!!!!!

You can do it! I find the pool is the perfect place to potty train, because you can never tell with all those puddles around. 😉

  10. OH golly, good luck. That’s all I can say since my first potty training experience was not good and I am SO not looking forward to the second…

  11. when i first read the paragraph about the things you invested in (thick training pants, juice, urine neutralizing spray, m&m’s , wine and mike’s hard lemonade, i thought they were all things for the toddler.

NO WONDER SHE IS PEEING ALL OVER THE PLACE IF YOU ARE PLYING HER WITH WINE AND MIKE’S HARD LEMONADE!

then i re-read it and it made more sense!

    good luck!
